Pucini in Mozart... and here is the result ! No color wrong tradition and almost no accent... not counting the legato. She is no Janet Baker or Margaret Price for sure,,,, style is so important for Mozart and totally absent here !
lol, i am soooo sorry i really am!! don't get me wrong please!! but LOOOOOL of COURSE this is Callas! God, unmistakeable! :) And again, please i'm not being mean! it's just..that... it is impossible to be someone else with this voice! :)
I love Callas as much as anyone else, but come on guys. This is bad. She neither had the technique nor the temperament for Mozart. She even famously said on one occasion that she found most of Mozart's music to be rather dull. This song brutally exposes all of the weaknesses in her voice that were overlooked over in Italian rep because of her pathos. But I think in Mozart the pathos is in the elegance of the phrases and pristine execution of his vocal lines. Ill take Kiri and Renee in this role.
@OperaBoy1986 I love love LOVE this woman and god only knows how much. But she is to sing Verdi, Bellini..(....). But not Mozart. No. And that is not a bad thing. Wish i had the voice to sing JUST Verdi's and Bellini's :) Ohh and Rossini's! Hm, i would choose These 3 over Mozart,i would. (i know, i'm a sinner)
Yes, definitely Callas - a studio recording at the end of 1963 - beginning of 1964. Late for her and there is some frailty, but special and affecting as was almost always the case with that utterly unique voice.
As much as I like Callas, I think this interpretation is really not appropriate. She makes it sound as if it was an Italian dramatic opera from the XIX century!!!
There is a lovely intimate feel. This is the Countess' private grief summed up in Mozart's divine music. The voice is a little worn, but the technique consumate. Few singers have come so close to expressing the essence of Mozart's genius. Callas had a great heart. That is why she could hear into and translate the music for us in this way with her voice and imagination.
con tutto il rispetto...non mi piace. La Callas, per me, era insuperabile nei ruoli drammatici...in cavalleria ad esempio, oppure nel Pace mio Dio...ma questo repertorio proprio no....
it's sad to hear her sound tired and sort of rough round the edges, but then again it kind of fits the story of the character, and that's what Callas would have intended anyway. didn't she try to sound tired for a certain part once, in order to sound authentic?
She recorded this too late. Granted, dramatically this is the most insightful performance of this often sweetly tweeted aria. But her voice was already too far gone here. The tremolo, the tension even above an A, the choppy line... Still a dramatic, artistic treasure. If only she had recorded this in 1953!
It is hard to imagine a deeper rendition of this difficult piece. Even my beloved Leontyne Prince odes not convince me in this aria. Callas' 'attacchi' are exemplary although this recording belongs to a time when her voice was quite strained. But this does not matter with an artist of the caliber of Callas. Had she sung something like 'bring me a glass of water', she would have made it sound leaden with pathos and drama.
To MegaBreez: the need to record this aria was just to have as much as possible from this great artist. Of course, it should have been recorded a lot earlier...
I would remove this recording, it is sorry to hear this performance, very sad, voice is gonei am wondering how old she was, and what was the need to record this?
It's completely astounding how technically impeccable she could put to use even this shreaded voice. And musically speaking this ranks up with the finest singers who have sung this piece.
@Lindow not sure I have comented on this before. Agree despite all the problems she could still "wring out" something amazing! I find it morbidly fascinating to listen! Terrifying!
Maria Callas è stata una grande anzi grandissima cantante, ma credo che Renee Fleming riesca a dimostrare molto di più il sentimento della contessa. claire
Sounds vulgar. All that sliding around. I can understand why people liked her in those days, but I can't see that she compares to singers like Monsterrat Caballe, or Cecilia Bartolli
I can't say that Mozart isn't for her voice - she never really sang that much of it for me to say so definitively. I've definitely heard better tho. My problem is that the music just does nothing for me and there is nothing Callas could do to change that.
This is Maria Callas! Listen to the timbre, the vibrato and to the pronunciation of the 'm'. Unmistakeable! Yes, some pianos and low notes sound wierd, but it is her.
@leoperarm SO RIGHT~! The timbre is unmistakable - to this day - among all sopranos - like a fine port wine, and even though the renditions of Jessye Norman or Kiri Te Kanawa are pefect for this, the depth and passion of Callas, make for divine magic.. to a level untouched - also remarkable considering the quality of the recordings in Callas's time - can one just imagine if she were alive now and recording what it would sound like - the resonance would be magnificent beyond all measure~!
@leoperarm QUITE RIGHT~! Yea, she does have a unique sound. Listening to the vibrato, this sounds like it might have been sung towards the end of her career. Have you noticed the vibrato of singers as they get older, the pitch oscillates more when they sing. She was 1 of a kind though. She also had a unique beauty about her. Especially those "eyes". She was a true "diva".
this doesnt sound like maria callas- not from the first note- whoever is singing this is either a very sick maria callas, or someone who shouldnt even be singing that high

No. La Callas was not for Mozart. Her height is sharp, her timbre much too aggressive. I don't believe what she sings.

True eurotrash statement. I saw both preform this on the stage and Te Kanawa was the better of the two.

@RRydnew Are you sure you're not just saying that because Te Kanawa's voice is - how shall we put it - more "timid"? :)
