  • You know, the fact that they managed to recreate Victorian London in 1980s Russia is pretty impressive in and of itself.

  • The doctor looks like Stephen Hawking :D

  • The Legend of the Baskervilles!

Dr. Mortimer unfolded the manuscript and began reading.

"One hundred years ago the Hall of Baskerville belonged to a wild and cruel man named Hugo. This Hugo fell in love with the daughter of a farmer who lived near Baskerville Hall. The girl always avoided the wicked man, for she feared and hated him..."

  • It's one of the best movies I've ever seen! And Livanov is so funny :P

  • Super !

  • @toothus Of course he isn't)))

  • @toothus Better than Livanov? Jeremy Brett is an aggressive Holmes and he mocks Watson all the time. For your information, Holmes wasn't like that at all. As for Watson, Brett's Watson is an old man. How could a young soldier who had recently returned from the army become so old? Solomin is the best Watson, because he looks like Watson! When Watson met Holmes they were both in their mid 20-s. Read Conan Doyle. Jeremy Brett and his Watson are good for those who don't care about Conan Doyle. Sorry

  • Sorry, mate, but even Jude Law is better that the old man who played Watson in that film with Jeremy Brett.

  • Russian Holms and Vatson are great:)

  • Vitaly Solomin is the best Watson of all time. It's so sad that he's no longer with us. RIP, Vitaly. Your Watson will soon be known and loved in many countries!

  • where are the English subtitles. It would help.

  • Holmes: It's interesting to know, Watson, what you can say about this walking stick?

Watson: One could think you've got eyes on your nape.

Holmes: My dear friend, had you read my monograph about the tactile organs of the detectives, you'd have known that on the top of our ears there are these sensory points. So, I've got no eyes on my nape.

Mrs Hudson: He sees your reflection in the coffee pot.

    *Sherlock laughs hysterically*=)))))

  • Best depiction of Watson, and one of the best depictions of Sherlock Homes.

  • all i ask is that asshole fixes me and releases me back into the wild. i know civilization hates me.

  • @listikovaja

Then Russia would be glad if you went back and supported it.

But calling all american film making "stupidity" shows that you have seen only blockbusters.

  • I want to download the movies. Where can I find it?

    I am from Argentina.

  • @listikovaja I agree. My mom lived in the USSR and then moved to the USA after Yeltsin came to power. Man, it truly was the best country ever.

  • If only I spoke Russian. :[

Are there any versions with English subs? This looks brilliant.

  • @Tekkyh there is, in YouTube. See v=Ws3qGesR2uw

  • Hi Jul-Great meeting you! Hope to see you again

    Magnificent film!!!

Yes that there to speak,if the English queen(!) named Holmes and Watson's this screen version of the best!!!

  • This version is the best!!!English Queen said that Livanov was the best Holmes she had ever seen

  • She said exactly the same to all Holmes, because... she's a Queen. :)

  • and every Holmes became Honorary OBE (Officer of the Order of British Empire)?

  • @alex9044 But only ours became Honorary OBE.

  • There should be subtitles or something. Or else no one but russians with know how good it is. It looks good, but I can't watch it if I have no idea what they're saying.

  • Search for "the hound of the baskervilles (eng. subs)" here on youtube. Then you'll come across it.

  • Thank you! I've heard good things about the russian holmes series. I'm looking forward to it.

  • the best

  • i prefer holmes in the original Klingon....

  • The Russian series is terrific.

  • I think Soviet Movie is the best from all Sherlock Holmes related movies. Soviet Union was not so good country but movies were very cool.

  • Yes! I'm American and didn't see the Soviet Sherlock Holmes until 3 years ago... but I think that they are better than ANY version made in England or America.

  • You right!!!!!

  • +1!!!!

  • I think Livanov´s Holmes is the best, but the Watson isn´t quite as I thought...

  • @Murple333

I think it's the only I've ever seen... aside from snippets from American/English movies here and there. But it's pretty awesome :D

  • @Murple333

Love the pseudo-Baroque musical themes, too :D

  • Cinema was the one aspect of soviet life that always flourished and thrieved, from Eisenstein to Tarkovsky. ;)

  • too bad it's in shambles now :(

  • ofcourse it was a good country :)

  • i heared, that the british queen herself, made the actor, who played sherlock holmes, to "Sir ..."

this is just a great actor.

  • She did indeed :-D

  • His name is Vasiliy Livanov.

  • I love the Granada series a lot (w/ Brett), but I must admit that Soviet series are also very cool. Actually, this version of the Hound of Baskervilles is better - more thorough and faithful, less abriged. It also has some comic scenes. Like, Baskerville couldn't stand porrige and clashed with Barrymore because he served it a lot :)

Even though I'm biased to Brett, I do love Livanov - he is a funny and amiable version of Holmes. Maybe he's even too cute for Holmes.:) He also didn't do drugs.

  • It's so dumb to fight over who's he best. Why can't you people just enjoy it?

  • Sure, why fight? Livanov is the best ;) Voted by British critics the best S.H. impersonator in 2000. Received OBE from Her Majesty the Queen. The British know who is the best. They invented the guy, after all ;)

  • TheBishopSSR,

I would like to add that NZ government released coins commemorating SH and they used Livanov's visage for SH. :)

Also, in the Holmes museum in London, Livanov's photograph is said to the biggest among those adorning the museum.

    RIP Brett.

  • I love this series, but when they showed it on PBS here, there were subtitles. Does anyone know if subtitled version exists on YouTube?

  • It does. Search for "the hound of the baskervilles (eng. subs)".

  • I love both the Granada series as well this Russian one, my only complaint is the overdone (IMO) score that's used whenever there's an interior shot of Holmes in 221b, I'm half expecting a shot of the whole Russian Philharmonic Orchestra crammed into the 221b set.

  • agree, but on the other hand the melody is nice

  • Sublime! The best Hlmes & Watson EVER! Are these commercially available on DVD in Western Europe...

  • whoever is interested in having soundtrack to this movie can post e-mail adress here somehow, and i will think how to send it/ Its amazing!

  • I'm amazed that this was produced for television in 1981 ! ; the soundtrack, the cinematography, is stunning! Kudos for putting it here on YouTube. In the USA, of course, we have PBS, and only they would be the likely sponsor of a project like this.

  • Well, maybe I'm not a big fan of Russia when it comes to politics, but I love Russian literature and cinema. I think this is a great versian of Holmes adventures. I also love THE Russian Hamlet the most! Good work.

  • Makes me wanna learn Russian just to watch it.

  • all in your hands)

  • In 2006 russian actor Vasiliy Livanov got The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his Holmes series !

  • I'v seen an interview with creators of the series and they said that they tried to make a comedy)) Truly, the movie is pierced with gentle irony and humour and it's the main secret of it's success IMHO

  • Yeah... Russian Sherlock Holmes is the best one... And Watson too of course... ;D

  • which orchestra the music is from????

  • ah the russian language, wierdly graceful

  • I don't suppose that there's a complete set of the entire series on DVD with English subtitles?

  • There is. I own it and I've just checked: it is for DVD regions 5 (exUSSR countries) and 2 (Europe)

  • Screw you, Tony. Why do you think the English themselves admitted that Livanov was the best Holmes, and he holds the biggest portrait in the Sherlock Holmes museum.

  • That's the best Sherlock Holmes.

Seriously. None of the other Sherlock Holmes in movies come close to this one.

Crap. I wish I still had all the episodes on tape.

  • Is the rest of this going to be put up or is this just one of those things designed to torture me? I can't get this series because I own an English DVD player and so can't actually get hold of them... Sad face.

  • No wait it has... the missing ones are the sign of four and something else..

  • it's been posted somewhere on the youtube in its entirety - even with english subtitles, it only takes a few minutes to locate... anyway, i have seen it quite recently

  • I understand Vasily Livanov was awarded an MBE for his portrayal of Holmes.

  • The best Sherlock in the world as Soviet Mary Poppins.

  • stupid brats. & d.w. is THE BEST.

  • Where the fuck did you dig that up from.

  • God. You are so stereotypical.

And what have Sherlock to do with MI5/MI6?

BTW MI5/MI6 is still hostile to Russia. )))

  • Hostility to Eastern Europe was rife during the period of 1880's to 1890's. Someone idenitified as only Kosminsky, a Polish barber, was listed as one of CID's Jack the Ripper suspects.

There was also a heavy influx of Romanians into Victorian era Britain, and some scholars speculate that influenced Bram Stoker's Dracula. The problems are although Vladislaus Dracula was Romanian, the character of the Count was Szekely (Hungarian/German), and such a notation doesn't exist in Stoker's notes.

  • You dont know anything about russians :) I love movies about WW2 despite the fact that Russia appears as an enemy of Germany :)) Also i like stoires about Holmes :))))

  • In Soviet Russia, cases solve Holmes.

  • is this the same man from Young Sherlock Holmes/

  • If I understood Russian I bet it'd be great. Sounds professional enough anyway, mind, and I love the music!

  • The best Holmes version indeed! Could anybody provide some more info about the music main theme? Is it composed by a Russian composer especially for the series or it is a classical piece of music? Whatever the case may be, it's a great choice of great musi!

  • The composer's name is Vladimir Dashkevich. More information you can find by Google.

    Best wishes,

    Russian Video from Russia

    video.kylekeeton com

С Новьiм годом! :-)

  • you should know that first 6-7 episodes where shot very carefully and long time about 7 years. This where amazing quality comes from. It's not possible in capitalism. Don't say that totalitarian states can't make a good movie or better than free world.

  • I am not Russian, But I do believe that Vasiliy Livanov and Vitaliy Solomin are best Holmes and Watson. They have showed more "englishness" than British actors. The fact that Vasiliy Livanov got a reward for being the 'best Sherloch Holmes' tells us a lot.

  • reading all the comments on this page has been very interesting :L I like how someone detected the possible return of Donfrye. Anyway, I watched this whole video despite haing no real interest in Sherlock Holms or Russian renditions of it-But I have to say I was impressed.

  • yea russia had excellent actors including Livanov!!! nowadays there is not much talant... :(

Livanov recently got a reward from britain for being the best sherlock holmes :)

i am russian by the way. :)

  • This won't be a popular opinion but I think Brett plays Holmes as a little too unbalanced.

  • Actually you do have a point sometimes he overacts and plays Holmes as too intense but overall a very good portrayal and I like the Granada production, generally very authentic.

  • The best performance EVER!!!!!!! WELL DONE USSR cinematography!!!! Look what a vibrant discussion it caused 29 years after it has been made!

  • i'm not russian but i do believe Vasily Livanov made the best Sherlock Holmes of all times. especially, when it comes to looks. it's been marvelously directed too, they dodn't make them like movies like they used to any more...

i find it absolutely facinating how russians do better at being british then brits themselves :) maybe holywood could learn something from it before they release their new sherlock holmes movie in 2010...

  • As a matter of fact, Donfrye made a lot of sense when he said that Watson should be young.

  • I'm Russian too. This guy 22omg22 appeared on this website and said some bad things calling Livanov's fans narrow-minded!!! I agree with Frye. And I don't understand how he can be supported! Russians are with you, Donfrye! And our Holmes is the best.

  • #1: Firstly, I guess to make a fairer judgement, everybody should go check what Donfrye said about about JB/DB/EH (BEFORE I CAME HERE)on JB's vid page, AND to check his previous comments on this vid page.

As I said, few can keep their temper under control when you see ur beloved actors under fire. MAYBE YOU CAN. BUT I COULDN'T.

Secondly, I did criticised Livanov's acting. BUT plz compare the language I used to what Donfrye said about JB/EH/DB.

  • #2: except for "bland", I don't think I'v used other disrespectful words.

and if you think "narrow-minded" is NOT APPROPRIATE to describe what Donfrye(and some others) said and did (BEFORE I CAME HERE), I sincerely apologize and take back my word. Just leave it for public judgement. ok? Hope that alleviates ur anger a bit.

Thirdly, do YOU think my nagative opinions can JUSTIFY donfrye's namecalling and threats?

  • #3:If you think Donfrye's words are not bad, here they are for your enjoyment: "you mother f*cker" "I'll twist your head off" "you stink" "you chickensh*t" "go f*ck urself" "you idiot" "I will smash your face, punk if you don't shut up. " And not to speak Donfrye's poor reasoning logic. I COULD'VE used his arguments against him(like age problem, I don't think Livanov was as young as Holmes' age in the canon), BUT I DIDN'T.

  • #4: And not to speak donfrye's comical over-confidence in his English skills. I could follow his step and pick HIS errors too. But no I won't. too many to list 'em all and off-topic also.

Fourthly, Negative opinions are entitled and protected on youtube. BUT NOT insults and threats. Donfrye's ID is removed becuz of all the bad words and threats he posted. NOT becuz of his nationality or anything else.

  • #5:I'v seen there've been other IDs got removed on this page. I hope it's not for the same reason.

Fifthly, AS I SAID PREVIOUSLY, Now I say it again. If I ever showed ANY disrespects to Mr. Livanove or CIVILISED, well-bred fans, I sincerely apologize. And sincerely hope nobody else ever ruin my respect again. I don't think Livanov'd be happy to gain recognition this way. I don't think Livanov'd be proud of such fans as Donfrye1979

  • #6: AS I SAID in my FIRST comment here, I like Russian's rich history. I, and all other brett fans, have NOTHING against Russia and its people. Hope everybody got it right.

Most Brett fans also truly respect all other Holmes actors, including Livanov and Solomin. HOPE THIS IS THE END OF IT and let's make peace. Hope nobody else would ruin it again.

  • #7: Lastly , Kharlamov16, who joined youtube on Aug. 27th, 2008, I sincerely hope you're NOT Donfrye1979 himself whose ID has been revoked for his abusive and threatening comments.

Anyway, that's not the point. Whoever you are, good luck with your new ID experience.

  • It'd be wise if you'd finished sooner(or had never started namecalling and threats)

Thought by that "bone-picking" thing, you were about to point out a couple typos of mine. But "mom"?? LOL. You made urself a 100% fool.

  • Now a message to all other onlookers: Brett fans HAVE RESPECT for all other actors, including Livanov and Solomin. But insults to our beloved actors are intolerable. Donfrye1979's comments on Jeremy Brett's tribute vid page went too far. When people started namecalling and threats, few can keep their temper under control. And I sincerely apologize any disrespects and lack of manners on my part.

I'm sure both Mr. Livanov and the late Mr. Brett are not proud of abusive fans. Let's make peace.

  • sorry, typo again. Missed a "for". "I sincerely apologize FOR any disrespects..."(Actually I didn't mean to show any disrespects.)

  • I definitely second that! :-)

  • I have a message for donfrye1979... YOU NEED TO CHILL!!! For crying out loud, is this anyway to behave? *rolls eyes* How about instead of the "bone picking" we can all just have a mature and intellectual conversation about the different actors that play Holmes. Kay?

  • Interesting but for my money Jeremy Brett was the best Sherlock Holmes ever. He was a brilliant actor who also happened to be a warm and caring person off stage as well. Very much missed. Edward Hardwicke and David Burke were also excellent as Dr Watson. Granada gave us a lasting legacy by producing their version of Sherlock Holmes, the likes of which i do not think we shall see again.

  • Well, I guess everyone has the right of an individual taste in looks...
