  • The last part was so disappointing!

Of course it's easy to avoid meat in Japan, the huge problem is to avoid fish and dashi and I was really looking forward for some tips about it..

Anyway, as someone said before me, if you eat fish (or any other dead animal) you are not a vegetarian..

  • are you dumb or what ??? if you eat fish you're not a vegetarian, got it ?

  • This is so exciting! I'm glad I just started watching! :)

  • oops. fish are animals. eating fish is not vegetarian.

  • People who doesn't eat meat are weak - Jesus Christ

What will make you healthier is eating organic, exercise and a well balance diet. :)

  • @Zoinaire I heard Jesus was vegetarian.

  • Thank you for posting the last bit about eating fish! I grew up on the west coast where at least half of vegetarians eat fish (and I do too), and since moving to Chicago where seafood is not as popular, I have come across a lot of hostility and critism from vegetarians who do not allow that in their "definition". I've come across so much that I've stop using the term even though it's a convienient one. Also, I'm half japanese, grew up on japanese food, and will never stop eating seafood.

  • Hey Dusty, I'm also a vegetarian, and am planning to apply to the JET program next year after I graduate. Your vids rule, keep it up!

  • I'm looking forward to your vlogs. I'm a vegetarian and lived in Japan, but just for a summer.

  • What did you do during that summer? Where did you live?

  • I studied abroad. I went to Temple University's campus in Japan and I lived in Tokyo.

  • Do you have any plans on returning to Japan?

  • I've actually applied to the JET Program for 2010.

  • The last bit there made me laugh, profusely I might add. I became a vegetarian about 6 months ago and the one stipulation that I forged in my head was that no matter what I would not give up eating fish...it's just to damn good.

  • :) Yeah, fish is too damn good! I just now finished an amazing sushi dinner!

    Thanks for watching!

  • Nice enough video, but are serious? You call yourself a vegetarian and eat fish? Seriously? You are simply not a vegetarian. I suppose if you want to label yourself you could call yourself

an ovo-lacto pescatarian. Of course you could call yourself anything you want but at least my term would be accurate. Anyway, my intention is not be an ass because you seem like a very nice guy but the term vegetarian indicates you do not eat any living creatures and clearly fish are living creatures.

  • You are absolutely right, I am not a true vegetarian and that is why made sure and made the comment at 2:53 to clarify this. As a true vegetarian I would not eat fish. So I guess that makes me an ovo-lacto pescatarian as you say. I will also add that more times than not, I choose vegan meals over vegetarian or pescatarian.

I apologize if I offended you in anyway and I hope that you can still enjoy the videos, at least the ones where I use no fish.

  • Absolutely no offense taken at all.

    Thanks for your reply.

    :-)

  • And thanks for keeping me honest!

  • Do you know that funazushi is famous there? It's one of the kansai style sushis, narezushi.

  • Yes I did and one day I will work up the courage to try it! Most Japanese people around here have tried it, but normally do not eat it. I guess the smell is the worst part...

  • Vegetarians suck tofu!!

(I was hoping to be your first hater) :P

Seriously, we should compare notes after your first year and see which is more difficult - being a vegetarian in Japan or not eating fish or any seafood and living in Japan.

  • Haha! I remember thinking about that when you first mentioned you don't eat fish.... How did you manage!! I think your situation would be way more difficult, but you ate food cooked in dashi, right?

  • I'm sure I did eat food from dashi, but I guess I tried not to. I was usually wary of soups and things in broth... I'm an incredibly picky eater - a deep, dark Myargonauts secret that will never be shown on video. :D

  • LOL, ahhh come on! :)

  • hey bro really happy to see you doing well in japan =D

just curious how much do you eat per day man?

  • lol, more than you would think for someone of my size. and compared to japanese, i eat a TON! but, i'm starting to eat less since i can't just eat when i want to and have to wait for breaks in my day.

a year or so ago, i was up to well over 3000 calories a day, but i was running every single day and living in 130 degree heat (vegas) so burning that much was no problem.

  • If you watch "thedailyenglishshow's Sunday kitchen" on YouTube, Sarah shows lots of Vegetarian recipes with food items you can get in Japan. And you have to think about what to do with your Kyushoku (school lunch) as many of them contain small potion of meat to add some flavor like meat sauce for pasta. On the other hand, it would be easier for you than other vegetarians in Japan because you eat seafood as many dishes are flavored with fish broth.

  • I just subscribed to "thedailyenglishshow" but haven't yet had time to watch a lot of vids, good stuff so far!

I teach at high schools so we don't have school lunches. I live close enough to ride home and for my visit schools, I'll bring obento.

I have heard interesting stories about kyuushoku though! Whale meat!

    Thanks for the tips! :)

  • Japan is an island? Wow... I shoulda paid more attention in geography class.

    :D

I was over at a professors house last night learning how to make some new Indian dishes, a few of them vegetarian. While I was making the food, I was thinking about where I was going to find all the different kinds of Dal. I never looked before. There are lots of Indians in Kobe, so I'm sure they sell them somewhere, along with all the spices.

I'm not sure I could be vegetarian, but it'll fun to watch.

  • LOL! Smart ass! ;)

Indian food is great, gotta love curry! Dal, hmmm, I'll check at the foreign foods store near me next time I'm there.

  • That's me! Always ready with a smart ass remark!

That would be great if you find some. There are a lot of things that I didn't really think about before because I had a host mom. I wish I had cooked more for myself back then, but her food was so good, it just made more sense to let her handle it.

  • Technically, Japan is an archipelago. F.Y.I.

    ;)

  • Oh yea! Talk dirty to me, baby!

  • What the...PJ?! Is that you in there?!

  • And you take it easy! ;)

  • Okay, okay, so I was sleeping through high school...jeeze! lol

  • When I first saw this, I didn't realize it was you Jonathan. Sorry!

  • Well, in the traditional Japanese home, men aren't usually allowed into the kitchen. I remember my host families from a few years ago and I really wanted to watch her cook, but every meal time I was hurried past the kitchen and into the dining room.... It's almost as if it was sacred and not to be seen by anyone other than her and grandma.

  • There is a Japanese saying... "Men are like cockroaches... neither one belongs in the kitchen!" Anyway, Hi Dusty, my name is Tom, and I just subscribed to your channels. I was a JET in Wakayama-ken from 1996-98. Let me know if I can offer any advice or help about Japan or JET.

You said to offer you a suggestion, so: Try to travel to Koya-san and stay at a Buddhist temple overnight, where you can try their vegetarian shojin-ryori. You've never had vegetarian like it! And Koyasan is amazing

  • Hey Tom, thanks for the suggestion, that sounds AWESOME!!

    And thanks for subscribing too!

  • i love fish! cant wait for the cooking to start!

  • soon... very soon! :)

  • meant that from this channel ;)

  • 1 month ago i watched a vid about the "vegan" way of life. for me (as a cook trainee) its very interesting.

good too hear that you still eat fish (so i realy wonder what you will cook)

looking forward too your first cooking vid :)

    are u fishing?

  • Vegan is hardcore, but maybe one day I will make the move. I would really like to have a bit of land to grow my own food on. My house would even be self-sufficient.. yeah, I know, total hippie! :)

I have been cooking a lot of fish, but now I must wait for my first paycheck before I get too crazy with the fish. ;)

About the fishing, that would be awesome, but I would have to rent/buy the equipment. I see a lot of people at the lake everyday with a line in the water so perhaps I'll try too.

  • Meant to comment from this channel... I'll get the hang of the dual channel thing soon...lol.

  • um.. im not saying u shouldnt be a vegetarian, but it rly isnt more healthy. the body needs some meat=\ especially in japan where the meat is.. yknow.. better=P

    -

oh, u DO eat fish? well then that should cover it then

  • yes, yes, don't worry, i get all my essential nutrients :)

actually, the meat may be closer to "organic" here, but it is VERY high in fat. they love marbled fatty meat. it's slowly changing, more and more people are choosing lean beef and soon, "people" like me will be more widely accepted ;)
