One of my absolute favorite animation pieces from the show. Great music, illustrations, and overall feeling. What could they possibly replce this with!?!?!
Man, for the last few weeks, I kept hearing the music from this clip in my head, but I couldn't for the life of me remember which clip it was … "X X X X". Great stuff.
Now I remember this - definitely 1970's (if not 1969)! Guitar and flute music was good, but I wonder if the theme of this patterns after other clips such as
'Psychedelic Alphabet' and 'Psychedelic Countdown,' or vice versa. Just a thought.
Thank you SO much for posting this. I have been looking for this clip forever. This melancholy little song and the "X" floating in the vastness of space has been haunting me over the years and I thought I would never see it again. I loved this as a child in the mid seventies and it brought back such a rush of memories to hear it now, thirty three years later. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ...
Jonny, thank you so much for putting this up. I was going nuts looking for this. Everytime I think of my childhood I play the music in my head because it had such an impact on me.
Cool! i was born in 1978 i remember seeing this when i around 4 my older brother told me this is from the 1970's clip.i guess X doesn't almost mean a bad thing. all it takes is soothing music and cool graphics..lol!
Just a shot in the dark, but I think this video's purpose is to "soften" the image of what is probably the letter with most negative connotations in our alphabet (x- rated, ex- wife, x for poison or danger, etc.)
Good point...so much symboilsm associated with X in our culture makes it look like the "bad letter". (X also marks answers wrong in school, and crosses out things that are unwanted or forbidden.) Seeing the letter in a more peaceful, neutral setting is a step in the right direction...though I'd love to see Sesame Street's treatment of "X for a kiss" sometime!
I think the artwork and music in this one are pretty cool; it was a terrible shame when they replaced the sound (music *and* speaker identifying the X!) in the 90s.
I'm glad you mentioned that because I do remember seeing this again with the sound and msuic being replaced. I didn't mention it because I didn't know if anyone else would have believed me or not but I'm glad you did.
oh dangit, I keep reposting my old clips after someone else has already beaten me to it... well I guess 2 years was long enough for me to get around to it :P

When I stumbled upon a railroad crossing in Canada and saw the red & white X sign, it reminded me of this segment.

Could be.

All it really takes to re-play the beautiful music is possibly a guitar and flute. Figure someone may do that someday

X is good for marking the spot, or crossing out bad things.

This type of X looks like the X's on the RR crossing gates.

Aha! I was wondering if this X clip was ever going to see the light of day again! Thanks jonnytbirdzback!
It doesn't seem quite as creepy to me now as it did when I was little.
