Vanessa Redgrave and Anouk Aimee look so much alike. Lynn and Vanessa are sisters but look nothing alike although they share similar styles. Vanessa looked so cool - so relaxed more like oh cool I am at the oscars wearing london fashion with these weird hollywood people.
WHAT A SURPRISE!!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Annie Bancroft sooo much, I watched this because I ADORE Virginia Woolf and wanted to see Liz Taylor accepting this award and what a surprise to see Anne here! YAYAYAY!!!
@Cobbleston You are a bigger idiot, from what I see, because that's what I'm saying actually: Mrs. Robinson was played by Anne Bancroft, and she accepted it on behalf of Taylor.
@etrax2000 I think the only other time it happened was at the 1941 Oscars when both Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland were nominated for best actress.
Just revisited this film. Say what you want about Elizabeth Taylor, but you can't deny that she was an amazing actress, most brilliantly displayed in Virginia Woolf.
Just revisted the movie a couple of days ago. No matter what people may think of Elizabeth Taylor, they can't deny that she was an incredible actress, displayed so brilliantly in WAOVF.
As the story goes Richard did'nt want to go Elizabeth did. She should have gone it was her crowning achievement!! What a great performance it was. The film should have won also
AHA! The moment when things come together. Anne was always a nervous self conscious person off screen. She gave few film/taped interviews (NO James Lipton) and those she did give she insisted on control. Yet now I realize she was filming The Graduate by day and the Awards were threatened by a TV strike that night. So I assume Mike Nichols may have asked her to accept for ET. BTW, Nichols accepted for Sandy Dennis that night. Any clip of that, AMPAS?
If there's a film that deserves all Oscars in acting categories, I can't think of anything better than "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". The film relies solely on the four characters, and the performances from the actors range only from very good to great. Simply amazing.
@bradley583 They're a bit too serious for my tastes. I do prefer classic cinema over alot of today's choices, but I feel like the atmosphere at the oscars is more hearty today than it was back in the 50's and 60's.
Vanessa Redgrave and Anouk Aimee look so much alike. Its like watching Redgrave in a black wig. Funny how Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave look nothing alike.
I don't know why, but this clip reassures me that her artistry will live, even though her human form is gone, people will still remember her for the amazing actress she was.
I loved a great moment earlier as there had been talk of the two Redgraves against each other and Olivia DeHavviland gave them a line from her sister (and one-time competitor) Joan Fontaine: "Remember, there are three other nominees."
Bancroft looks unbelievable!! I think this is the only time she accepted an award and it wasn't hers!! How about Vanessa's specs? Anouk is still just as breathtaking. Isn't that Lady Redgrave nervously scratching her neck in front of Lynn & John? And dear Ida of the NY Jewish theater. Looking radiant, she was 70 here.
Watch Vee give Anne a pat on the back as she passes (did she think it was Liz?). She did a similar thing to Pacino and others as encouragement when winning.
@JerseySurvivor I agree, Anne Bancroft is breath-taking here, but I must correct you, she had won her own Oscar 4 years before for "The Miracle Worker".
OH GOD! Anne Bancroft is gorgeous, what a voice!

With Charlize Theron in Monster and Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, most deserved win in the category.

@Tigerlily21 - I think Hilary Swank's performance in Boys Don't Cry was superior to Charlize Theron.

Bob Hope was the greatest host, followed by Johnny Carson.
Elizabeth winning for this performance is rightly deserved. Brilliant!
