There are different ways you can fill in the blanks of what actually took place and why, but basically I think it is this: Inside the island there is the source of all light and dark, the negative energy has similar powers to the light, which prevents the dark, or the evil, from escaping and infecting humanity, but when Jacob's brother made contact with the light somehow the darkness become fused to his soul and used him as a vessel to become free.
...she also knew that jacob would protect it/the light. Hence she killed their real mother to mould them into her little pieces for a grander scaled backgammon. The church at the end-shows 2 angels of different color on opposite ends of the doors/Christian enters the doors into a beautiful bright light- meaning that these 2 things are neccessary for the existance/universe to work and its all apart of life. Its fundamentally budhism with a permiated sense of ying and yang.Freemasonary-to anextent
Reminscent of the symbiote found in the spider man comics. I think the directors wanted to get the message across to us that MIB wasnt evil; I do however see the significance in him crashing his head on the rock- his last conscience state was that of evil/anger/frustration/vengeance...he enters the light at the behest of his brother, and the "symbiote" amplifies these characteristics. The mother was a monster; and she alwayss knew that MIB would deliver her from her miserable existance.
If Mother was a smoke monster, then how was MiB able to kill her? MiB wasn't able to be killed until the Source was temporarily deactivated, so by that logic it would have to be off in order for Mother to die as well.
@GileadsFinest I believe that smoke monsters were able to be killed by normal means. The reason MiB was resistance to mortal weapon is because mother him that way.
Look at this line when the MiB was a child:
Boy in black: "Whats dead?"
Mother: "Something you will never have to worry about"
I believe that mother as the protector of the island has the power over creating rules as she see's fit. She made him immortal because she favoured the boy in black.
@Rude666 nicely put also noteworthy to note that it was through faith that jack and then hurley received the position of protector/not some ritual, all going into the light or whatnot. likewise with mother and MIB, it was through her own faith, and self-predication that she could allow MIB to kill her. On a limb here, but the knife he used...was hers? if so could have been apart of the previous "rules" between her and her mother maybe? who knows, only lindeloff and carton know
I'm sure the smoke monster was something that has been there ever since the beginning of time, like some sort of demon, but when Jacob threw his brother into the source it somehow managed to release the monster who then decided to manifest himself as the man in black, thus retaining most of his memories explaining the reason why he wants to go home, just like when he was Locke he quoted "you dont tell me what i can't do"
the official story is that once the mib was thrown into the heart he emerged as the smoke monster leaving his corporal body and forever being trapped as this entity. but i think most fans & myself think it would have been cooler if the smoke monster was a thing that was kept down there and when mib was thrown, he was released. watching it again, i'm not buying the o quinn's performance in 'last candidate'. he's a bastard! and yet the mib did nothing wrong and was 'killed'' for it.
@Damon242 I was definitely one of those, I always figured there was some guy who could look like dead people and controlled the monster, but little did I know they turned out to be one and the same.
I'm certain, having rewatched the series, that the reason he couldn't change back to his corporeal body or any other form after Jacob's death was because he was identified (hence the reason why Ilana and company carried Locke's body over, aside from the dramatic effect. Plus she knew afterwards that he could no longer change back) as not being who he looked like.
It makes sense, Every other time he was never identified until he had already changed back (eg Eko's death in 'The Cost of Living').
@Damon242 makes sense, man. some people on here are really smart. they really didn't give a reason why he couldn't change back, as usual. but this theory i like and support.
What the smoke monster is is quite obvious. Like michaelmyers87 says, the mother was the smoke monster herself. That cave, filled with light ,represents temptation. When the MIB first saw it, he explained how beautiful it was. Being the smoke monster, and being stuck on the island, was the punishment for going down into the light. The mother warned them not to go down. Just like how Cain was cast east of Eden in the story in the bible (which this is based on)
@abramstank1 It was never officially confirmed whether or not Cain's story was the basis for this, after all, the key similarities between the two stories are the fact that they are brothers, and that one of them is called 'Jacob'.
The light represents a tonne of things, but there are further hints that it has to do with whatever exists beneath the light-contraption seen in 'the end', which didn't exist in the events witnessed in 'Across the Sea' (the producers point them out in the commentary)
@cmarcallen The writers didn't have the story all mapped out when they began the series. They probably wanted something supernatural or mysterious to challenge the survivors. So the smoke monster's origins were probably different than what they had originally started off to be.
@cmarcallen He could have been a candidate... all the names needed to be scratched off so no one could replace Jacob... but at some point he started forming a plan and guiding/manipulating the main cast so he could get John's body/ the loop hole...
@cmarcallen Well, that scene I don't think had any narrative weight - it was more of a function in the pilot to help further establish the island and the existence of the monster.
Throughout the rest of the series, once realized after seeing season six, it becomes clear that each was for manipulation; first Locke, then there's Eko (think Richard in 'Ab Aeterno'), then ultimately Ben.
So it makes sense outside out of the pilot episode, where it only served a function.
man goes into a hole and comes out as a smoke monster who can take the form of anyone who is dead, what the fuck...this was why i was fucked of with the last series of lost it was just bollicks, 'ow the island contains a light source that if goes out everyone will die cause there is a bit of this light in everyone'...yer sure, ow this is a light house where jacob has been spying on people...ok, ow by the way drink this water from this stream and you will be immortal...sure, i could go on...
@SilvaG17 lost was always a fantasy show. A man crashed on the island paralysed from the waist down and he could walk again. You wanted a scientific explanation for that or something? You only have yourself to blame.
@SilvaG17 Well think of the island as a portal to the afterlife, it's forbidden for someone who is not pure of heart to enter the light, so the light cast his soul out from his body and as punishment he became fused together with the evil that is trapped on the island. Not very realistic, but it's fantasy so it doesn't really need to be.
I think that the "monster" is kinda like a parasite. It needs a 'host' to live. And it found a perfect one in MIb. A man who is full of anger and sadness, a perfect soul to manipulate. So basically evil latched onto him and finally saw its way out.
Theory: The black smoke is Apep, an evil deity that was imprisoned by Tawerets followers. The cork prevents the darkness (Apep, Hell, Underworld) from escaping. When MiB drifted inside his soul was possesed by Apep, allowing his soul to roam free on the island with supernatural abilities, although MiB is still himself. Apep saw MiBs determination to leave the island as he did. Once the light went out and the cork removed the underworld would be unleashed and everything would "cease to exist".
@LucasW180 Also, in the swan station, when the countdown hit zero and the Hyroglyphics flip over, a rough transtalion of these Symbols show means "Underworld".
I was thinking about this when MiB talked about how the other people on the island were "greedy, manipulative untrustworthy and selfish", which sounded like a spot-on-description of his future self. "Mother" talked about how all people had some of the "light" in them, so when the light is gone only the dark parts of the soul is left...
Ok this is my theory: Like it's been said here a "smokemonster" have apeared before, ever since ancient Egyptian times, like it's hinted on the temple-wall. Although the way it can appear (or be born) is when a dead body is to close to the source of light/good. The light the person had in him is possibly sucked back to it's core, while the dark is let loose to roam free as a "dark soul" (in the form of Smokey, yes). "Mother" may have been the last Smokey since she knew what the cave could do...
The smoke monster was already there before jacob and mib, it just took the form of mib like he did locke, and over time mibs personality really took over, we saw this happening when it became locke, lockes personality/memories etc were coming through. Also in the scene with ben and alex under the temple theres a heliographic of the monster showing it was from ancient eqyption times. Theres more but ive written enough already lol
@itspeejay if the smoke monster was there before jacob and mib dont u think it wuld show that?and besides.jacob said he was responsible for the monster.
@LightJackel09 Look at when ben saw the monster at the temple, there was a hieroglyphic of the monster on the wall, and how did mother kill all those people in the village and destroy the well, she either was the monster or had some sort of control over it. When mib entered the cave the monster started to use his form, that's why his body was there the same as lockes was. Over time the memories of mib became stronger, we saw this happening when it used lockes form too.
@itspeejay it seems likely that the mother was dual-natured (Protector and Monster), especially given how she is discussed in the 'Across the Sea' commentary.
@Damon242 Yeah I think you're right, maybe she had the abilities of both the light and the darkness. "Mother" passed the light onto Jacob but her actions lead to "Brother" turning evil and taking her place as the smoke monster. He even says the same thing about humans she did "They come, they fight, they corrupt, and it always ends the same."
See, i get this, but it still doesnt explain, why the hell a dead body goin into sum energy, made a black smoke monster? a talkin, walkin, fighting, black smoke monster...why dint it do what this kind of scene does in most films, and sumthing just blow up, or the earth brake in half or sum shit?
The main reason for the Black Smoke 'judging' people was to gather information on them so that it could later manifest itself as a ghost or manipulate the castaways into killing eachother. All to leave the Island.
@iGoodLuckPuppy When anyone, Eko, Locke were confronted by the Smoke Monster it was taking 'snapshots' of them via the flashes of light (like Juliet if you remember back to Left Behind). It couldn't physically kill any of them until they were compromised, pregnant or did not regret their sins like Mr. Eko.
So it manifested itself as Christian, Walt, Yemi and others to manipulate the survivors, in Jack's case, lead him off a cliff, Shannon's case lead her to Ana Lucia's gun.
And it acted more like a judge/defender of the island when mib was locked in the cabin. Once mib got free when clair moved the ash, mib got free and seemingly took over again as host of the black smoke. I guess either jacob/mibs mom, jacob or the island itself was controlling the black smoke when mib was locked inside the cabin.
Also when Locke had Desmond unplug the cork, he lost his imortality and ability to turn into the black smoke. This is because MIB failed his task of protecting the heart of the island. He either knew he was supposed to, or didnt know. Also dont forget when the Man in Black was locked in jacobs cabin that the smoke was still able to move around and attack people then.
Basically the smoke monster was its own entity that could have a person be its "host", or their was a series of smoke monsters gaurding the island. Itss trongly hinted that Jacobs and MIBs step mom was some form of monster herself. She obliterated the mibs village and the well. A human coudnt do that, neither could someone like jacob who can only heal and be immune to getting killed by someone unless they're permited to or somthing.
@MichaelMyers87 yeah she was either the monster before, which is why she thanked mib when he killed her, or she had some form of control over it, maybe by using that thing ben used when alex was shot to summon it.
Plus, there's also the fact that in "Dead Is Dead," we saw hieroglyphics near the Temple that depicted the Smoke Monster and seemed to predate Jacob and MIB. So, MIB couldn't have been the first one. It's also interesting to note that when MIB killed Mother, he unknowingly followed the instructions Dogen gave Sayid to kill him. He stabbed her in the chest without letting her speak to him, whereas MIB said "Hello Sayid" before Sayid stabbed him. There may be truth to those instructions after all.
@MichaelMyers87 Agreed...though I would've thought it would have been more eerier and creepier if the Smoke Monster wasn't MIB/Jacobs brother intentionally. Like it was an entity that lived behind the light inside the cave and used MIB's body to move around.
Cerberus is a THREE headed creature that gaurded the gate to the underworld/hell. And under that cork that desmond moved was a something like lava. Hinted to be Hell itself. The island wasnt a cork to keep the man in black on it, since it existed long before the man in black did. But it was a cork to keep hell, or whatever was under that cork that was bright red and looked like lava.
I still think that Jacob's brother and the smoke monster is the same. They both have the same desire - to get away from the island. Jacob's and his brother's mother had made it so that they couldn't hurt each other - the smoke monster was never able to hurt Jacob and had to find someone who could do it for it. And finally, their mother said that the ones who enter the light will experience something worse than death - why would his brother experience something like that if he was dead?
This is 100% correct. The Smoke Monster was around before the Man in Black was born. Man in Black was unable to go down to the heart of the island. He had to have Desmond do it. But when Desmond went down in that room, you could see those 3 VENTS. Just like the smoke monster was 3 seperate ones that merged together at times. And it was nicknamed Cerberus.
Black smoke is some kind of future experiment, I think. Yes, people in future (Charles Wildmore in alternative reality? Dr. Aaron?) create the smoke monster to bring back the inland, change the past.
Jacob brother was send into the future, and he back with that form, and not another - becouse that's make him immortal.
When MIB was thrown in there, his soul released the devil (the black smoke monster) and put out the light (actually just kinda hid the light; if you remember the last episode of season four we see the light again when Ben turns the wheel and in fifth season every time the island moves in time). When this happened, his soul became forfeit and his body left the cave dead. Jacob is not God. Jacob watches over and protects God's province.
The light is God. But where there is good, evil must exist because one cannot exist without the other, so the devil is in there as well. Since God's presence is the ultimate and greatest, God overpowers the devil and is able to shine the light around the world.
@Maca68 smoke is the devil Jacob is God? gimme a break. they cant tailor to religion, they have to make it pseudoscience meets pseudoreligion meets the spirit realm
@Maca68 Yes it's annoying that it is so vaguely explained but there is a meaning to it all. The light represents positive energy, the same energy that is used to heal, it is also a gate to the afterlife, which explains all the paranormal events throughout the series. The mythology in Lost exists in itself, so it can't be explained with any 1 religion, and it isn't "magic" either, it's just a science that humans can't comprehend.
Mib is not bad. Jacob's not bad either. Mib died, and the smoke monster has mib's body and some of his memories and the darkness; but there was a kinda confession in mib. he was sad for killing her own mother. He was crying. He wasn't a bad person. SMOKEY IS!
@martonszokor MIB IS the Smoke Monster. His mother told that "if enter in the cave, happened to him something worse than the death".
MIB lost his humanity when enter in the cave. Lost his body. If was the Smoke monster, he didn't tell this things that told in "Ab Aeterno", for example (he told that Jacob stole him his humanity).
He wasn't a bad person, yes, but he's crazy now because has been catched in the Island for 2000 years.
Wow, that's it? No further explanation? Jacob's like: 'Hmm... Makes sense to me!" and skips off? There's a difference between being ambiguous and being completely fucking irrational.
Damn Jacob is a true fighter... I bet he can beat even Jack

itspeejay 1 year ago
@itspeejay I was referring to your theory that the monster assumed the identity of MIB and that his memories strengthened over time.

The main reason for the Black Smoke 'judging' people was to gather information on them so that it could later manifest itself as a ghost or manipulate the castaways into killing eachother. All to leave the Island.
WaldronicTomotron 1 year ago
@WaldronicTomotron i dont get it.. lol
iGoodLuckPuppy 1 year ago
@iGoodLuckPuppy Did you watch the show at all?
WaldronicTomotron 1 year ago
@iGoodLuckPuppy When anyone, Eko, Locke were confronted by the Smoke Monster it was taking 'snapshots' of them via the flashes of light (like Juliet if you remember back to Left Behind). It couldn't physically kill any of them until they were compromised, pregnant or did not regret their sins like Mr. Eko.
So it manifested itself as Christian, Walt, Yemi and others to manipulate the survivors, in Jack's case, lead him off a cliff, Shannon's case lead her to Ana Lucia's gun.

But once mib started sinking the island the smoke abandoned him.
MichaelMyers87 1 year ago
@MichaelMyers87 the smoke didnt abandond him, turning off the light turned him mortal
curryshop6 1 year ago
And then the smoke started activley attacking people that the mib simply wanted to kill, and wasnt only judging "bad" people.
MichaelMyers87 1 year ago
And it acted more like a judge/defender of the island when mib was locked in the cabin. Once mib got free when clair moved the ash, mib got free and seemingly took over again as host of the black smoke. I guess either jacob/mibs mom, jacob or the island itself was controlling the black smoke when mib was locked inside the cabin.
MichaelMyers87 1 year ago
Also when Locke had Desmond unplug the cork, he lost his imortality and ability to turn into the black smoke. This is because MIB failed his task of protecting the heart of the island. He either knew he was supposed to, or didnt know. Also dont forget when the Man in Black was locked in jacobs cabin that the smoke was still able to move around and attack people then.
MichaelMyers87 1 year ago 2
Basically the smoke monster was its own entity that could have a person be its "host", or their was a series of smoke monsters gaurding the island. Itss trongly hinted that Jacobs and MIBs step mom was some form of monster herself. She obliterated the mibs village and the well. A human coudnt do that, neither could someone like jacob who can only heal and be immune to getting killed by someone unless they're permited to or somthing.
MichaelMyers87 1 year ago 25
@MichaelMyers87 yeah she was either the monster before, which is why she thanked mib when he killed her, or she had some form of control over it, maybe by using that thing ben used when alex was shot to summon it.
itspeejay 1 year ago
Plus, there's also the fact that in "Dead Is Dead," we saw hieroglyphics near the Temple that depicted the Smoke Monster and seemed to predate Jacob and MIB. So, MIB couldn't have been the first one. It's also interesting to note that when MIB killed Mother, he unknowingly followed the instructions Dogen gave Sayid to kill him. He stabbed her in the chest without letting her speak to him, whereas MIB said "Hello Sayid" before Sayid stabbed him. There may be truth to those instructions after all.
Cyberhamon 1 year ago
@MichaelMyers87 Agreed...though I would've thought it would have been more eerier and creepier if the Smoke Monster wasn't MIB/Jacobs brother intentionally. Like it was an entity that lived behind the light inside the cave and used MIB's body to move around.

@MichaelMyers87
Jacob could summon people to the island using giant title waves.
MegaVCN 9 months ago
Cerberus is a THREE headed creature that gaurded the gate to the underworld/hell. And under that cork that desmond moved was a something like lava. Hinted to be Hell itself. The island wasnt a cork to keep the man in black on it, since it existed long before the man in black did. But it was a cork to keep hell, or whatever was under that cork that was bright red and looked like lava.

now the series is over, its kinda fun to read everyones predictions. like the one about the smoke monster being a future experiment. its fun.
MrJohnnyazn 1 year ago
I still think that Jacob's brother and the smoke monster is the same. They both have the same desire - to get away from the island. Jacob's and his brother's mother had made it so that they couldn't hurt each other - the smoke monster was never able to hurt Jacob and had to find someone who could do it for it. And finally, their mother said that the ones who enter the light will experience something worse than death - why would his brother experience something like that if he was dead?
DeepAquaNeptune 1 year ago 2
So I think MIB's soul is the smoke monster. His body was probably just left behind.

I thought the same thing this is the same person but i read others comments, i have doubts

does jacob has esp powers beside living long time,, and why cant black smoke kills him directory,??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hgwpvhx 1 year ago
@hgwpvhx Because the mother made it so they could never kill each other. The Man in Black finally found a loophole to kill him by using Ben.

@YouFuckenConformists "the smoke monster was just waiting for a host"
This is 100% correct. The Smoke Monster was around before the Man in Black was born. Man in Black was unable to go down to the heart of the island. He had to have Desmond do it. But when Desmond went down in that room, you could see those 3 VENTS. Just like the smoke monster was 3 seperate ones that merged together at times. And it was nicknamed Cerberus.
MichaelMyers87 1 year ago
Black smoke is some kind of future experiment, I think. Yes, people in future (Charles Wildmore in alternative reality? Dr. Aaron?) create the smoke monster to bring back the inland, change the past.
Jacob brother was send into the future, and he back with that form, and not another - becouse that's make him immortal.
zaratustrascarlett 1 year ago
When MIB was thrown in there, his soul released the devil (the black smoke monster) and put out the light (actually just kinda hid the light; if you remember the last episode of season four we see the light again when Ben turns the wheel and in fifth season every time the island moves in time). When this happened, his soul became forfeit and his body left the cave dead. Jacob is not God. Jacob watches over and protects God's province.
baskindude 1 year ago
The light is God. But where there is good, evil must exist because one cannot exist without the other, so the devil is in there as well. Since God's presence is the ultimate and greatest, God overpowers the devil and is able to shine the light around the world.
baskindude 1 year ago
@baskindude The light isn't God. Is magnetic energy...
The devil and God doesn't exists... the black smoke is a soul without a body...
But in this time they think that this light is special, when is only the magnetic energy that they can see in the cave.

This doesn't explain anything.
This is why writers shouldn't try to go too far indepth with anything.
The Smoke is the devil, Jacob is God. Done. <- That is how it should have been done, this makes no sense.
Maca68 1 year ago
@Maca68 smoke is the devil Jacob is God? gimme a break. they cant tailor to religion, they have to make it pseudoscience meets pseudoreligion meets the spirit realm
tjfoz 1 year ago
@tjfoz ...Except this isn't the spirit realm. What this is, is Disney esque... "the warmest light you could ever feel"? Lol, cheesy...
I'd rather them make up a quick, overused explanation, than prove they actually had no way for this programme to go with this explanation.
Maca68 1 year ago
@Maca68 Yes it's annoying that it is so vaguely explained but there is a meaning to it all. The light represents positive energy, the same energy that is used to heal, it is also a gate to the afterlife, which explains all the paranormal events throughout the series. The mythology in Lost exists in itself, so it can't be explained with any 1 religion, and it isn't "magic" either, it's just a science that humans can't comprehend.
CosmicUndeadElf 6 months ago
@CosmicUndeadElf of screw that "meaning behind it all." they ha one answer to the story "ITS MAGIC! I AINT GOTTA 'SPLAIN SHIT!!!"

Mib is not bad. Jacob's not bad either. Mib died, and the smoke monster has mib's body and some of his memories and the darkness; but there was a kinda confession in mib. he was sad for killing her own mother. He was crying. He wasn't a bad person. SMOKEY IS!
martonszokor 1 year ago
@martonszokor MIB IS the Smoke Monster. His mother told that "if enter in the cave, happened to him something worse than the death".
MIB lost his humanity when enter in the cave. Lost his body. If was the Smoke monster, he didn't tell this things that told in "Ab Aeterno", for example (he told that Jacob stole him his humanity).
He wasn't a bad person, yes, but he's crazy now because has been catched in the Island for 2000 years.
(Sorry by my English, I'm Spanish xD)

yes, there is an explanation, but you have to see (if you haven't) the rest of the episode

Wow, that's it? No further explanation? Jacob's like: 'Hmm... Makes sense to me!" and skips off? There's a difference between being ambiguous and being completely fucking irrational.
