@arkkisarkki Yep, I was able to pinpoint some similarities in Opeth's songs. Even Akerfelt stated Camel influenced his style (well, basically he says he likes Camel, it sounds like the same to me) :P. Btw .....I can see another thing....the LENGTH of the tracks xD.
For those discovering Camel, the best two albums are the first two: Camel and Mirage. The others are good or good in parts, but they became less rock and more jazzy and .... well. It wasn't the same. The Snow Goose (3rd album) was the most popular. Breathless is not so hot, although "Summer Lightning" is a stand out track.
I'm amazed that a "video" of an album sleeve has had 35'000 views. There must be something there. This was my favourite album in the 70s. Listened to it again not long ago (I recently rebought it on CD) and still thought it was incredible.
But if the 70s was a sort of golden age for rock, it would be wrong to think that nothing interesting has happened in the last 30 years. Radiohead and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to name but two bands.
Always felt this song was kind of similar to Yes Starship Trooper. Not in melody, but in song structure. The ending portion has kind of a Wurm vibe going on with it.
@markoctavio aqui en merida yuc mex hay un chavo que vende viniles a 100 pesos de coleccion, cree que tiene varios de camel, tambien de santana otra de mis bandas favoritas
@cjgone2 well, they actually are from england, and ther is where the prog rock was popular, but you are right, the music back the and the "music" now are at lightyears of distance speaking of quality.
While I'll admit this song is quite excellent, I have to point out the staunch music similarities to Caravan and The Moody Blues who were also signed to Decca's Deram. I can't help but wonder how much the label infulenced this recording as opposed to Camel's own originality. Despite that, this is a very well-composed and soothing song.
@AQNG58 aahh man, you totally put words in my mouth there!! im afraid that my social group reflects the opposite of what you said- and considering i didnt look too deeply into the matter... maybe i was wrong! oops.. i apologise for not using little faces to accent my totally non passive aggressive tone! perhaps you should stop taking things so literally and responding in an aggressive tone? i dunno its up to you man :) i hope you have a calm and peaceful life
@Amyblueiow Prescient in the fact that although published in the 1950's, LOTR really didn't achieve mainstream, one out of five recognize it, honest to goodness mainstream popularity until Peter Jackson's film at the dawn of the millennium. Stop taking crap too literally in a passive aggressive way, it'll get you laid more. Wanker.
@AQNG58 Peter Jackson's trilogy brought LOTR to this decade's mainstream, but there was other years when Tolkien's works had a great influence, musicians from the 70's used to read books, so they could had more than a 'hint' about culture.
@ 5:43 Wtf? "Once he wore gray \ he fell and slipped away \ from everybodies sight \ the wizard of them all \ came back from his fall \ all dressed in white" Prescient lord of the rings reference? Camel were far ahead of their time...
Dear Thai, I am fully agree with u! 70's rock was beatifull bizarre music from Sabbath to Genesiis, from L.Z. to Yes! How many nice underrated bands from South Africa, Italy, NL, Denmark, Argentine, Japan were those years ! Modern music is a kind of bullshit for 85%, the rest is old bands still carrying their music!
@ntounsi Completely wrong! If you're going to make a comment, get your facts right. Thanks for the posting jahitcObain. Haven't heard this in years. A great example of 70s progressive 'grammar school' rock.
Nimrodel was an Elf Maiden of Lórien in the Third Age.
Nimrodel was the beloved of Amroth, last Silvan Elf lord of Lórien. She lived near the river in a tree-house, and when the Balrog appeared in Moria she fled to join her beloved, who was waiting at Edhellond, to leave from Middle-earth for Valinor. However Nimrodel and her companions were lost in the Ered Nimrais. Among her companions was Mithrellas, a Silvan Elf.
I know that the last part, "The white rider" is a tribute to Gandalf, the thing you say about Nimrodel sounds right to me, and let me know what do you think about "The procesion" part.
Saw Camel opening for Jethro Tull in Long Beach, CA. in 1973. They blew me away. They opened with Lady Fantasy, and followed with this one. Great era for music ! Wish it were so now.....miss the 70's............
Just one more thing I must say--The music of the 70's, like this genre of musci rather (in my mind, at least), is a damn sight better than today's jiphop gangsta' evil racist sexist non-music that passes for something one should listen to. Wrong.
the 70's were about peace man, todays black rappers etc are total racists compared to how blacks and whites were like in the 70's - ofc there was racism back then, but people had potential to get along much better than they do today
my childhood was surrounded with prog and fusion. my father was drummer in finnish fusion band when i was born and he taught me basics. now many years after this all is so clear. camel is one of my favourites and andy is one reason why i started to play guitar. (zappa and di meola also), but mirage is something and snow goose even better. btw sorry my long story.
i cant remeber were i read it but latimer did say this song was based on the Lord of the Rings books and gandalf listen to the lyrics for white rider not a fan of the books but its a brilliant concept for a brilliant band!

That's not really a bad thing for a band when it leads to "Moonmadness". I also wouldn't really describe them as "jazzy" necessarily.
