Actually, Itachi did that so that the powers of the Uchiha would not be lost. By poking Sasuke on the forehead, he tranferred all of his powers he'd ever had to Sasuke, thus, keeping the clans abilities alive in their last member. Wow, I just remembered. There is one tiny flaw in Itachi's plan.

Sasuke dosen't have the Mangekyo Sharingan. I mean, according to Mandara's history, by transplanting a sibling's Mangekyo sharingan eyes into the other sibling would eliminate the blindness drawback present in the mangekyo sharingan. However, Sasuke never acheived the mangekyo due to him not wanting to become like Itachi. So in the event that Itachi does kill Sasuke wouldn't this void his victory?
