@rob0wns5 he reach puberty, and flexibility has nothing to do with it, of course is easier when you're younger but you can start with 16 years and you can get a full split. stop screwing the video
I'm a Kung Fu student since almost 9 month and when I began I wasn't flexible at all now I can almost do what's in that video it's all about practicing again and again every day. :)
To all of the people saying that bouncing is bad, I as a martial artist of 16 years have to say that you are both right and wrong.
Bouncing when you are cold is most definitely BAD!!!
But after having warmed up, pushing to the edge of your flexibility and, very gently, exceeding it and then relaxing (bouncing softly) will improve your range of motion.
If the master and his student in this video hadn't already warmed up, I will eat my hat. I'm Australian, and we have big hats!
@DestiiOnAir no it won't , i do that , and i'm fine , but for those who want to be flexible ,it is really important to do the streches everyday , when i take a pause , of 2 days or 1 , it really slow me down , and when i get back to do streching i feel more pain . so don't give up people , you can do it!
RULE 1. Warm Up for at least 5 minutes, jumping jcks, kicking exercises, squat jumps will do.
RULE 2. Horse stance. In this psition, you should be able to feel the tension neath your thighs. Hold it for about 20 seconds. Do light alternate punching motions while maintaining your stance. Relax. And do it again. Do 2-3 sets. This simple exercise strengthens the thigh muscles that will help you stretch further. Plus, it improves your balance. Breathe easily.
be careful guys this move need more careful than they show up mybe u will get a good flixpilty but otherwise u will get injured kne like me so be careful :)
how much we should do that by week ? should i force to get down evry session ? i feel terrible pain the next days and rigidity , im 35 i ractised always sport and need advices ..
my muscles don't hurt at all when i try to do this, but my hip bones are driving me crazy!!is there sth wrong with me?will i ever manage to do the split?and how?thnx in advance..
@stellatennista i got same problem when doing leg streching, just stretch as much as u can (instead of forcing the stretching though, maintain it longuer in a position where u fill enogh pain) do all stretching at least 3 time a day and u wont complain anymore about it in a week or 2
i think its funny when muay thai challenge shaolin they challenge them to a really small ring meant for only muay thai to do good in and with rules that restricts the shaolin to less than half their moves
if a muay thai fighter went to the temple for a REAL fight he would leave alive
Is it possible for anyone to do this? I tried it for years practicing karate and while it did improve flexibility in my legs I could never get even close to all the way down. I convinced myself that my legs were too long and that some people are just not built for this, westerners in particular. Have I got this wrong?
@Dave54600 thats a load of crap, but to help u out always warm up your legs before doing the splits by jogging or just jogging on the spot then do all the basic leg stretching and once your done all of that the finale stretch is the middle split even the frontward splits come right before the middle splits.
I found the best way is to do a split as far as you can without feeling uncomfortable.
Stay in that position for some 5 mins.
Next time do more.
Muscles and nerves, that are actually the cause of pain, will grow and adjust to the new stretch over time.
If you can't do splits yet, it may take some time. If you rush it, you will probably jsut injure yourself. I think I could push myself to a full split.. but I won't. yet
this is complete bs - don't do what he's doing to learn the side splits. bouncing is a BAD idea to static (flexibility improvement). You need to do each leg's hamgstring *and* the crossover muscle in each leg -- meaning go down 45degrees btwn the center and the leg, before going center and at last try to slide the feet further apart. you need slick sliding and soft surfaces or your joints will be strained (which is a bad idea).
You have to consider the physical level of Shaolin Monks before you criticize their stretches. They've been doing these exercises for thousands of years and never run into ligament problems. Their level of flexibility are close to the level of contortionists and their power to size ratios are unmatched.
@dzetoad3 I have to disagree with what you said, they just have a different stretching technique, which as obviously worked. There is always debate about whether or not to bounce stretches or not, Shaolin teaching says to, as does Bill Wallace and numerous other experts, but some disagree and say bouncing is bad.
It also seems slightly foolish to critisise his technique, when he can perform the stretch to that level and is a member of perhaps the world's most highly revered martial arts school.
Ummm.... Thats really really bad... If you cant do all your basic stuff because of your stretching your just hurting your legs and ruining any chance of becoming flexable... All your gonna do is ruin your leg muscles. Your not the only one though, alot of people push it WAY to fast! You have to start somewhere, it takes a long time, dont give up. But hurting yourself isent helping you... Its making your legs weak, is that what you want? Start slow, or you wont get to finish... Understand?
yes i do i know that to my health teacher said the same thing let your leg muscles get used to stretching take it fast and your leg muscles are going to be weak
@rednite54 how much time did it take u? im like 5 inches from the floor since like 3 weeks....it geting harder and harder insteaf of better than better...im desperate lol
@rednite54 you can do light stretching everyday, and every 3rd day have someone force you down a little, not too much, but make sure you have AT LEAST 72 hours of healing time, this here are light stretches,i train Shotokan and this has gotten everybody in my Dojo just as and a few guys more flexible than he in the vid is,be careful,if it hurts then thats a bad sign, but if its that stretching "hurt" or weird pain, then it should all be good.
@rednite54 dude it doesnt depend on how hard you push your self down...it depends on how ofeten you do this and how long...otherwise you´ll injure yourself very bad
@CUNamYI i know man ive experienced it but i did it i just gotta be quick when i do it because when i get into position it takes me 9.2seconds to do it
yh but if u have no speed or strength ure nothing u need power to punch and kick speed to do it fast but spirit is kinda just so u dont giv up but if u dont no how to fight u will keep getting knocked down
I've been going to Kenpo Karate classes 4 hours weekly, and spending 30-45 minutes a day stretching, and I still cannot perfrom a split after about 2 months of this program. Is this normal? How long will it take me to be able to reach that amount of flexibility? I'm 19/male/healthy & athletic.

Don't try to solve the problem on your own hands, and certainly don't use any of these exercises where you push your body while stretching. It's a dangerous way of doing it.
I think it's better to get the heart pumping more and increase blood circulation before doing this stretch for the blood to flow in the expanded muscles
Light bouncing is not incredibly ballistic, these guys obviously survive it, as do chinese acrobats. Microtears happen in strength training too, it is just to keep them gentle and managable.
stephen ur an idiot coz u dont do this in 1 day...u do this every day or every 2 days(corect me if im wront) bit by bit so if ur gona bich at this guy complain at his face and see what hes goin to do to ur ass...no pain no gain
I've been stretching for a half a year and I did this stretch in socks and slid on a wooden floor all the way down and cracked my pelvis 3 times hurt like hell hahaha but i'm still at it after waiting a month to heal lol
I think how you practice is wrong. You should open your leg and sit on the floor firmly and try to get your face/body reach down to the floor so you can 100% control the movement so you don't get hurt. I Most of the videos on yourtube are wrong. It could be better to just ask someone who practice martial art to show you.
I joined a Wu-Tang Martial Arts class now, I've been stretching the proper way now. Not to say the other way doesn't make you more flexible it's just like you said I get more control doing it the right way.

You should remove this video. Teaching/highlighting to someone to bounch in a stetch in very bad. It is counter productive to the muscles and can cause injury to your knee joint. You do not have good tendon and ligiment support in your knees in that direction.
Ballistic stretching uses the momentum of a moving body or a limb in an attempt to force it beyond its normal range of motion. This is stretching, or "warming up", by bouncing into (or out of) a stretched position, using the stretched muscles as a spring which pulls you out of the stretched position. (e.g. bouncing down repeatedly to touch your toes.) This type of stretching is not considered useful and can lead to injury.
It does not allow your muscles to adjust to, and relax in, the stretched position. It may instead cause them to tighten up by repeatedly activating the "stretch reflex". Your video to me was indicating how to stretch to full straddle splits. if you were to do your stretch everyday with bouncing your flexibility ,for most people, would reduce.
I'm guessin you learnt this as a kid and hav maintained this or else your do lots of other types of stretching to compensate. This might hav been traditional in old shaolin but modern sport science has proved alot of traditional teachin methods tobe without benefit.Shaolin is brilliant but we all need 2 keep up to date especially when training others.I hope u at least read up on this stuff after this and have an informed view as to why you do each stretch instead saying its traditional. ;o) LOL
I use Static stretching & dynamic stretching to increase full flexibility. I personal never use ballistic stretching only for a light warm up and never in straddle splits or in any stretch where a muscles range of motion is limited. Ballistic stretching is a form of passive stretching or dynamic stretching in a bouncing motion. Ballistic stretches forces the limb into an extended range of motion when the muscle has not relaxed enough to enter it....
You make a lot of very good points, stephen, but bear in mind that modern exercise guidelines are also engineered for mainstream consumption, not for the select few who are training for a traditional martial art. These types of bouncing motions can certainly be dangerous for the uninitiated, but for someone who has trained their structure and awareness to a certain degree it can help to break through plateaus. Modern guidelines are meant for average person and also have litigation worries.
if you overstretch and bounce you will injure yourself, you stretch to where it is comfortable then you bounce and it greatly increases flexibility. all im going to say is they have been doing it for over 3000 years and they are (and were) much healthier than most people alive today. i think ill take my chances and bounce

"If some one is an idiot, that will last for a long time......" (C)
if you are idiot enough to overstrech and injure your muscules than
or you ignorent enought that when you strech for a first time it is painfull with out injuries.....
you will not injure your self since you should take a painkiller to bypass the pain and to overstrech your muscle.....

You should remove this video. Teaching/highlighting to someone to bounch in a stetch in very bad. It is counter productive to the muscles and can cause injury to your knee joint. You do not have good tendon and ligiment support in your knees in that direction.

I have no idea what kind of streches you use, but traditional strecthes inculde bouncing, and it will not kill your knee joint.

Ballistic stretching uses the momentum of a moving body or a limb in an attempt to force it beyond its normal range of motion. This is stretching, or "warming up", by bouncing into (or out of) a stretched position, using the stretched muscles as a spring which pulls you out of the stretched position. (e.g. bouncing down repeatedly to touch your toes.) This type of stretching is not considered useful and can lead to injury.
stephenwhelan31 3 years ago
