"Zachfasion" is so right, there is so much buddy rich influence in this solo--especially in part 1!! I remember watching buddy rich for the first time. It was that so that he played on the Jerry Lewis show. I saw it here on YouTube. I never seen anyone play like that! Then I Discovered Dave and vinnie!
Buy in this solo, I see Dave mastered all of Buddy's techniques! There is also a little Steve Gad tag in there too in part 1. Dave is a master drummer!
Almost unbelievable that at 1.37 Dave made an adjustment to the splash cymbal that was imperceptible, whilst playing at a simply incredible level of technical and musical prowess.
I cannot think of any drummer curently who can live with this man.
He is quite possiblly the best drummer of all time !!!!!!!!!
@stirfinan1 I have to agree. I've listened to this solo (part 1 + 2) many times now, and it surpasses all the others IMHO -- even those by DW himself (eg. DW Drumtek 2006, DW Got A Match? part 2, etc.). It shows such an unfathomly deep, musical understanding! He really makes the drums SING in this solo.
I keep coming back to this solo!! This might be my favorite solo ever!! Its like everything you ever wanted as a drummer,is here!! And the crazy thing is,the more I hear it the better I like it,because it is like listening to a great tune, that you never get tired of!! This really is Music and Storytelling at its highest level!! Just like a great Miles tune,or Monk tune!! Incredible improvisational skills, and the ideas flow one after the other,in such an effortless way! Master of his craft.
My body collapses and my soul rises as Dave Weckl hits just the right drum just the right way, just the right combos at just the right time. Gosh hes good, best ever!
I used to have mixed feelings about Weckl, but he made a gigantic leap in musicality about ten years ago, when he began studying with Freddie Gruber. Since then, he has only gotten better.
it's just that..well..he is pretty much doing the same thing over and over. So much control. I need to feel a little bit of "letting go". It's lke a way of a boxer. You don't let your hands go...go gotta lose. This solo. Too refined. I want some animal in it...it's too human.
@TheDice2008 REALLY?? I never heard him repeat the same phrase!! Believe me he can LET IT GO as you say!! Did you listen to the whole solo?? This is the result of a lifetimes worth of work, guess you cant expect people to understand in 12 minutes!! If you think he is doing the same thing over and over, you arent at the point where you can understand whats going on here!! INCREDIBLE SOLO!!
It must suck watching something this awesome and having no idea what's going on... Sorry buddy. I wish everyone could enjoy this as much as some of us do.
