I do also have a fade memory on something regarding diesel engines that was called "Henschel Lagonda Verfahren" in Germany. As far as I remember it was a separate kind of little combustion chamber on each cylinder that could be opened and closed via a bolt from the outside of the engine by hand, depending whether the engine was cold or hot.
