  • Does this song speak really about Janis Joplin? Because i remember he denied...

  • that's all, I don't even think of you that often </3

  • Cohen is the fucking truth pure genius !

  • This record grabs me by the throat. Chelsea Hotel is a quite hopeless song that I really shouldn't play too many times, else I grow a deeply inconsolable man...

My favourite word is "that": the penultimate word in "That's all, I don't even think of you that often." Every time I hear this half-muttered line it catches me, as if someone drags me backwards. Incredible how a person can touch you so much, yet you pretend the romance/encounter to be insignificant. It's the "that" which dignifies it.

  • Always cry when i hear this song.. Such a beautiful song, with such power and feeling.

  • @MeowCuteCat This song is very powerful but if you love it please checkout another favorite of mine San Diego Serenade by Tom Waits it gets me every time . Tom and Leonard are the fucking best these songs are the soundtrack of my life.

  • This song is amazing. Definitely my favorite Leonard Cohen. He has a new album coming out on January 31 called Old Ideas, and I'm really looking forward to getting it. He's amazing....seriously a legend.

  • DoDolab I have no idea what your talking about, Everyone has am opion, get over yourself already

  • What's with all the prudish comments here? Has anyone ever listened to "Walk on the Wild Side Lyrics" by Lou Reed? Sheesh ! Cohen uses the words "giving head on an unmade bed" to make the point that this is about a seedy affair. It's about people using eachother. Have you ever heard him talk about the song? No I thought not.

Beautiful, raw, honest song. If you don't like it, listen to Cliff Richard instead ! FFS

  • Was Janis more than a drug addled sex object? Of course she was, but this song is about capturing a moment. At the time this song is discussing, Janis and Leonard were everything this song describes. He doesn't paint himself in the best light either.

  • Actually it's embarrasing to listen too and I'm am no prude

  • Anyone know why my comment was removed 3 weeks ago?

  • Stupenda. Una delle mie preferite del cantautore che con Simon più sento vicino. Oltre a Guccini, De André e Battiato. Ben chiaro.

  • the tune reminds me of some other song that i think goes like, "so i spend all my time..." but i'm not sure. oh! it was "i'll have to say i love you in a song" by jim croce.

  • Amazingly beautiful

  • I resent Cohen's implication that he's NOT a handsome man...

  • One of the most soulful songs ever written...hauntingly beautiful

  • @TheDobalob That's rediculous! There was nothing beautiful, tasteful, classy or poetically beauty. Sorry folks I just don't see it. But that is what makes the world go round. Take care all

  • @mamabon1075 Learn to spell. The word is spelled "ridiculous", which is what you are.

  • @mamabon1075 Haha nice to know there's such perfect people around who can't consider other peoples' opinions and have never made a so much as a typo in their entire lives. It puzzles me why you would listen to a video on youtube just to slag the song off. I wonder do you book tickets to concerts you don't like just so you can boo? Seems like you must live a very fulfilling life sir/madam.

  • wasn't this written about Janis Joplin and their affair?

  • @tonlo92 Yes it was and it was no classy at all...very egomatic

  • @tonlo92 Yes

  • Such a touching tribute, yet so distant and dispassionate at the end of the song. Completely changes the tone of the song without changing the sound in any way.

More proof that Leonard Cohen is the greatest Canadian musician of all time.

  • @JimmySteller Yeah, I guess but why did he have to talk about her giving him head? That was classless. I have mixed feelings about the song.

  • @mamabon1075

I'm not sure about that... I don't really think about it when I'm listening to the song.

And to be fair, Leonard Cohen felt really guilty about people finding out it was Joplin he was singing about.

  • @JimmySteller That's a cop out. If he truly felt bad he wouldn't have written it that way to begin with. He showed his true character, which in my book is nothing to write home about

  • @mamabon1075

It were the sixties, who cares?

  • @jensk94 True, the Rolling Stones were singing about handjobs,,,,,,,,,,I just feel Janice was more than a sex object or junkie. That's all backround to her incredible talents

  • @jensk94 Well.... I guess I do...........lol

  • @mamabon1075 Giving head (or the acknowledgement of its existence) is classless? How desperately depressing that statement is.

  • @mamabon1075 I absolutely did not say that. Giving, getting is all great! I just thought it was tasteless in the song.

  • @JimmySteller Neil Young, way way way musically talented. Look how many times he re-evented himself and was successful each time and still going strong. Leonard does not even hold a candle to him

  • @mamabon1075 sorry but in terms of song writing, neil doesn't come close to leonard

I love neil, but you clearly have no idea what you're talking about

poetry and rocking out are 2 completely different things

  • @DavidRocco33 Talking, no, singing about giving head is poetry? Ha! You are blinded by your own sexual thoughts

  • @mamabon1075 Anything, if expressed beautifully, can be poetry. Have you not read the work of the libertines? Check out Aphra Behn's poem On Desire.

  • @JimmySteller I think it was distasteful with his choice of words.....just disgusting! And I'm no prude but you don't need to put oral sex in a song with details for it to be a good song. I don't get what everyone sees in it. But that's what makes the world go round I guess ha ha

  • "We are ugly, but we have the music."

This is one of my favorite lines in music. Ever.

  • @iOpposum me too man..

  • @iOpposum i'm getting it tattooed on me

  • @HikariRAWR Gettting what tatooed?

  • @mamabon1075 "we are ugly, but we have the music"

  • @iOpposum Mine too

  • WOW!

  • @wholicrap

    wow indeed...

  • this song was wrote in memory of janis joplin

  • @music666lover And giving head is all he could come up with? Give me a break...it belongs in the gutter. These days he'd be sued!!

  • @mamabon1075 Don't be stupid.
