The way I feel about this song is wrapped up with the love I have for my amazing, beautiful, funny and fabulous daughter. Holly forever in Edinburgh, love you baby. Thankyou Vonda, you make me cry.
As a native Marylander who has lived in the UK for 15 years, this song always makes me choke up. 'Maryland, I'm coming home...' Perhaps not - but Maryland, my Maryland forever in my heart.
This is awesome... but, I miss the pre-Ally Vonda so much. The original version of this song off It's Good Eve was so much more beautiful. The way she and Micheal originally recorded it was pure magic. This version, with all of this TV crud percussion and fake keyboard BS layered over it doesn't compare. But back in the day, watching Vonda in the Troubador or the Baked Potato, with Michael Landau and all the other awesome musicians she played with... man, those shows were musical magic.
@ibamct I respect that you knew of Ms. Shepard before her career swung under the cameras. I will have to look for the arrangement you cite. Consider, though. Isn't this arrangement just as much hers as the older one? Also, I like a little variety in my work, day in and out. Perhaps having different, and equally strong, arrangements of a personal standard gives a performer that routine-killer.
@Runoffscribe Michael Landau and Vonda Shepard themselves produced the original. Every live clip I've seen is consistent with that version of the song. This version is a remix: a producer overdubbed keys and fake percussion to make it "consistent" for TV, but at the same time drowned out the feeling and dynamics that Lenny Castro and Vinnie Colaiuta brought to the original (if you don't know them, look them up). Still, I was really happy when Ally shot Vonda to the mainstream she deserved.
Who wrote this material? She really owns this song. I'd like to imagine she wrote this. I must say she makes me think of Cheryl Crow .... on steroids!
that was one of my favorite shows ever and i LOVE vonda so much! the meaning of this song to me is that sometimes you just have let certain dreams go and embrace the life that you've got.
I'm not a big fan of Vonda, but this song touches to my very core. And the more i grow older, the more I understand the "Maryland" in people. Great performance by her. 5 stars
She has the most amazing deep, almost african american voice. The first time I heard her I thought of all those amazing black divas, it took me ages to realise she was white. Amazing vocal ability.
I never found it to be a self involved show. It was actually very realistic in terms of it emotional aspects. Many women could relate to Ally Including myself. In the late 90's the love of my life left me and i was very sad and the wound hasnt truly healed after all these years. The show was very beautiful. The songs were magical!
@idontdothatdou I am over the first love of my life. It was in the late 90's and lasted from 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. I met someone else I loved deeply and had a loving relationship from 2003 to 2007. But he also decided to end it and it also made me feel sad. We were going to be friends but he lied to me and broke off the friendship as well. Like Ally, I've had a lot of sad relationships and remain single. Maybe I'll adopt a little girl like Ally does at the end of the series.
I'm originally from Maryland myself, but for my entire adult life I have lived outside of the state for one reason or another. Whenever I go back it always feels good! Long live Maryland!
