Newer games have more storage space, so they figure they ought to make everything bigger. People also complain when things are "too short". Goes to prove the adage that you can't please everybody.
what are you talking about? the dungeons in the original FF each took at least 3 hours if you didn't die and made it through in one try. Not saying it's cool, just saying it's not a new thing
I guess the game designers wanted the longer dungeons to mimic real life. By making them longer, it makes it seem like you are actually going through the dungeon. That's my theory at least.
I blame The Elder Scrolls series for the whole taking a eternity to get from Point A to Point B, more specificity Morrowind since unlike TES 2: Daggerfall and TES 4: Oblivion they didn't have a real system to make traveling long distance easy or shorter. Oh you need to get to the Dunmer Camp in the northern Ashlands? well start walking for the next 35 minutes and hope you don't make a wrong turn or get lost. Of course alot of the Ultima's weren't much better but still.
After all of the 5-6 hour Warcraft raids I've been in (never again)..yeah, I'm not happy either about single player RPGs turning dungeons into multiple hour grind fests.
Though, so long as there's enough save points that you don't have to do it all at once, that's ok, but I would hope a very long dungeon would have lots of awesome treasures/plot significance/character development and not just be a way of padding out the game.
On HC's 'lengthy dungeons' titbit - am I the only one who put FFXII away forever after going through soo many floors at Pharo's Tower [as you never knew whether you were any closer to actual progress]?
Damn that game...
Thankfully, XIII, whilst also guilty of this, actually had interesting characters, plot and battle system to compensate. Not that I'm going back to the FF series anytime soon, but still, XII was abysmal.
I have noticed that dungeons in most current RPGs have gotten quite long (FF12 & 13 are big culprits of this). You could a lot more done with less space, just like in the older games. Dungeons could be smaller and still epic!
@BygPhattyPlus 12 i would admite had big dounges but you would also just run from every battel and youd be done in 5 min but i dont find the areas in 13 that long at all, besides would you pay 60$ Lufia now adays??
@BygPhattyPlus LOL ok but most people wouldnt, id play Lufia on Emulator but id never pay that much maybe $15 of course even new games i wait till they come down in price casue im cheap.
Well, HC, you did miss ten years of gaming when you did the Magic the Gathering tours, so I'd say the addition of scope in RPGs (which, mind you, I enjoy quite a bit) happened while you weren't playing. Man, everything happens when you're not looking, huh?
@HCBailey I think some guy just said, "hey let's make future RPG's longer to beat so the buyer wil get hooked!" And I guess its been working, maybe if future RPG's were like the past ones people would beat them in days instead of months but it depends on alot of stuff.
Lost Odyssey has quite short dungeons, about 15-20 minutes. It feels more Final Fantasy than FF13.
BTW. How long videos are you gonna do with FF13? As those areas are quite long to actually do something and they have new monsters so battles are oing to take a some time.
I can kinda see where they are coming from with the looong battle exploration. If you were a modeler who spent a week of your life making the model for a creature that shows up in one dungeon. You are prolly thinking "These damn players better get a good look at my work!"
I can kinda see where they are coming from with the looong battle exploration. If you were a modeler who spent a week of your life making the model for a creature that shows up in one dungeon. You are prolly thinking "These damn players better get a good look at my work!"
I didn't think the key would be that easy to get,in rpgs I always think "this is way to easy"and expect an ambush, but when I think everythings fine..then something goes wrong -_-
Once you get to heroics in wow you're prolly not gonna like em. Even with an experienced group they take over an hour and a half. I personally like that feeling of working towards a goal like that. Its really. . .heroic.
I'm playing Tales of Vesperia right now (yeah i know it came out on 2008) for the xbox 360 and the game is amazing, I would dare to say is the best jrpg for the next generation, areas are very well proportioned.
I know what you mean HC Bailly. I hate playing those games where it takes forever to get past certain parts. I remember playing a certain game where it took me like 3 hours just to get past a certain boss fight.
Well Golden Sun Dark Dawn just came out, and the dungeons take like half an hour to an hour, depending on how long it takes to figure out the puzzles. I'd suggest buying it :P
yeah, what you say about jrpgs is true. especially when they have random encounters, but there are still light jrpgs, im currently playing ARC RISE FANTASIA for the wii and its very well balanced, you can play it kinda hardore or you can play it easy, pretty good rpg there

yeah i know how HC feels i felt the same way when they took the world map out of ff10 then I stopped seeing games with world maps -.-. guess rpgs are finally going for realism now lol. Which makes me think HCBailly you like exploration and you have a next gen console now, have you considered playing fallout 3 or new vegas. I just got 3 and I've seen other people complain that the amount of stuff to do in one place is more than some games but yet the main quest is faster.
I think the objects that look like trees are actually support pillars to prevent cave-ins. I don't mind playing through dungeons that take a little longer. I guess it's from my time playing WoW. The length of time in a dungeon depends on several factors, I think. The skill level of the player(s), the amount of time spent looking for every single item, or even if you want to grind out a few levels (most likely near the entrance or near a save point).
Another great vid, HC. I look forward to seeing what happens next. I wish I had a more interesting comment to say, but oh well. Keep up the brilliant work, all the same. :)
Ah, Murphy's Law...that's why you never see your team score. It's like if I don't watch the Vancouver Cannucks, they actually do well. If I do, they get clobbered (as usual). XP
I think the public have perhaps wanted longer and more complicated dungeons and larger game settings, or something more 'realistic', because in reality it might take weeks or months to travel great distances, like across whole continents or countries.
What does the fly ring do? More damage to flying enemies?
I don't know what RPGs your playing that make you think that(other than Star ocean), but you should maybe play Persona 3(fes or portable) or 4, the only thing that takes long in those games are bosses, dongeons don't take that long, only depends how fast you can go throgh 9 to 12 floor dongeons. XD
@kongk4 i can understand star ocean for nstance the first time u fight the mimic guys or the giant bug on ur 2nd trip to aeos o gawd i reset my game then my dad kicked ass when he figured out how to do the special attack combos with rush... i was pissed
all the trees there were part of a forest which grew over the swamp and then the cave grew over them, dont look at me that way <_<
I dont understand the takes forever complaint, do you want to spend $60+ on something that will be over in 10-20 hours? and thats if you playing slowly mind you
@HCBailly I think a worse trend thats starting in JRPGs is the games that have absolutely no real plot to them. The one I'm angry at now is called Alterier Rorona which the entire story is you doing fetch quests for your shop. I couldn't even get past about 10 minutes of gameplay because what would be the point there wouldnt be any rewards for playing it.
@belgariontheking1 You're probably like most streeotypical current gamers that have patience problems with JRPGS then because I actually prefer longer games. lol
@ShaowNecroX101 actually your wrong, because after I've played every Final Fantasy except for 14 because why would I want to. No my complaint if you were literate enough to read my comment was that the game in its entirity is nothing but a giant fetch quest for items for your shop. And I hate fetch quests as sidequests, but having them both the main quest and the side quests being nothing but go into dungeon A and get 5 flowers and come back. That is not a game I want to play.
@belgariontheking1 I'm pretty sure I'm literate enough to know that's what patience problems is based on your story. You just sat there critizing and gave up. You think fetch quests suck? You probably haven't played Chrono Trigger, Persona 3, or even Oracle of Ages to notice that, did ya?
HCBailey they probaly do that so you would say oh the world is huge or someting because old games were to small but they don't put any small towns inbetween
the evolution of JRPGs have made them into All Show with No Go (in other words, they spend more on Graphics than they do on Dungeon Design / Plot nowadays.
tell the long dungeons things to Arcanum if you're playing as a mage and don't have fatigue restoring potions. You have to wait 10 minutes for it to restore or go back outside. It's annoying! It takes hours to do anything in big dungeons.
HCBailly, Use your uh..football disadvantage..to your benefit. Root for the team that opposes the Bears and watch the game. That way the Bears will just facestomp the team you "rooted" for. Maybe..Worth a shot haha.
What quarter was it? As the eagles showed against the Giants last week, and the Titans in November, a 10 point lead is nothing, regardless of whether or not it's a happy ending.
HCBailly, how long do you expect this LP to be? I believe you said this game was somewhat shorter than Final Fantasy IX for example, so will there be only 60 episodes or something like that?
Also, as a Bears Fan myself, after hearing you story I'd like to request that you don't watch the Bears playoff games :D
Haa, FF1 reference at the end. Good stuff! Also I really like seeing a new video from you nearly every day, and your little way of saying things makes me laugh too (those things will kiiilll yoooou).
It is weird that they would call the antidote spell "Poison" but come to think of it, didn't they name the antidote spell "Poisona" in another game? I don't remember if it's in dragon warrior 4 or in Final fantasy 6...
You've said your complaints about games like Oblivion, or Fallout, but games like that give credit to your "exploration" by means of: if you find "X" place, you can then fast-travel there without it taking a real-time hour to walk there. Even FFXII has a fast-travel, but the developers would like for the journey to happen rather than skip what they've done altogether.
Personally I like a bit of length in the games that I play, that way I know I am getting my money's worth and like Freedomanganime2 is stating, the actual expansion and length of dungeons/areas is kind of a way to emphasize the depth and grandness of the journey you're undertaking as the protagonist(s).
Not that I disagree with you HC because shorter games like this is also nice and I like playing them too just as much as the longer ones. It's all up to personal preference. : D
I understand that most rpgs now a days have really long dungeons but they really are to emphasizes the grandness of the area and the depth of the journey you are going on. Take a game like Persona 4, you go into the dungeon and when your run out of sp or money you have to leave because the enemies will kill you, that and you can come back at ay time. food for thought.
As people said.. these things are probably (ugly) tree roots...
On the discussion on the newer games: What does take more effort? Making 10 dungeons lasting 30min, or 30 dungeons lasting 10min? Programmers get lazy as well... and newer games usually just take much longer than old ones. Not saying it's a good thing but on the other hand having a game made of 1000 tiny quests might be as annoying (or having a game only lasting 10h)
But yeah, maybe a few nice short games like this would be nice
HC, if someone were to ask you when you were going to do your tax returns for example, would you say to them "Soon enough, soon enough"? :P Just curious as to whether your mannerisms carry on to real life, either intentionally or unintentionally :D
I accidentally traveled to the wrong place while backtracking through the desert and ended up near the Lost Forest, and had big arrows shooting up my ass.

I remember feeling the same way about the dungeons, just after I got Fang in that really long ship in FF13. I thought it would never end.

I love hearing personal stories during LPs haha

I hate this game =[ It's like a cross between pokémon and golden sun gone wrong. I can't wait 'til FFXIII though

Haa, FF1 reference at the end. Good stuff! Also I really like seeing a new video from you nearly every day, and your little way of saying things makes me laugh too (those things will kiiilll yoooou).

I know how you feel about the dungeons... If that's the case, you shouldn't play Demon's Souls...

It is weird that they would call the antidote spell "Poison" but come to think of it, didn't they name the antidote spell "Poisona" in another game? I don't remember if it's in dragon warrior 4 or in Final fantasy 6...
I mean, if they shorten "Bronze" why not Poisona?

Well, you guys may have beat the Jets, but thanks to another team's incompetence, we're still in the playoffs. ^_^

final fanatasy had very long levels ending with very difficult bosses (curse you barthanderus)

Are you going to have like, 30 minute episodes for FF13?
MegaMrPieman 1 year ago

I think those things poking out of the walls are tree roots. They can go /really/ far underground, at least the big long center root anyway.

I accidentally traveled to the wrong place while backtracking through the desert and ended up near the Lost Forest, and had big arrows shooting up my ass.
It was literally "WOW, look at that damage!"
