As a teen growing up in one of the roughest parts of NY, I did not have have much in terms of academic role modeling and while I knew some folks who went to city college, I didnt know ANYONE who actually went away to school . To me-that was something rich, white kids did. I clearly remember watching A Different World and having my eyes literally opened to the the possibility that girls who looked just like me could go away to college, form positive relationships & Succeed! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
@bembry409 TV needed a show like this...I remember reading somewhere that enrollment in colleges everywhere increased sharply because of this show - I was in school when this show was on and I NEVER tried to miss an episode!
OMG! I'm JUST realizing this was a competition between DORMITORIES!!! Wow.. as many times as I've seen this episode, I thought it was a competition between schools. I'm so embarrassed..lol! Shut up!

@Ladieychas The guy on the crutches was not in the longest yard, the on the crutches died in 2000 his name is Jaime Cardriche. @bossb510 he probably looks familiar cause he was on Fresh Prince and Family Matters and other bit roles
Here is me. I just want to see more college educated black people period. Whether it's by way of the Ivy or HBCU. Let's just keep it moving forward and stop the perception of foolery in the street. So this is why I loved this show. Black people in a positive light.
@MzBubblez561 Oh no it's not. And none of that "she paid for it so therefore its hers" cause you know she probably had to return that back to the assigned hairstylist after the taping of the show.
@drpatty37 I checked your profile and saw your age. Which means you graduated from HU many moons ago. Alot has changed since then. I even remember a guest lecturer came to our Bio class at HU , she was from John Hopkins and said the same thing i was saying. We were all angry and hurt by her words..,but its a harsh reality.i never said ppl dont go to Ivys from Hu. I would be lying if i said that... but the frequency with which it happens is not as High as it should be
@MekkaSG;sorry for for my harsh response.I just hate that idea and want us (esp Black folks) to stop underestimating HBCU candidates. I'm 31y/o.I didn't choose an Ivy for medical school, but some of my classmates did-great! I grew up in all-white environments and was enjoying my HBCU experience so much that Howard and Meharry were my top choices(I only completed 3 apps). My lil sis, also HU alum, is at Meharry now, w/ about 250 on Step1 and will match well like me--1st choice in Jesus' name...
@MekkaSG If she had desired Ivy, worked for it &applied, she would be Ivy. Everyone's path is different. HU isn't perfect, but to this day, I will never regret shredding the letter of invitation to apply to harvard for undergrad & instead pursuing an experience at HU.The experience was was worth it to me, my sis & countless others. Those who went on to Ivys & those who didn't. Congrats on your success, I am proud of you. I hope we will all contribute and make schools like HU even better.
@ njoseph20, I am totally disgusted that you have chosen to spew misinformed, ignorant trash at innocent youtubers enjoying A different world. I am not sure about why you would not have been able to achieve your goals having completed your time at Howard University, but I, a proud Howard University alum and Laureate Scholar matriculated successfully by God's grace and am a practicing physician. My classmates from Howard went on to awesome medical schools--and wonderful residency programs

I went to an HBCU my freshman year of college, but then transferred back home to a state school. Watching A Different World always makes me wish I stayed.
@njoseph20 dont feel that way. I went to Howard and transfered. best decision i made. the social aspect was awesome, but their science program was a mess. I went to a State school which had better funding which equaled better lab facilities, enrichments programs, and resources for minorities.
I ended up getting into Columbia for Med School. I know i wouldnt have made it in if i stayed at HU.

@drpatty37 keyword Alum. when I was there it was awful. I received one of the full tuition scholarships and still felt I had to leave. They started a new initiative where they planned to add $1000 to tuition each year to improve facilities. I still have the lab book where we had to skip SEVERAL lab assignments because the resources were not available. SO HOW DARE YOU CALL ME MISINFORMED? i was relating MY experience.
@scootigger ME TOO - seeing step routines like that takes me back to my days at college, everyone out on the quad, all the sororities showing what they are made of!
what in the world have happened to all of these black shows they used ot have in the 90's we don't see them no more and i have ot sit here and tell my sons about them and let them look them up on the internet
I got my name from this show((Jaleesa)):). && Just like @imjustsofree said I am also the first person in my family to attend college && this show is definately the main reason why I wanted to go. I LOVE A DIFFERENT WORLD:)
i love watching this show. it's really nice to watch positive tv, there really isn't much positive black television for people my age. i start my senior year of high school this year and watching this show makes me want the HBCU experience. i'm not sure how it would be for me coming from a predominately white private school, but if it is anything like this show i would love it!
@bzandaz YOU can say that again - that's the year I graduated from U of Montevallo (not a black college, but the campus looked just the same on this show) - my college days were some of the best times of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Debbie Allen helped save this show. I loved Denise (Lisa Bonet), but you could tell that the RL drama behind the scenes was effecting the quality of the show. I never watched for her. It was always about Whitley, Maggie, Freddie, Kim, Walter, Dwayne...for me anyway.
@Vitaluv YES, when Lisa Bonet was on this show, it was kind of BLAH - I know that's bad to say, but it was true - She used to get into heated arguments with the show's then-producer, Anne Beatts - also, Bonet thought she had Bill Cosby on her side since he was Executive Producer of this show - BC solved everything by firing Beatts, bringing in Allen, and putting Bonet back onto HIS show-
Has anyone noticed how on the earlier episodes Whitley could sing and had rhythm and when she got with Dewayne she couldn't do either one of them??? I love this episode.
This episode just came on last night on tvone and I decided to google it today to see if anyone had it on youtube... One of my favorite episodes... Their routine was off the hook... Na na na na na is the best part then Jalessa's little end was funny!!!
i loved this show growing up this was when it was good to watch tv what happen to tv today ? all these reality tv shows and other drama nothing positive on tv anymore
I loved this show growing up. What the hell happend to tv, and how come we do not have more positive and uplifiting black shows such as A Different World?
It seemed to me like Debbie Allen went into her "Fame" bag of actors and pulled people that guest starred or co starred on the original series. I have noticed that:
Earth Robinson (The rival stepper) Glynn Turman (love interest), Mike Delorenzo (Student), Jasmine Guy was made to be the lead on the show when Debbie came. Originally, she was a supporting character.
One of the things my mom and I used to watch all the time together. Miss her a bunch. My favorite episode! Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na! :) They killed it Though! :) ;)
One of my all-time fave eppies, will be taping it when it comes on tomorrow night. Co-sign to Freddie shutting it DOWN! She even outshined choreographer Whitley, lol.
This show reminds of the times when I used to grow up around Howard University!!! Very Nostalgic! It makes me want to create more memories at the HBCU that I am attending now
@EducatedBeauty84104 OOOOOOOO OOOOH A B C D E F G Gilbert Hall's The one for me. We can't help it if were great, forgive a girl it's a natural state. Do tell were fine, do tell we're fly...now slideee. Hip Hop. Sorry girls from Libby Hall, next to us you are flowers on the wall. And the fellas who stand in line, outside our doors cuz they say that we are fine. We don't wear hair weaves, we know how to dress, we're smart, clean and cool hot and fresh.
I remember when I first saw this episode I watched it SO MANY TIMES that I memorized the step routine, I went around saying "We don't wear hair weave, we how to dress" lol...
This was one of my favorite episodes. I go to Howard and this kinda reminds me off the ResFest step show they have every year. Gilbert Hall could be the QUAD and Libby Hall could be the Annex. i mean this was influenced by debbie allen, a graduate of HU.
This show was filled with talent. Jasmine Guy(Whitley), Dawnn Lewis(Jalissa), Cree Summer(Freddy), and Charnelle Brown(Kim) were all singers. Cree Summer(Freddie) sang back up for Jasmine Guy when she released her debut album. Cree also released a album in the late 90's.
Cree(Freddie) does voice overs for cartoons, video games, and commercials. She was in VIBE magazine once and she said she makes a lot of money doing voice overs. All of them were very talented. Remember when they tied the snoody girl up so they could sing back up for Gladys Knight?lol
I just want to say that if it weren't for shows like The Cosby Show, and A Different World. I never would have gone to college. I am the only person in my entire family to ever go to college and receive a degree. So I just have to give my full thanks to Cosby for producing two great shows that encouraged people of color that they could be somebody. I humbly thank you Mr. Cosby. I Am Somebody.
OMG. I remember this. My sister and I would watch this over and over and over again! I still remembered the words and the routine even though I hadn't seen this in decades! Thanks the posting. Great memories
holy crap what year was this? 88? 89? cellphones were the size of bricks/beepers weighed your pants down/pc's were green screened and the size of a small ovens....WOW
i signed an online petition to request a reunion episode....i really hope they will....maybe if you love a different world we could all find a way to write carsey wener and petition for one.......just a thought...
i learned this routine too...i aint ashamed to say it! it was hot back in the day!

Cree also released a album in the late 90's.

and Dawn Lewis is back on Broadway now with Ashanti co-staring in The WIz

Cree(Freddie) does voice overs for cartoons, video games, and commercials. She was in VIBE magazine once and she said she makes a lot of money doing voice overs. All of them were very talented. Remember when they tied the snoody girl up so they could sing back up for Gladys Knight?lol

All the chicks in the front was handling they business and the one chick in the back was messing up bad while she tryna hate on Freddy!

And of course this routine came natural to the talented Ms. Jasmine Guy because she is a trained dancer.
