So what if the aria is a half step higher? Range isn't everything in an aria. Acting on stage is a much harder job than in some movie. Some of these voices would never be able to carry over a full orchestra on stage. I question some of the pitches in this movie as well. It sounds like some were tampered with and not nearly as authentic as those like Diana Damrau. Watch the London Covent Garden's 2003 version with the Royal Opera House orchestra. Damrau even sings it in German, not English.
This is so funny, the camera-angles are awful and The Quenn trows around her daughter like that. Ruins the true drama i think. It is to much like a satir.
How brilliant and witty this adaptation is, I just can't tell. Monostatos' aria is a fair example. And there is no performance to match this Der hölle Rache anywhere (yep, not even Sumi Jo :-))... Work of a genius!!!
i am making scripts for the school play magic flute english version.... please help me.... could you please send me the english lyrics of these tracks: Zu Hilfe!
lol we had to watch the Qeen of the Nights Aria at school, and everyone in the 6th grade named her the angriest Tinkerbell when she started to fly! she sing really good though!!
@anybodyealse abusive victims almost always try to defend their abuser...especially if it's a parent or significant other...I actually like that she's abusive towards Pamina..it makes The Queen a more dangerous villain
Petrova looks the same age as her "daughter"...that's a problem....She sounds great though and I can't believe that she sang the aria a half-step up. I don't think she'd have the voice to do that on stage though.
@happyactor6 First of all, I don't see any problem with with the fact that she actually looks like Pamina's ''daughter''. Welcome to opera and its many conventions! Second, what you think of her ability to sing this aria on stage a half-tone up is, IMHO, quite irrelevant. She DOES sing it a half-tone up in the movie and I'm absolutely happy (and amazed just like you) that she did.
And I do know she's prepared for them. She's a professional, for goodness sake. She make a career off those notes. I just didn't like them in this song. This is a very, very hard song for most sopranos to sing.
@SundaraKapasalathi Well, how often do you sing HIIIIGH F#'s? I doubt any soprano rarely goes over high Eb. *shivers* my vocal chords would be shreded by the end...
What are u talkin 'bout...this is the best version of the queen of the night

You have to suspend belief for a bit, remember the queen is a powerful sorceress and would therefore be as youthful as her powers would allow!!
Rattywotin 2 years ago 5
I couldn't find any evidence that she sings the aria a half step up, how do you know / where did you read that?
~thanks :]

@konigstephan It only appears to be a halftone up because of the PAL Format of the Video. I bet that the actual recording was in the original key.

when keys are moved up...its FOR the vocalist...some one probally couldnt sing low enough clearly
KindFurryBoy 2 years ago
Actually, the orchestra was tuned differently in Mozart's day, which makes everything sound up a key from the current standart of A = 440.
JupiterIV 2 years ago
@JupiterIV Keys in Mozart's day were LOWER than they are today, not vice versa.

This is ridiculous! What moron made this movie? Everything in this is so random. The stage versions are much better.
BroadwayKidNamedJosh 2 years ago
As much as I like Lyubov's voice, her very-high notes seem unprepared, like she's not used to making them.

@violinistx100 Yeah, same. I'm a mezzo-soprano, and I can't imagine singing half the notes even normal sopranos sing.
