Essendon needed a finals berth because they hadn't played finals in years. Look up any clubs senior list and compare it to North's, you'll find that in the second half of the season West Coast were fielding younger sides when guys like Ziebell and Tarrant got injured for North. Also Richmond had some very young sides when Cousins and Deledio weren't playing. What's worth noting though is that North finished 9th, West Coast and Richmond were 15th and 16th.
