Have weight limits on single-seat flying (adjusted for gender). Setup a scale; 200 Lbs for women, 240 Lbs for men.

It should go by height and weight, because somebody can be 5'1 and 200 lbs and be spilling over into the seats beside them, or someone can be 6'4 and 200 lbs and is only taking up half/three quarters of their seat. :)

I don't think Kevin Smith posed any safety risk because he is simply not that fat. There are people in this country who weigh 400+, if he's a safety risk then so is most of the US.

A lot of fat people are in denial..This woman is one. They are covering up for what is THEIR weaknesses..I would be very scared to be BLOCKED by him if I had to get out of the plane in a hurry or go to the restroom in a hurry. And WHY should people have to pay for the larger space use for FAT people..STOP the OVEREATING and LARGE portions...You don't only have FAT to deal with .But are perceived as a LOSER when you make EXCUSES!

Hey I am not heavy. I am actually underweight, I am stating this to avoid personal attacks. This was a clear cut case of bigotry and a need for policy change. Flying is a customer service business and you don't treat any customer this way. Should he lose weight? Maybe. But that wasn't the case and the woman speaking for the airline is clearly an agenda pushing twit who didn't do her research.

I've sat next to a fat person before, and it is very uncomfortable. She was sweating the whole time and I had to sit on half of my seat to accommodate her "needs." Either buy two seats or fly first class.

I could say the same thing to you. If you don't like sitting next to a fat person why don't you ask to perchase an extra seat or fly first class? Next you'll complain about the handicapped and how they make you feel all uncomfortable. Also, I've sat next to alot of thin people who were all sweaty and nasty on planes before. Should they be forced to buy an extra seat too? What about those who are shorter than most people? Are they a saftey issue. Slippery slope ahead!

That's not necessarilly true. From what I heard she said "No, it's a short flight I'll be fine". That's a little different from "it's a short flight". SW Air is spinning heavily in their defense and has been proven to be dishonest throughout all this.

First of all, it's not up to the attendant. It's up to the pilot (who did not even see Mr. Smith. Second of all, I question who it is that wants publicity, the fat man who was publicly embarased from this or the airlines who gets free advertising. Bad advertising, yes, but in an effort to make Mr. Smith look like an all eating mass who's responsible for the problem in the first place in an effort to be looked upon favorable, advertising non the less. The problem I have is how can you look at someone and call them a safety hazard? I can have pilot look at my brown skin and say 'HEY A BLACK MAN IS HERE! DUE TO HIS NOMADIC ANCESTRY HE IS RELATED TO SOMEONE WHO MIGHT BE MUSLIM!" If this was to be true, then hell I would never fly. To be honest, this type of subject can not and will not have any real means of an end.

Hell we are not saying not to be healthy but that is a personal struggle for everybody. Size should not be the barometer for health. I seen many thin triple bypass patience. Many thin with cancer, diabetes, etc.
If being thin was so easy then why it's a billion dollar industry. If being thin why don't they make it a 4 day work week with a 1 day exercise or activity day and that being a payed day if it's such priority. Give me the time.

They refuse to cover the cost of people who need bigger seats?! Why wouldn't southwest put in bigger seats if THEIR CUSTOMERS want/need it. To me that just shows that southwest thinks they are to good for some of their PAYING customers. Thats ridiculous and bad business.

I don't have a problem with Southwest, or any other airline, having a policy that states if you're obese you have to buy two seats.
The problem I have is that the policy is subjective and left up to the stewardess or customer service. The subjective standard of being able to put the arm rests down comfortably. Smith said he did it.
Have weight limits on single-seat flying (adjusted for gender). Setup a scale; 200 Lbs for women, 240 Lbs for men.

@digibal235 maybe a little more than 200 for women. Because I'm 5'8, 215lbs and I fit in my seat perfectly, with room to spare. But I do agree with the weight limits on certain searing. It should go by height and weight, because somebody can be 5'1 and 200 lbs and be spilling over into the seats beside them, or someone can be 6'4 and 200 lbs and is only taking up half/three quarters of their seat. :)
