I think Marco has this idea and is right about it: when you have done wrong, all you can really do is apologize for the bad conduct and it's then totally out of your hands whether the apology is accepted or not. When you apologize, you are saying your conduct was wrong and you will not repeat it.

People may need some time though to see that the behavior has changed before they will accept an apology.
