What a waste this show was. After Kolchak destroyed Janos Skorzeny and Katherine Rawlins, then this series could have taken the logical step that the 1979 Salems Lot film took;where the hero's were on the run from vengeful vampires that were out to even the score.Kolchak could have become a real paranoid basket of nerves as he moved from town to town and job to job protecting himself while occasionally taking the fight to the un-dead themselves as the opportunity presented itself.Opportunity lost.
Another touch is the lighting. When Catherine Rawlins is picked up by her ex boyfriend, as she's leaning into the car, the light shows her normal face. When a shadow falls across it for a second, her face looks demonic. A lot of subtle touches here.
Just the opening scene with McGavin and Storch shows how brilliant the show was. The character, the writing and Darren McGavin were all outstanding. I do not like horror shows. I did not then or now, but I didn't care, Carl Kolchak was cool.
Ah childhood memories and theres a life lesson in there to' if her ex boyfriend hadnt of cheated or had the intention of doing so he and his wife would of been fine ,instead of being a chomp one get one free vampire happyy meal
I loved this series growing up,and this episode scared the crap out of me.The scene where the vampire attacks her ex boyfriend and then kills his girlfirend when she comes through the door gave me nightmares, but that was pretty cool in itself...just goes to show that sometimes less (no CGI or complicated affects) is more.
@naysgrace CGI is the lazy person's way out to cater to geeks in the audience that don't like books since you can't plug them in. Old school-atmosphere, wardrobe, makeup, photography, you know, talent.
@Ravisante5000 that was the creepiest scene ever; saw it once; never could watch it again-shows vampire needs his/her heart to live but that heart is totally black. Creepiest female vampire ever? Lara Parker on Dark Shadows-scary scary lady.
@RPenta Lara Parker "Angeligue" rules as one of tv's all time badass vampire babes, but this episode of "Nightstalker" has a pretty good runner up.And the funny thing is,she's a byproduct of the "Nightstalker" movie...remember that?
Yes, one of the best, if not the best, vampire movies ever. Janos Skorzeny was truly frightening. So is his female victim, Katherine Rawlins, in this episode!
I watched the show as an adult, and its definitely from a different perspective than a kid. I grew up on Tales from the Darkside and Friday the 13th the series and I think back of being so freaked out but still i was hooked!
OMG. When that vampire hissed , the hair flew up on my arms and legs ! That scared the living daylights out of me. Especially when you saw her eyes and fangs ! OMG. I swear I'm going to have some wild nightmares:::::::::locking all the doors , securing windows, checking under bed, in closet,in shower,on patio, shutting curtains and blinds, got flashlight by my bed, cell phone, wearing cross around my neck. Get me through this night , please !
@naysgrace Im 47 and knew then that it was of special qauliity.did I spell that properly?watching it now friday night, which is when it originally aired.
David Chase's teleplay always has an Emmy Award on this Kolchak Classic. Kudos always to Carl & Tony's spark of comedy here with ol' Larry Storch as " Swede " ( Still alive and well at age 86 ) Ciao, Carl ~ LOL

I love these old T V shows, like this and Banacek. They may not have been all that great, at times, but they take me back.......

@hoibshIts Its subtly that's lacking in new horror. It shows you how creative the entire show was.

If this series was made today Kolchak would be typing on a computer instead of a typewriter.

All of the shows, the episodes never employed CGI,just plain old stuntwork, make up and acting.
Contemporary shows lacked that!

It was good to see they connected the original movie to this episode since Carl faced the vampires creator in the Night Stalker

This show was totally scary (well, at least the scary parts were) when I was a kid. Now as a hardened adult, who's seen it all, it seems pretty tame.
Nevertheless, I can now follow the stories better. And the humour does not go over my head like it did back in the day.
Conclusion: a show with something for everyone. :)
