they should let you take pictures from google maps on compass then you can tell everyone you went to china for the weekend a great thing to get out of going to work =~D
@PiPerson95 Only on third party applications, like RMaps (which has some maps better than G. of L.). Actually, almost all use of the compass comes from 3d party. Probably the best are GPS status and Rmaps. Both require some effort. If you're too lazy, don't bother. Otherwise, you won't be disappointid. Some more specific tools like ATM finders are great as well (depends on your region).
I don't know what the iPhone or it's applications can do. For the HTC Hero, I know that most (in fact almost all) of what the compass can do, is from 3rd party apps. For you to decide if that's good for HTC itself or not. As for me, I'm just being practical.
@StrongOneX i agree with bluetooth i found that a few days ago when i tryed to send my old photos to this one.
i had to download the app killer aswell but its never gone slow for me after i updated it and changed the layout abit.
The google maps however , well im just waiting on the 2.0 update se i can run the new google nav when it comes out. but i did find the nearest pizza hut,pc world :)
games however dont seem to have any good 3d ones yet, otherwise its the best phone i ever had.
Guys, someone can tell me why the googlemaps app does not have the same function as the iphone the one that uses the compass to rotate the map in the direction u r facing at? i had to download an extra app from the market for that, but it is not as good as google map.
Well it could use a magnetic compass to take out the bearing and use the g-sensors for the rest.
I read somewhere that the HTC Dream (a.k.a. T-Mobile G1) has a magnetic compass and I'm trying to verify if that's correct and weather other Android devices has that as well.
I actually own an HTC Hero now and I do think it has a magnetic compass. If I download a compass software it's capable of pointing out north with pretty good accuracy (provided you're not near an "artificial" magnetic field). A G-sensor alone isn't capable of that and the GPS can only give you your heading while moving.
@anarkistraeven Of course it has. Wanna know more? Visit Eclipsim's site (d o t c o m), and download his appplication (probably by far the best compass on the Hero). Also, look on YouTube for "Best Compass Calibration Method", cos the built-in compass has its flaws.
awesomee.. still waiting till october 11 which i hear it is coming to the u.s. carrier sprint!!! finally a fone i like from sprint. I was feeling a little left out from all my friends that had kool new fones from att!! haha! cant wait and thanks for the video ;)
Is there a stand-alone compass application, which gives some sort of graphical representation of a compass face that can be used to determine magnetic heading? If not in the default applications then from the Android store?
Default apps, almost zero (should make HTC think) In the latter there are several. IMHO the best (by far!) is GPS status, which you should give a little effort to learn how valuable it is. Please visit the author's site to learn more about GPS and digital compasses. Takes some effort, but you won't be disappointed. RMaps is also great: has some very good maps, that can turn to the compass when the option is turned on.
Apparently there's an app called BlueX which lets you send files, but you have to be rooted to receive via BT. Nice surprise video! Very cool compass function!

@worldidolpoland No.

Does it actually sense which direction you are facing? Like if your phone is pointing north will it look northwards on Google Maps?

I've had mine for 4 days now and im very impressed.. BUT i've been disapointed too =(
You can't transfer files with bluetooth.
Google map isn't as cool as the Iphone GPS.
Sometimes the phone crash and you have to restart it, wich takes ages =(
The upload rate is 2mb, Download rate is 7mb.
YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE TASKILL APP... MAKES THE PHONE 300% FASTER BECAUSE IT "KILLS" APPS THAT ARE NOT IN USE.

Is it using the g-sensors or does it have a real magnetic compass?
anarkistraeven 2 years ago
It does have a Digital Compass, although that's probably using the G-sensor - as compasses can't 'do' up and down

From clip's 5:45 mark, excellent Google Maps Compass mode demo
Synchronizing Public Transit Authority BUS STOP data WILL enable hyper modern function:
1) Smartphone point/orientation sensitive 'simple text' bus stop schedule:
Texting "51860" (bus stop number) to "33333" gets reply:
51860 [135] 03:49p 03:59p 04:09p [145] 03:57p 04:12p [144] 04:10p [...]
2) Time+Data+Scheduler --> alarm prompt
This HTC Hero should compete with taxis and Mom's "Skipper! Your Bus will pass soon!".
