I like her release move, but since its only a C value, no one ever performas it. Czechoslovakia basically forced vera into an early retirement from gymnastics, but she is by no means dead
would like to see gymnasts have their own political protest by deliberately doing older style routines next time they compete. The judges will be mad. USGF/FIG will go bonkers.
I really love the old bars. I enjoy today's uneven bars, but it seems as if by moving them apart, the point of having two bars dissolved. The low bar seems to be just a hassle for gymnasts now.
it looks like they're only a foot and a half or so apart here at the base. now you could probably bet on around four feet? that's a guess, but somewhere in that ballpark.
it's not seven feet at the base. but if you stretched out with your hands on the high bar and you feet on the lowbar (or, you know.. if that's the direction you're measuring) then yeah, i'd say maybe around five and a half to six feet, but probably not seven. that's why some girls have to be so careful about hitting their toes.
yeah, they're quite a bit further apart today. so because of that, almost all the skills are different. which is a shame, because they could do some really gorgeous moves with the bars the way they were.
now it's less about elegance and grace, and much more about power. which is cool too, but ya know.. it takes away from the artistic aspect of it.
Too bad both approaches couldn't be accommodated in maybe two separate events, but I suppose that'd be unrealistic to expect people to compete in both.
that is too bad. it would be nice if that type of bar set would be available maybe not for competition but at least just for practice to gain different types of skills. a lot of coaches i'm sure would allow their gymnasts during the non-competitive season to work with this bar set, just to learn about the history and everything.
have you seen vera's floor routine? it's very different from floor today as well, but it's so stunning. you might enjoy it.

Vera got married in Mexico City at the Catholic Catedral Chruch right after the Gymnastic events was completed. I know this because I was there!

Uneven bars was so interesting back when they were close enough together for the bars to be used equally.
The routines were so creative.

Four feet? I'd say a good seven feet.

i always wanted to try bars like that. it's so much prettier more interesting than how we do bars nowadays.

So what's different? They're further apart now as per SonyaNatalia?

@boodiba I thought the exact same thing! In all the other events, I like the modern style better, but in uneven bars, I love them both.

that looks alot like olga korbuts routine and nadia comaneci's dismount

Considering it was before either of them were in the Olympics... you're completely wrong.
briaberger 3 years ago 3
The dismount you're referring to wasn't Nadia's. It was part of the compulsory routine. Every gymnast there did that dismount.
