Unless its been patched not to, the sentry does most certainly shoot out of the pillar.

The inside of the pillar isn't rendered by the game (think of the walls you can see through on one side but not the other when flying around in spectator) to save system memory and optimize the game overall. Because of that the sentry can shoot out, but players can't shoot in.
