I always thought the sample on Cashmere Thoughts was just beautiful...but now I've had the pleasure of hearing the original I don't think I'll ever look back, this is exquisite.
This is a tiny example of something beautiful and good getting so far out of context that it becomes something far less valuable than its original intent. Like the Bloods starting out as a community based, group protecting the neighborhood and fighting police brutality becoming a gang. Jay has no message when he takes this music, he has a commercial. How many of our prophets become poster boys? Our best and brightest don't even know what they are capable of. This song matters, Jay's doesn't.
@chromakid Wow...never really thought about it like that! Well said!! Just curious though; do you take exception to sampling in general, or do you just desire a rapper to actually spit something of substance when using such a meaningful sample?
@KwentEss Rappers should deflect some of the shine they get back to their sources. I know it is competitive in the beat game and some beat makers don't like letting their sample sources out there, liner notes aren't enough though. Radio stations can't really do it because they don't want the rights issues. Comment boards are the best places for stuff like this. Its peer to peer music education.
@2020TYBO No way! I knew I recognized that sample. Project Funk The World is one of my most fave albums of all time. Check out "Welcome to 1994" if you can that song is on FIRE!
@mrmoran0077 To tell you the truth J.V.C. Force used this first in "Deja Vu" from their "Force Field" lp in 1990.
But to echo the other user comments,a few seconds of a song used in a sample doesn't give you the whole concept of the whole track. This song is so real. "save the people...save us AAALLLLL!!"
@PhatNationTube seriously what is everyones problem with jay, i hate fake hip hop and i honestly dont see anything wrong with jay, sure blueprint 3 was shod but reasonable doubt and the blueprint are fucking classics, and to say he's shit is just dumb
@PS3xMedia You know what, I was wrong. I don't have a problem with Jay-Z; I have a problem with people quoting Jay-Z lyrics on a Hamilton Bohannon YouTube post. People placing more emphasis on the borrower than on they do on the lender. The vid is titled "Hamilton Bohannon - Save Their Souls, not "Jay-Z - Cashmere Thoughts. Just imagine how you would feel if somebody else got all the attention for something that you created...
@PS3xMedia ... Production and marketing made Jigga popular. Popular rapper with MTV/VH-1 appeal ≠ classic albums. And I didn't even say he was shit. People saying Jay-Z is one of the greatest of all time is annoying. He's okay, but most people you hear saying he's Top 5 caliber ain't even true hip hop heads; They just bandwagon ridin' fair weather fans. So you right, I was wrong. It's not "fuck Jay-Z", it's fuck his male groupies.
What make the track so funky??? HUm let me see...Wah Wah Watson! What up big unc. You killing that ish!!! That's the same cat on Papa was Rolling Stone and Maxwell Acensions!
I'm from Karachi, and when ever I think about this song, it just tears in my eyes. I think about the people who died at the hands of gangs, crooks, corrupt cops and the military. Those poor people just wanted to earn a good living that's all, they didn't wanted to hurt anyone. I got friends over there and somethings I get the thought of them dying. That's why I pray 5 times a day to make sure that every one in that city is safe.
paradox: this is a classic-pfunk caliber ballad (eg Cosmic Slop, Let's Take it to the Stage era)- why did Hambo go on to produce the world's funkiest elevator music exclusively?
before Jay Z sample this the man Lazy Lay sample this joint back in 1989 or 1990. Wow, this tune is sure is funky. More funkier than grandma and auntie and mine own feet.
I never hear this before and i tell you... it is so good... excellent
