Hey there is something that I don't understand at all... Mars South Pole is covered with ice, why don't we send probes there? Even if it will be more difficult for the solar panels to get sun light there, just a little glance to that ice outside Earth would be worth a short mission... In addition, any remaining lifeformsfrom Mars could be there.
Humans 20,000 BCE: "Let's shelter ourselves from the rain using these rocks and sand."
Humans 2000 CE: "Let's assemble these rocks (metal) and sand (silicon) into a tool (rover) and use this water (rocket fuel) and more rocks (metal rocket chassis) to send the tool to that red dot in the sky. The rock and sand tool will move by the power of light and we will remotely control the tool from this very spot by making our own invisible light (x-band radiowaves)."
These rovers are a testament to the JPL. Mariner, Viking, Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, MER...Where ground breaking space exploration is being made, the people at JPL are usually the one's making it.

One thing which strikes me the wrong way, isn't this bad PR. You build something you had no clue on how long it was going to last, no clue about the right design. So, NASA builds something which they hope will get the job done, but with no expectation. So you have no goddamn idea to what you're doing, because that is what I'm getting from this video. By the way, stop saying "she", it's a machine, whether you believe it, or not.
@Ryuuken24 You're interpreting this the wrong way. Spirit did what it was supposed to do, succeeding in its original mission after 90 days. Then it went on to surpass all expectations for another five years, exploring the surface of a planet that is not very forgiving in its environment. As technology advanced here on Earth, Spirit continued along as engineers here pushed the limits of what it was intended to do, and in the process learned how to get the most from it. Or her, if you will. ;)
add one more vote to the like collum. spirit lasted for 7 years more than anyone hoped. when humans or aliens come upon it centuries from now, they will say damn, now thats some fine engineering.
@onefugowie I found it on NASA's official website about the rovers. Basically they don't believe it survived the harsh Martian Winter, and every time they contact it, the message goes through, but Spirit doesn't respond back.
How come they dont put color cameras or videocams on these things? No one really knows what Mars looks like because all of the pictures are B&W and colored in by artists. Cameras are so compact these days, im surprised they cant put a HD video cam on one. It would be nice to see its true colors.
@abadubie im 15 years old, just to let you kno and i completley agree on what you just said, whats the point killing each other anyways?,why so much hate when we could work together and fund projects like this ,and maybe one day we will find loads of earth like planets ,we could colinize other planets. we could do alot if we didnt use money etccan some one tell me why we are so stupid as a race ? are we trying to get ourselfs extinct. we might have ww3 if where not careful.
@Bluenoser613 if earth gets hit by another planet size meteor, it will shave the earth surface exposing the beneath core. Traces of past life will be wiped off..
I did a presentation about this robot ! He was fantastic ! It was very interesting to study it.
Good video ;-)

This is a complete and utter waste of time and money. We should be funding more wars and giving more foreign aid to Israel.

I got to visit JPL during their recent open house and see the mock rovers operating. It was quite an experience to see what the team is building.

I wonder if some day Earth will be like Mars is today and a little rover will be running around looking for traces of past life.
Bluenoser613 9 months ago 36
@Bluenoser613 excellent food for thought
psychodelicdragon 9 months ago
@Bluenoser613 No, but Earth will definitely be more like Venus and Mars more like Earth due to sun growth and the system getting hotter.

@Bluenoser613 Nope, only cockroaches and Cher will still be around.
