People are going to hate me for quoting Harry Potter, but: "Of course it's happening inside your head, Hedwig! But why on Earth should that mean it isn't real?"
This scene is beautiful, and however you think the ending actually played out, the meaning of this sequence is touching and true.
This scene sends some Hedwig fans into hot debate. The hypothesis is that Tommy and Hedwig are the same person, and this is going on in Hedwig's ego as she finally accepts who she really is, a transgender. It's not without holes but does offer a new perspective. In the end this movie is far more cerebral than linear and perhaps there's more than one explanation. Great song and truly powerful movie.
@TheCaptainstupendous I think that Tommy Gnosis and Hedwig are the same person, just more in a different spiritual and psychological way. Hansel had to become Hedwig to get freedom, so his male identity and desires were heavily suppressed for years. He finally found Tommy and transferred all of that ambition, energy and talent onto. But Hansel as Hedwig also realizes that he doesn't make a very good woman either and is envious of Yitzhak's talent and ability, so she actively represses him.
@TheCaptainstupendous (cont.) So in these last scenes you see Hansel coming to terms with both Hedwig and Tommy Gnosis to make himself whole again. When he was chasing Tommy's tour, Hansel was trying to get back the other half of he gave up and didn't think he needed to be happy.
The first time I saw this movie, this scene shook me to my core. It was like Tommy was singing directly to me and saying words I needed to hear. This movie changed my life and I'm so grateful it did. I actually got the tattoo Hansel/Hedwig has at the end because of the impact this movie had on me.
I get serious goosebumps every time I hear this. Michael Pitt did such a great job trying to make his star shine amongst the supernova's littered throughout the rest of the cast.
I sang this when I was 12 to audition for the school talent show. I didn't get in. But I was thrilled with my song choice while my father/ the people who were choosing the "the talent" were utterly confused
Something lovely I've just noticed; the way Tommy loses his own voice at 'you know you can follow my voice'. His lips stop moving, but the song goes on- and Hedwig may lose him, but she's whole.
Discovered this movie last week, and now I'm obsessed.
This scene always makes me cry. I know what it is like to lose my other half. I feel like half my very soul is missing. I guess I was one of the lucky ones to actually find my exact other half. My perfect male half. Now he's gone and I will never be whole.
i'm 43 and a very good friend of mine turned me on to this movie a few years ago. WOW what a FANTASTIC soundtrack... this song (both tommy's and headwig's version) is my favorite... rock on FANS
What is so moving and touches ones soul about Hedwig is deeper than any loss or pain but it's the loss of self and the meaning of path to finding that where you have been is not truly your path and finally breaking down which happens at the end of Hedwig is when he/she recognizes there never was a need to find her soul mate she was already whole. Hence the change in the tatoo on Hedwigs hip makes this clear, though Hedwig is still melting down and metaphorically left alone to move forward.
The Holocaust is at the core of "Hedwig" as a subtextual theme. The whole concept of a divided Germany, a mother who pretends to idealism but who is really an inhuman bitch, who forces her son to put his head in the oven, and the scene at the end, where, naked and tatooed, he walks out into the world- all little hints.
I love this movie so much, it makes me tear up every time. This is probably my favorite song on the soundtrack (Tommy's version about Hedwig) even though the entire soundtrack is amazing. If anyone hasn't seen it you definitely should.
Oh man, just noticed a really cool bit of possible symbolism:
Tommy is wearing nothing but the black full-legged pants, so sometimes with a black background, it looks like he just has his top half, whereas Hedwig is wearing black shorts which, with a black background, makes it look as though he's cut in half, but still has two full halves. Tommy still lacks his other half, and Hedwig is entire on his own, just torn apart by his affair with Tommy(?).
Either this song or Midnight Radio are my favourite songs. I'm not a big fan of the Hedwig version of Wicked Little Town though.
I love how when he says 'Alone again in some new wicked little town' he sounds like he's sort of crying. It's odd to describe, but I just love how he sings it.
this is the best song in the movie... cuz with all the changes you been through, it seems the strangers always you, alone again in some new wicked little town, you know you can follow my voice then he stops singing, i can feel hedwigs hurt and aloneness, do you really understand how much you took? I dont think so...
This move is something... I know there is something more than easily meets the eye here, I am trying to figure it out, I only was able to see it a few times... something make me know more is here to learn...
really? I thought of this one as more hopeful. the first version highlighted Hedwig's dependence on the "cosmic lover preassigned", and this version covers Tommy aknowledging her strength of character and the ability to rise above the need of a gender identity or of becoming "complete" through another person, as well as appologizing profusely for breaking his/her heart. I agree, i cry every time i hear it, but in a happy way. : )
I always heard it as him saying his belief in a destined lover, god, or any afterlife was false and pointless, and since he's nothing left Hedwig might as well settle with Tommy since he's the only one left. But it's so hard to tell, this show leaves so much open for interpertation, I love how it causes people to think so much, it opens your mind to different possibilities.
@ronnehh, it's about destroying the myths that guide us (particularly those related to love). In the Western world, we are told that love is destined, that we are constantly in search of our "other half". This is reinforced by the Judeo-Christian ideas of heaven and hell, male and female, and during the Cold War, East and West. We are told we are bisected human beings who must choose sides and wait for another to fulfill what we lack. Tommy is telling Hedwig, she's already complete even w/o him.
She is already complete without him, we are all complete without finding someone else we are just told to find another, then when it dont work out, we get divorced, where are you from, it cant be America, if you are, you are rare, a rare human being...
@priorzola Tommy's also addressing the ideas that Hedwig puts forth in "Origin of Love," which deals with the same thing. Hedwig's been searching for his other half, but Tommy shows him how Hedwig really can be whole on his (her) own
@gosnia, and the melding of the two-halved tattoo into one at the end shows this as well. In the end, Hedwig is left naked against the world on his/her own as we all truly are. Which, to me, makes it a happy ending. We are alone but stonger in that knowledge that we don't NEED anybody but ourselves to survive. Family, friends and lovers are the support we build for ourselves to come to that realization.
@priorzola You sumed it up pretty well ! And strangely, knowing that there are "no cosmic lovers pre-designed" , really makes you feel so much luckier to be in love ...
so sad he clearly loves Hedwig but he knows that they can never be together now with all they've been through. I love this song by him and it is perfect to sum up the whole relationship between him and Hedwig.
it just annoys me that, whenever i have to explain the plot to someone who's unfamiliar with it, i can never do it justice... "um, its about this guy, he gets a sex change....then his husband leaves him so he/she starts a punk band with some korean women....and stuff happens, but its FANTASTIC." any pointers on making it sound more appealing? i want to get people to watch it!
hansel from berlin becomes hedwig in america by way of a (botched) sex change operation, starts band, meets tommy, tommy steals hedwig's songs, "Hedwig performs and we learn how his ultimate desire is to become a whole person by meeting his other half, someone he can bond with in every way.(taken form IMDB) "
It's about self-acceptance and personal identity. Hedwig has a sex change not because he identifies as female, but to be with the man he loves and the botched operation symbolizes that decision. The drag persona is what Hedwig believes he's become, not who he is. As a result, he makes the girl who is in love with him wear male drag. The message is realized hearing Tommy singing the song he stole from Hedwig. He strips off the drag and accepts himself and allows the girl to embrace her identity.
You do realize that Hedwig didn't "allow the girl to embrace her identity". The "girl" was a man who loved drag, the scene in which he takes the ENTIRE poster for the Rent audition should have shown this, it required males who were fine with drag... Hedwig was allowing him to go on a path separate from the angry inch.
actually according to the story ( and i used to think what you thought), it turns out it started as a girl in drag then became a boy, but who then became a girl.
Not only are the story-line great, but the songs both cuts and goes deep as well. So funny and tragic. A movie beautiful rolled up into a balloon, and let loose to follow the wind.
It's the guy who wrote all the songs singing, not Michael Pitt. I can't remember his name right now, but it's the guitarist/keyboardist for the band in the movie.
No, semenj is right. It's Stephen Trask singing here. According to the DVD, Stephen Trask did all of Michael Pitt's vocals. It says so in the credits and in the director's commentary. They do a good job of making it look/sound like Michael Pitt is singing, but it's definitely Stephen Trask.
Question: according to Wikipedia, Tommy in this song is countering Hedwig's notion that we have a preordained soulmate, and saying that Hedwig should move on, so is that a correct interpretation? Does this song mean that Tommy is giving Hedwig the boot as far as pursuing a relationship together?
Michael Pitt is no relation to Brad. Brad was born and raised in Oklahoma. Michael is a native of New Jersey. Brad has 5 brothers while Michael Pitt has 2 sisters and 1 brother.
EPIC !!

Michael Pitt was great as Tommy Gnosis, and even better as Blake/Kurt Cobain in Last Days.

I really like both versions, trasks voice and pronunciation gives it a bit of a different impact. Angsty in and of itself.

Stephen Trask sings all of Tommy Gnosis' songs, so says John Cameron Mitchell on the commentary for the movie, Stephen Trask also plays Skszp.

Is this Michael Pitt really singing or another person?
disposable090 3 years ago
It's the guy who wrote all the songs singing, not Michael Pitt. I can't remember his name right now, but it's the guitarist/keyboardist for the band in the movie.

no,i think it is michael pitt singing...
wayne0626 3 years ago
No, semenj is right. It's Stephen Trask singing here. According to the DVD, Stephen Trask did all of Michael Pitt's vocals. It says so in the credits and in the director's commentary. They do a good job of making it look/sound like Michael Pitt is singing, but it's definitely Stephen Trask.

Question: according to Wikipedia, Tommy in this song is countering Hedwig's notion that we have a preordained soulmate, and saying that Hedwig should move on, so is that a correct interpretation? Does this song mean that Tommy is giving Hedwig the boot as far as pursuing a relationship together?

so why did he put that cross on his forehead?

This is great, but why does your copy have Chinese subtitles on the bottom? Would it be possible to get one with the English lyrics on it instead?
