What an awesome idea! I just got a sub2k and hate the front sights after my first day of breaking her in. I have a red dot already and was going to mount a rail, but hated the idea of having to remove the red dot each time I close the carbine. Would you be interested in making a few to sell, or maybe posting that schematic of the plans?
@eyeofth3b3hold3r I just finished this project and mounted it back further on the firearm. I mounted it between the two screws one section back further than him. I had to dremel a little bit down on the small ridge above the ejector just above the safety. So far so good, the rifle folds perfectly and the mount is nice and snug. I made mine almost exactly the same as his, but I used a 1/8" piece of aluminum instead of steel inside the handguard which the screws thread into.
I love this idea. I was going to put a quick detach mount for whatever optic I choose but I really like this idea. Oh and everyone is missing the point on here who keeps commenting on AR or AK. you can't fold an AR up and put it in your backpack and if you do have an underfolder AK or even a Draco AK I still doubt they will be as light. ALSO why get another carbine when this one takes the same mags as your sidearm?!?!?
you are completely missing the point. Not everyone can drop the ridiculous amount that an AR costs. How about applauding the ingenuity? Kel-Tec for the most part makes flawlessly firing ugly guns. So if you LADIES need a good looking gun to go with your Coach purse, drop the extra money on something a little more "fancy" for you "fancy" lads.
@404040c I kind of feel the same way to be honest, but I also don't think I would want this gun either, it seemed kind of "cheap". For a carbine I like more power anyway, I'd much rather have a 16" AR with a telescoping butt than the subbie.
It looks nice, but its a carbine not a rifle. It shoots 9mm rounds at in increased distance. With accuracy your looking at 50 yards. If you want real distance and penatrating power for cheap go with an AK-47.
@scottrambo2483 Sure it's a carbine, but a carbine IS, by definition, a short RIFLE. I don't even like it though, for short range work I'll take my Remington 870 any day.
if you wind up selling this please let me know.. depending on price i will be very interested.. my advice about selling them - just set up a sale on ebay,, you know how u see these adds that say 20 avaiable.. trying to organize people will make u go crazy, and alot of people dont live up to their words. powdercaoting them might be a good idea too. anyway. please let me know if your going to sell them - kctyphoon@aol.com
To 'prototypepersons'; If you need some financial backing, or want to set up a partnership to get these in production (and SELLING!), let me know on this thread. We can then go from there. Wonderful Idea and Invention; Got any other GREAT ideas? And BTW, putting 'Machinery's Handbook' as one of your books is a CLASSIC! As a retired Engineer, this country needs MORE people, like YOU, who can THINK UP, and MAKE THINGS!!! Let's get this moving; there are a lot of people out there, waiting!
Fantastic idea! This is easily the best idea I've seen on the Internet after hours and hours of searching and reading! I would definitely buy this as opposed to any of the other options, most of which negate the folding-aspects of the Sub 2000. A $30-50 price range doesn't sound unreasonable at all to me!
I wonder how much that hing scratches up the buffer tube? Other then that, I think its a good idea. Also, how does this effect the ballance? Looks like the hing is heavy.
lol at "iron" sights. funny what they make that iron out of now days. this i probably the best design for a side folding scope mount i have seen. the hinge looks like it is solid and will not change zero much if any
WOuld it be possible for you to e-mail me you plans? It looks to be a much better idea then the one Kel Tec sells. dietzdrummer@aol.com Thanking you in advance. Dave
Beautiful application; mod. I will employ your idea, except I prob will install a Picanny rail, instead of the optics directly and rubber liner for metal to metal contact.
Extra Cash Opportunity Some people out there would love to have this done for them. As long as you DO NOT handle the receiver(part with the serial number) You dont have to worry about the BATFE, and will be able to receive/send through US mail. Since the mod is performed on the hand guard, you will be ok/legal. ^_^
nice job...i want to do this to mine as well...what are the dimensions of the door hinge? also, you can do all of this without opening up the gun right? thanks
nice job...i want to do this to mine as well...what are the dimensions of the door hinge? also, you can do all of this without opening up the gun right? thanks
damn bro your a mechanical badass! you should try and patent that shit, the only thing i can think is to add a way to lock the hinge in the open position so you dont have to hold the scope
How well does this hold zero, I want to see groups. If it is solid with groups send me a PM, I have one hell of a channel to sell those into. I have my doubts but show me groups and I will become a believer.
OK, I really want one of these. Are you making them for sale ?? This is a perfect solution. Please let me know if I can obtain the unit or the diagram. Great job on the video !!!!
Nice job. I want a SUB-2000 with optics, but I don't like the mounts that Kel-Tec sells. they restrict you to using a 1" diameter scope with a relatively long tube. I've always thought that they should change it to a folding 1913 rail, and you have shown that it can be done.
If I were you I'd contact Kel-Tec and see if they'd be interested in purchasing your idea. My thought would be that they could construct a similar contraption using lighter weight materials in keeping with the carbine's light weight theme.
Maybe you'll get a free RFB out of the deal!
As for the optics, I'd go with the quick detach types. I keep my S2K in a padded 4 pistol case, and vertical space is limited.
Well, that would be super easy. All that you would have to do is screw a rail on the bottom of the grip, then mount a surefire grip/light combo on it. Easy that is, if you have a few hundred dollars just laying around.
Right now, I don't have access to a CNC machine, or posses the ability to program one anyway... After the fall semester of school I might make a run of them, once I figure out the CNC stuff. As it stands now, the parts cost about 25.00 (including the rail and hardware), and it takes me about 2 1/2 hours on the manual mill, so I'd need to charge about $75.00 if you wanted one... I know that is kind of steep, especially for a 200 something dollar gun, but, if you want, I probably would do it.
hey, do u sell these side folders? ill buy one bro!

Could you put the door springed hinge farther back on the rifle if you mounted the hinge on the side?

Still, The rubber liner where the hinge clasps would help prevent some issues. At least, that is what I did.
