The D50 is a pretty sounding synth for all those etheral type pads. But my DX7 MK2 will eat it for breakfast for punch and gutsy sounds out of the future. It will out pad it too in the right hands. Because there is no cheating like the D50 using samples. You have to go into the EGR and EGL parameters and pull the killer sounds out of it. I have done just that. TIME TRAVELLER in frebruary will surprise more that a few ears.
Jump by Van Halen was done with an Oberheim, however the patch to use is Guitarre (I forget the name exactly) and fade out the PCM partial. This patch was also souped up by Jarre as a lead tone.
Neat vid, takes me back. You know I've had both a d-50 and sy-77 and there were reasons why I let both go long ago? Um, have you ever considered getting into propellerheads reason software? If you absolutely demand a hardware synth that is retro, the one synth that was always so hard for me to let go of, was the Ts-12 by ensoniq. What you can do with that board sound wise (and yes it has a cool sequencer also) is absolutely amazing. But bro, REASON on any semi-modern computer!!!
Staccato Heaven reminds me of some 90s Mega Man games and if I am not completely wrong, the Deutsche Bahn took advantage of this instrument patch for announcements in Regional Trains. Also, it is similar to some Korg M-1 sounds which were Asian-minded. :)
@josesillo0789 Umm.. I think there's some "Staccato Heaven" in that song but the other patches must be custom jobs done by Factory Sound Studio in Italy ;)
That "Fantasia" patch sounds like something that would come from an FM synth...actually it's very similar to a sound I've wanted to get my Yamaha SY77 to make, but I stink at programming lol.
@thefonz003 You know, I'm seriously considering selling/trading my D-50 for an SY77. I really, really miss the SQ-80's sequencer and the SY77 has a very nice sequencer from what I've read. Making songs on the D-50 is a pain in the butt with my equipment. What are your thoughts on the SY-77?
@derekaggs11 Hmmm...well, it's the only true synthesizer I've ever owned, unless you count my Wurlitzer 300 Funmaker Super Sprite, so as far as comparisons go, I can't really make any. I've found the sequencer kind of a pain to use because you have to play the drum part yourself, and then build on top of that. I'm kinda lazy. As far as sounds go, it's very versatile and there are a bunch of floppy disk collections available online that have some good sounds.
@derekaggs11 (cont'd) From what I understand, it's kinda like a DX7 mk. II (stereo sound, 6-op FM) plus about 115 sampled sounds (including some like cup, bottle, etc., that sound cool combined with the FM). Voices can consist of either FM or AWM (the samples), or both. A voice can have one, two, or four "elements." The maximum polyphony is 16 FM and 16 AWM. I've heard some good, complex (sometimes evolving) sounds from it. It can play DX7 patches.
@derekaggs11 I have the SY77 myself. The FM/sample engine is really flexible and D-50-like if you know how to exploit it. The on-board samples are kinda blah, though, you'd have to get an external card for better ones. The onboard effects, save for delays and the ensemble chorus, aren't that good compared to the D-50, and the 77's sequencer is hard to use, IMO. I'd keep the D-50 myself. If you got the -77, look for expansion cards to give you better waveforms.
Bravo, Great demo. No speil, no damn piano sounds like other demo's. Well done. I have owned 3 of these beasts over the years, and I'm not selling the one I've got now. Still reasonably cheap, grab one while you still can. People still use them live. LOL .
I did the same mistake. I replaced my ESQ-1 for a Roland D-50. The D-50 is the best digital synth but i miss my esq-1. I'd love to have an SQ-80. BTW i have 14 cards for the roland D-50 :)
@Dubwise4u I wouldn't call it a mistake. While my SQ-80 was great for warm, fuzzy analog sounds, I had a hard time making more complex sounds with it. A big complaint was the clackety keyboard. The ESQ-1s have a much more pleasant keyboard.
@Dubwise4u HI . my name is Gary and I have a D50 and I am looking for sounds, if you can mail me for INFO to garyshirinian@gmail.con please I'd like to know the sounds you
have and how to load each patch on it's own. thanks .

Yamaha Motif has a preset called "Heavenly" and it sounds like as they have sampled "Staccato Heaven".

Around 00:46, that "Orinoco Flow" sound, I'm pretty sure that same exact instrument sound was used in the score for "Ghostbusters II".

@derekaggs11 Also, many of the SY77's presets are uninspiring; from what I've read, the D50's are killer.
