First heard it in hmm 83? 84? Immense shock. I suddenly saw past, present and future all flowing at the same time along with the melody of that never ending theme. I suddenly understood our unavoidable fate and all the things that were still to come (2 towers?). Cycles. The Zohar. Man in the high castle, the I-ching. Vico's Scienza Nuova. Look around: sooo many shudra drones going nowhere. Bell's theorem: One point. Tiferet, my beauty. Go figure.
Hey Dean did you get Phillip Glass to make this song specifically for you or is it a general composition. I immediately recognized it from koyaanisqatsi
This is an edit that Philip made for us from "The Photographer / Act III," a 19 minute piece that was side two of his "The Photographer" album. He created the music edit first and then we created the imagery to the edited version of Act III.
@SABRENOSE It's not a song. Please don't bring pop music terminology into places where it does not belong. In the future, refer to a piece of serious music as a "piece" or a "work" or a "composition," or by whatever description the composer has chosen (Symphony, concerto, etc.) Calling something like this a "song" is like saying the Mona Lisa is a statue. You sound like a ninny.
@CannonfireVideo I was asking Dean a viable question...your trying to be a professor here. In short you made an empty response for a half year old comment
I saw this on Good Morning Mr Orwell on WNET on New Years day, 1984. Total happy shock and awe! So delighted to discover it here. Thank you for creating, and posting!
Ditto sunspott! I wanted to see this again, and searched and searched, but had to wait about 25 years! Thanks to Dean and youtube for fulfilling a dream. :)
@chikochevere: As we completed ACT III in 1983 if it contains a 9/11 message we certainly didn't put it there. For over 20 years I've lived 3 blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. While i never liked being inside the Trade Center buildings I felt they were beautiful skyline sculptures, which is why they appear in several other pieces we did, e.g., "Big Electric Cat." I still cringe a little when I seem them in these tapes.
I remember this from Good Morning, Mr. Orwell, broadcast 1/1/1984 on WNET, the PBS station in NYC. Fun and used to listen to the recording at full volume. Good times, good times.
Brilliant. We saw Glass' Orphee at Portland Opera last night, and it brought me back to this masterpiece, which introduced me to Philip Glass. It has me transfixed. Thank you!
YVW kc7it! ("Masterpiece" may be a bit strong though :-) If you have the time, check out the Luminare video posted on the Dean358 Channel. In many ways it was the extension of our work on ACT III.
Wow. I have seen that video on french TV in 1983 and recorded on a V2000 tape. It was a shock. ANd the very first time I heard Philip Glass. Since that time his music always take me to New York... I'm so glad to find it on youtube. And even I have found this video inspired me a lot in my 1996 works... But now 26 years later I can watch it and it is still perfect for me. I love it. Thank you for posting it !
Once upon a time I was John Sanborn's slave (NYU film school grad) at the exact time this was being made. I must have heard this song 1,000 times as it was taking shape. I haven't seen nor heard it since those days and it is so amazing to think that you guys were part of that elite group of the best video artists in the WORLD at the very birth of video art as an art. Glad to be a tiny part of it.
Tnx Belinda! Not sure we were the "best in the world" but we certainly amused ourselves creating this stuff. Please see the "More from: Dean358" videos for other work from this period (and a couple of oddball comedy postings, put up for good measure.) -- Dean

@dean358 You said the genius Philip Glass have made an edition for you?
robertopinarizzo 1 year ago
@robertopinarizzo: not an "edition" just a shorter, edited version cut down from the original track.

Philip Glass' The Photographer Act III is simply the masterpiece of vanguard music.

@robertopinarizzo I think you mean avant-garde, but yes it is! Peace.
