It seems as if a lot of the performers who are trying to fill the shoes (or voices) of past greats have a process of evolution themselves... eventually over time they get closer to the original, such as Bill seems to have done with Jim's Rowlf.
i dont mind the new voices but i miss rowlfs jokes, "the muppets 2011" is the first movie that rowlf has any dialogue in. He has always been my favourite muppet. I want to hear more of him and his classic jokes. I remember watching old black and white skits of him on the jimmy dean show and always loved his jokes when he played the dr. in the muppet show skits. More Rowlf please Disney. ah maybe i should just buy the muppet show dvds and not hold my breath for new material.
I noticed that ever since The Muppets(2011) was filmed, Bill's Rowlf has lost the growl, making it sound more like Jim's. But he still has the growl with Dr. Teeth. I wonder why that is? Don't get me wrong, I like Bill's Dr. Teeth, but I wish he'd lose the growl.
@superfly299 Jim couldn't disguise his voice very well. If you listen to his speaking voice it's nearly identical to Kermit's. So basically, Jim's speaking voice can be heard in the back of pretty much every single character he performed. It can be pretty tricky to perfectly match someone's speaking voice. Its a lot easier when the voice is characterized.
@muppetlover16 He became a major part of Avenue Q, creating the puppets and playing a couple of the characters. He played Nicky, Trekkie, & Bear. So you can hear a bit of his Kermit/Ernie in the play.
I really can't hear any similarity between Jim's and Bill's version of Rowlf's voice though. I find them completely different. People must hear some voices different to how others hear it.
Rowlf's recasting has been as perfect as one can be, right? Although the voice is slightly different, Bill keeps in touch with the personality that's already been established with the character.
@NaiTaiDai Oh yeah. They couldn't have chosen a better performer than Bill. He's a GREAT puppeteer! And so great at matching the characters voices and personalities!
I think he rushes his words a bit. Rowlf still doesn't sound right but hopefully in time he will.

Bill's seems much clearer. I think it's just as deep as Jim's was, but the dog lost his bark in the transition.

Rowlf's is one of my all time favorite Muppets. He's just so chill, but filled with puns.

Like the way Rizzo says to Bill's Rowlf "Get back on the horse." : D

Rowlf is a real "Crispin's Crispian", which is a story about a dog who belonged to himself.

You know, I find it hard to pinpoint what makes Rowlf so awesome, other than he's just a really nice guy... er, dog. And a killer piano player.

@MiamoSilver
Bill sounds like Rowlf now, in the clips from the new Muppets Movie though.

Where'd you get a high-quality & high-audio version of the Muppet Show Live when the version on YT is kinda choppy & scrambled audio?

What's up with this rubbery quality that Jim Henson gave a lot of his characters that no one has been able to match?
