I watched the band of the Grenadier Guards play this at the concert that they do with us (the Bromley Youth Concert Band) each year at St George's Church, Beckenham...Me and my friends were in awe during the solos, as we are both trombonists, and loved the trombone solo, but were stunned at the percussion solo...how can you play so accurateley at such a speed?
The Salvation Army bands raise money through concerts and other fund raisers for the uniforms and the instruments are either personally owned or paid for through the monies raised.
I know this for a fact since I am a band member in another Salvation Army band in Massachusetts
Those are paid by donations and money raised with concerts. Also the members in some Salvation Army Staff Bands have to pay a kind of contribution...
The reason why they play in a none-paid/none-profesional band is because they play with a special meaning, a special drive...which can not be found in any other band!
That's more important than whatever money....although I don't see that none of them did musical studies or are making money with music (teacher, producer, director)
Whoa!! Trombone Solo!!! Including in Czardas etc!! Ridiculous!! Absolutely awesome!! After that, NYSB have gone up in my ratings! Along with Aaron, the euphonium player! Awesome stuff!!
The Salvation Army bands raise money through concerts and other fund raisers for the uniforms and the instruments are either personally owned or paid for through the monies raised.
Every member is a volunteer, working daily and then practicing once or twice a week so they can perform together. None is paid for their services...I know...I am a band member in Massachusetts....
ahh, this brings back good memories, for my work experience I had to do the opening solo on the clarinet. in front of 50 army musicians, sightreading. i have every respect for these brilliant musicians. wow.
solos awsome a little add lib in them all but it made them better :) what happened to the perc solo the 4th time? lol and the hoy could have been a little more enthusiastic, but i suppose when you get something as well rehersaed as this your not enthusiastic anymore. o well very lovely playing on all acounts well done :D
absolutely awesome solos but i just wonder why the hell peter graham didn't write his own rather than copying them from czardes and flight of the bumblebee
I've attempted to play the trom one and it's written out and my the cornet and euph solos were the same in my band as they were in this one, apart form the cornet one at the beggining i think that might be ad lib
Burt before the concert "Yawnnnn, I think I'll play a little flight of the bumblebee and . . . some czardas, and a little klezmer for taste" Aaron before the concert "I'll be thinking about what to have for dinner while playing perfectly"
i've always had quite a problem with trumpet players, being one myself :P, always trying to be "the best"... just being a "musician", being a technical genius... i get sick and tired of it sometimes, it's what music has become sadly... but i dont see that here... listen to gordon ward, mason, and vanderweele... i dont just hear notes being pumped from a programmed machine, i hear emotion... such grace and skill in this performance... beautiful
This band certainly is a contrast to the little Salvation Army Band one might see performing on a street corner. These are top knotch pro soloists! How impressive! How about that cornet player! He has a tongue like a snake! You would be hard pressed to find a better concert Band of this level anywhere!
Great performance. But by all respect for Peter Graham, this is not a composition, but arrangement of many pieces, a potpurry. I did not hear a single accord which was not taken from some known russian/cossack song. There are even some passages "borrowed" from the bolshevik song.
wow spectacular performance I am fan number one of gordon ward is very good solist sorry for my english is very bad but: es lo ke hay so thank for this video

... why does the cornet sound so much like a trumpet? shouldn't the tone be less bright?
On the other hand the entire thing was so well played, the I really should complain. Just wondering though.
Drag0ncl0ud 3 years ago
I believe it's that Gordon is a phenomenal player and can alter his tone to suit the style of the piece.
Awesome playing from all through, especially to Aaron, the daddy of the euphonium!!
