  • money shot lol. btw ed, how did you get your job?

  • Hey Ed, so do you basically get basses shipped to you and then you send them back after you review them? Do you get to pick what basses you want to review?

  • @HrapovikPlush - Basically yes. And sometimes I get a say in what comes in, sometimes it's a surprise.

  • gotta love spinal tap

  • "plays like BUTTER?" lol

  • Fantastic. Your reviews never fail to amuse and impress!

  • 1:04 made my day

  • look at the flame

    lmao

  • thanks for the advice

  • dude i have a four string and when i saw this video i said wow, i though the song you played was awesome it got suck in my head for days and like every day i watch this video and your other ones to but do you think you could send me toughs tabs so i could play them on my bass thank you

  • I don't have any tabs for this stuff, I make it up as I go along. I suggest you use your ears and figure it out yourself. Think of how satisfying that will be when you do it all by yourself. Go for it.

  • besides, you are playing it on camera so... kmon... we can actually SEE what you do right?

  • you got that bass for free? nice job. haha

  • Well, I sent it back after I reviewed it. It wasn't "for keeps".

  • haha you have a very depressing job. after falling inlove with a bass you have to let it go ahihihi

  • Hello Ed,

Is it too diferent from a regular 5 string plugged into a octaver or similar? Or it's just... a diferent bass?

    Thanks!

  • Most octave pedals give you an octave DOWN, not up. And yes, it's different. Think - 12 string guitar, but down an octave.

  • What an awesome bass. It sounds like you have a guitar and a bass playing at the same time when you get the double strings in there. And God you look like you're having fun. I'll take your job any day.

  • You the man. That's all there is to it.

  • I laughed at the Spinal Tap reference

  • can i have ur job

  • Wow ... sounds like a bass and a guitar playing the same riffs together ... I guess that's part of the idea of the 10 strings huh? Interesting!

  • Wow Ed, you are untouchable on bass.

  • Well, thanks so much for the compliment, but seriously.... have you heard of Victor Wooten? Untouchable? I wouldn't say that, but thanks for your vote of confidence.

  • Well, maybe he is better than you, but either way. You look like you are having so much fun jamming out on these instruments. I mean, you respect the intstruments themselves and you are a VERY skilled bassist. That, my good sir, is admirable.

  • Thanks.

  • i agree, Ed you are a stud

  • GREAT job Ed. I love your playing style and versatility of demonstration. But most of all I love your sense of comedy when review. I know a lot of people just like to show what they like and attack what they hate, but I get a lot when watching your videos. I can't tell you how many times I've now said, "And the money shot...'Ah.'"

Thanks again, and keep up the great stuff.

  • You're most welcome! Thanks for checking out my stuff.

  • Like having a perfectly timed baritone guitardist behind you :D

  • nice, considering getting a dean bass like this, my question is, how fould you play both strings at once if you use fingering, assuming you do?

  • The strings are close together, it's designed to hit both strings at once. It would be hard NOT to.

  • damn man i like your job. lol

  • Very interesting bass. I had never considered using a 10 string but now I am.

I'm starting to feel the GAS! Nooooooo

    Ed you bastard! :D

  • hi Ed !!man !!I think slapping is very cool but its very hard to learn ^^so how long did you practise to manage or finish slapp on a bass that well?(you can answer generally)Anyway great vid like always

  • Well, I've been slapping for about 30 years, but it shouldn't take you that long if you buy my Slap Bass Dvd from Hal Leonard! Check out my website edfriedland(dot)com

  • Hmh...I am sorry but I decided to practise bass and when I *finished*that (in many years^^)then I will try slapping^^...maybe in a few years^^I have to save my money for a new bass or amp sorry!

  • hi ed, whats a good bass string to use?i play rock and funk

  • do u know how to play drums?

  • Yes, badly!

  • lol great spinal tap referance

  • Hey Ed, do you play drums as well? I noticed that kit back there and in your R&B Masters book you included some drum beats with the examples...I know it's important lock in with the drummist, but what in particular should I listen for aside from just "follow the kick"?

  • I've been learning how to play drums for about 2 years. I'm not especially talented, but when the planets are properly aligned, I can keep time. It's done amazing things for my groove. It's made it much more of a physical thing. It's more in my feet now. I started by suggesting that all bass players get drum machines and learn how to program drum beats. I stand by that, but now I think they should all buy a drum set and learn how to play.

  • Now that's really funny. Not "haha" funny, but intriguing. I've actually gone from being a drummer to playing bass. Bassists might be interested in what's called a Darbouka drum. It's an hourglass shaped table drum played mainly with your fingers. If interested search "Rony Barrak" videos. Being used to using all my fingers (and the occasional palm) has really helped me in the transfer from drums over to bass.

  • i guess its cool,but i mean,with me,i dont want a bass that sounds like that....lol

  • Great review. I wonder where/how you'd get strings for that bass.

  • Loved the Nigel Tufnel's "just lissen" !! :D Great bass of course

  • I laughed all the way through this vid! Awesome!

  • You got a nice clear tone from that 8-string at the beginning, there... what are your EQ settings? My 8-string, albeit crappy, tends to just blur in with itself.

  • Dude you should have played tools Schizm on this one.

  • u da shit! and sos ur job! 5 stars

  • Ed seems to be surprised the high strings are on top of the low strings, but isn't this normal practice with such basses? The Hamer 8 and 12 strings have their strings arranged exactly the same! Is this the first time he sees such a bass?

  • Not the first time, but I do remember seeing one that had the high strings below. Frankly, I have never played a bass like that for more than a few seconds. Most of the ones I picked up felt unplayable, but not this one!

  • god, ed, you're masterful on pretty much any given bass, huh?

  • Thanks. Well, I wouldn't exactly call that mastery, but I do try to make music with what ever I have to play at the moment. I'll have some challenges coming up very soon!

  • Cant you make a video of the 4 string godlyke diety?... God... do they sound God-like!

  • Well, to do that, they'd have to send me one... Why don't you give them a call? ;)

  • ahahah, id ask them to send ME one if that was the case ahah

  • @remoman: an octaver pedal would never give you the true 10 string feel... it's a nice effect, but no 10 string bass...

  • pfft.. just get an octaver pedal... instant 10 string. and easier to tune.

  • Not true; using an octave pedal gives you a unique sound (when good) and some nasty artifacts (when bad). Experience would show you this instantly. I own an 8 string and use Octave on 4 strings occasionally.

  • thats nice for a $3350 bass

  • sweet

  • oh my god is right, haha i bet you put that thing through the ropes, looks like it would be a fun instrument to play around with

  • Sweet Ed. Hope that made your Xmas and you had a good one as well !

  • That things sounds a lot more usable than I thought it would. Also, the photos don't do that bass justice. Looks better "in person."
