I was raised with watching Lucy. Such a class act and talent from stars of yesteryear. Such talent cannot be replaced or duplicated. This is part of our history. I LOVE LUCY.
Ps: I wish her and Vivian Vance did an interview together.
Today is Saturday, August 6, 2011, which is the 100th anniversary of Lucille Désirée Ball's birthday--a EMMY winner and much more.
Born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, N.Y. (a city mentioned a couple times in the 1950s series of "I Love Lucy"), the beloved Lucille Ball was the queen of television comedy most recognized for her role as Lucy Ricardo. As we enjoy these episode clips of her most famed tv show, lets all say, especially today on the 100th birthday anniversary..Happy birthday Lucy!
Lucy deserved all the praise here and much more. She was and always will be the best comedienne that ever lived. I never get tired of watching her work, whether it was on television in shows like I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy or her brilliant work in films like The Long, Long Trailer, The Fuller Brush Girl or Your's Mine And Ours. She was simply the best.
Amazing clip. Lucille Ball won 4 Emmy awards in her career: For Best Actress in a Comedy Series for "I Love Lucy" in 1952 and 1955, and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for "The Lucy Show" in 1967 and 1968.
Lucy was a wonderful friend. This clip brings back great memories; Merv was the nicest of all talk show hosts, from a guest's point of view. Lucy was the greatest comedic actress of the 20th century, in my opinion. Thanks for posting this.
@RuthBuzzi1 , and you are a wonderful comedienne in your own right. I grew up watching you and you always brought me laughter. The skits you did with Arte Johnson are classic! Thanks for commenting here! By the way, as you've responded here about Lucille Ball, do you have any specific memories from when you guest starred on "Here's Lucy"? When you roasted her on Dean Martin's show, you were hysterical!
She really does look quite lovely on her Emmy win. I never really thought that before, but her coloring is amazing. She was very gracious. And I love, love, love that rainbow chiffon number! I could drape my home with that stuff!
It's really cool that, at that relatively advanced stage of her career -- 1967 -- the award still meant so much to Lucy. She was mistake, however, when she said, "Last time I got it, I thought they gave it to me because I'd had a baby". It's true that she won an Emmy in 1952, the year Desi Jr. was born, but then she won it again in 1956.
Thank you for taking the time and post this. Great stuff... to bad this era of TV and Movie personality's are passing away. I am 42, but I fell in love with the golden era of Hollywood and the great stars of that time. My Dad was a pro football player for the Rams in 60's and 70's, and we had lots of famous people as friends, but I always saw them just as friends of the family, but now I have a lot of respect for what they gave us. My 13 and 11 yr olds love old time radio and old movies.
@rachelazw Yes, ma'm, I know that. However, there were many years that passed between wins and I feel that several of the women who were chosen over Lucy were not as deserving as she was. Of course, it would have been wrong to give Lucy an Emmy every year instead of giving others a chance for recognition.
She look's so beautiful and stunning. All the Hollywood actresses and leading ladies of today have nothing on Lucy. She had a style and a classiness that is unmatched.
i am sorry and kind of embarrassed. i always knew there was a "lucy" sitcom out there and that it was a classic, but i never knew how great it is until about 3 months ago. I am sorry i wasn't born earlier and i am embarassed i love comedy so much, and thought some of the ones of nowadays were "classics". after watching "i love lucy" i realise how they all in some level use her as reference. i make the name of this great show my own words.
when I was very young I was determined that when I got the chance to meet Lucille Ball I would. I was 7 years old when she died, I was heartbroken.yet barely old enough to comprehend comedy. Her style gave me the confidence to be who I am no matter who said what about me. I am now studying to be a pastor and my loved ones say that I have a lucy style to the way I express myself that I dont even recognize. the world needs laughter and even in death she still abundantly gives that.
I apologize for my redundancy in my former post. I should also clarify that the award speech I mentioned was the Emmy Award one, although the award presentation within the first minute is also sweet.
Thank you for posting such a lovely, impromptu speech. It is so genuine and moving to see how much the award means to her. She holds such a special place in my heart. Her work is not only transcendant but immortal. There will never be any like her. She worked herself to the nub to please her audience, so much so that her steely professionalism made some of those terrible "Here's Lucy" scripts into enjoyable television. There will never be another like her - but she was all we needed.
I don't know if this is true, but I've heard that there was this moment with Lucy as a presenter at the emmys, and she announced the nominees, but she couldn't find the envelope with the winner! And Milton Berle had to come out and stall for time! And everyone thought it was staged, but it was REAL!If any knows, dish!

Yes, this is true. Someone posted it on Youtube fairly recently. I'm not sure if it's still up, though. But the back story is that Lucy was flustered because, before she came out, someone had made a prank phone call saying her son, Desi Arnaz, Jr., had just died tragically. It was only moments before she came out that she found out it was a prank. But she was obviously still shaken up and, with all the commotion, had left her glasses behind and couldn't see what she was doing.
The official unedited first season of "The Lucy Show" on DVD has FINALLY been announced. Do a search for LucyScroll, or go to this Youtube link for details: watch?v=4-ySG2nZvGk
This clip is of her winning her 3rd Emmy, not 4th; she won the 4th the next year. But few performers have won that many Emmys. And these weren't her only honors from the Television Academy: She was one of the first inductees into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in '84, and won the Governor's Award at the '89 Emmys. Outside of the Emmys, she received the highest award in entertainment in '86, the Kennedy Center Honors; and in '89, the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
She also got seven Golden Globe nominations, including two for her third series, HERE'S LUCY, and won the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 1979 Golden Globes. She won countless other awards, but these are among her most prestigious.
I wonder why none of the Emmy Awards shows are ever shown any more or released on dvd? They are a great time capsule. That looks like Barbara Eden presenting the award.
The announcer on the clip from the 1967 Emmy Show says "I Love Lucy" won 2 Emmys for Best Show in the 50's--and that Lucy won only one Emmy for Best Actress for I Love Lucy, in 1952.
Lucy won twice for "I Love Lucy" and twice for "The Lucy Show," and then won the Governor's Award posthumously in 1989. The announcer MENTIONS only one Emmy win by Ball for "I Love Lucy"; but he doesn't say it's her only win for that show. She won on Feb 5, 1953 as Best Comedienne, and March 17, 1956 as Best Actress. This clip, from June 4, 1967, is her third win (and first for The Lucy Show). Her fourth win was the following year, on May 19, 1968.
Thanks for the reply and for clearing that up. I have many books on Lucy, and thought I had read in one of them that she won 2 Emmys for "I Love Lucy". I'm glad that she did. Although she was good in all of her series', I know that "I Love Lucy" is considered her crown jewel.
She won two Emmys for I LOVE LUCY (in 1953 and 1956) and two for THE LUCY SHOW (in 1967 and 1968). She got a total of 13 Emmy nominations: nine for I LOVE LUCY and four for THE LUCY SHOW. She was also posthumously awarded the Governor's Award at the 1989 Emmys. Among her other prominent award nominations for television, she got three Golden Globe nominations: in 1968 for THE LUCY SHOW, and 1970 and 1972 for HERE'S LUCY. She didn't win any of those, however.
I'm sure she would have won more for I Love Lucy but for the fact that, in the '50s, there were only a handful of Emmy categories. There was a single "best actress" award that encompassed sitcoms, variety shows and dramas. For example, in 1952, Lucy lost to Imogene Coca, who starred on a variety show, not a sitcom. In 1955, she lost to Loretta Young, hostess of a drama anthology series. Twenty years later, there were many more individual categories; thus, a much greater chance of winning one.
Correction: In 1952, she was competing in a category that no longer exists: "Best Comedian or Comedienne" The people nominated for this category were on both sitcoms and variety shows, and were both male and female, and didn't necessarily have a regular series. She lost to Red Skelton. But in his acceptance speech, Skelton graciously said his Emmy should have gone to Lucille Ball.
.and the other presenter was barbara Eden, and Lucy gave her a big break on I Love Lucy, she played the pretty girl that all the boys danced with, and then Lucy, Ethel, and Betty Ramsey got all dolled up. it was halarious, and Lucy told Barbara to HAM IT UP, and picked out her clothing for the show.
wow absolutely AMAZING. I have the enitre series collection of I LOVE LUCY, its gotten me through so many things, I adore this woman and I miss her beyond words can explain, thank you SO much for posting this, it is one of a kind just like Ms Lucille Ball. I LOVE LUCY!<3
Thks for sharing this. Lucy is so sincere in her emotions, we miss her dearly, a wonderful honest woman, beautiful too. It's difficult to see her in a real happy moment, this is a rare treat. It's true there will never be anyone like her.
in fact there is a tribute to Lucille at Orlando Studios in Florida. I don't know if it was a year-round that but I went to it and it was very interesting. All of her fabulous dresses of her and there and a model of the "I Love Lucy" set and even home movies of her with her children.
Yeah, It is MGM studios...I have been there. Called Lucy, a tribute. I got my I love Lucy necktie.,I still get compliments on that tie....because Everyone remembers Lucille Ball.
why is it that only film students have access to these types of treasures. they promised when they started the American Academy of televison museum that they would be made available to all of us, hasn't happened yet.
All I can say is that she deserved every Emmy they ever gave her- and more. She remains one of those legendary television pioneers to whom we owe so much. Yes, she could be difficult and demanding, but she was a STAR who always cared about her audience. We shall never see her equal.
This was a great year for Lucy, a Performance Emmy for her show "The Lucy Show" and her studio returned to glory with two great TV series...Mission Impossible and Star Trek. Mission Impossible was nominated in several categories won the best dramatic series that year as did Barbara Bain for her sexy turn as Cinnamon Carter in MI, and all in all the Emmy awards that night were a triumph for Desilu and its great prexy Lucille Ball.
OMG!! I just dialed that "Best Western" 1-800 number show at the end of this vid and it still belongs to "Best Western" hotels! That was almost 40 years ago! Geez, who knew! lol
wow I loved watching all 11 clips. I'm only 18 years old, but I've been watching Lucy for as long as I can remember. My grandma and I always used to watch her show together. Lucy reminds me of her and my time with her. Its nice to be able to understand and get to know the real Lucy through these videos. Its only a shame that my grandma is no longer here to watch it with me.
Thank you so much for posting all of these. I am 46 and also grew up watching her, in reruns for I Love Lucy and on the Lucy Show in the 60s. I have the front page of my local newspaper, The Orange County Register in Orange County CA, from when she passed away. It was a sad day. She is definitely missed!
Thank you SO very much for posting this entire interview. I just finished watching all 11 episodes...and I realize the work that goes into making and uploading these clips, especially with so many... This interview was EXTRAORDINARY and it was so very special to see Lucy surrounded by all of the people she loved. What a wonderful treat this was....
Thanks again for all of your hard work! It's definitely very much appreciated!
Yes Richii2, what a surprise to see this. If I spell something wrong it is bacause I am crying. I had never seen her acceptance speech for this Emmy. What a heart-felt moment! I never got to meet her, but I did get to meet one of her biographers, and that too, was worth MILLIONS...just like this clip!
im 14 years old and ive grown up on lucy and have watched it my whole life and i can assure you i never will stop watching lucy. shes my idol, hero, and best friend at heart. :)
This is such a wonderful clip, thank you so much! I'm only 21 but I grew up watching Lucille Ball and my whole room is a Lucy tribute. She was and is still sooooo awe-inspiring.
These 11 wonderful segments are the best thing I have ever found on YouTube. Thank you so much for posting!
Seeing Lucy and Gary interact on this show was fantastic - so many times he's painted as a jerk, but he is so funny and charming here! And I just love the way she leaned into him in the other clip when she let slip about the kids' trust funds - that's very telling about their personal relationship.
Her Emmy acceptance speech in this clip was so touching and heartfelt! Thanks again!
Hey pooftaboy73, I really appreciate your feedback. I'm very glad you enjoyed this. I thought it was a very special show that people would like to see, which is why I put it up. And you helped affirm that the effort was worth it. Thanks!
Thank you very much for your comment. This clip was the final of 11 parts, comprising the entire show. I hope you got to see the rest of them as well.
I was raised with watching Lucy. Such a class act and talent from stars of yesteryear. Such talent cannot be replaced or duplicated. This is part of our history. I LOVE LUCY.

I got my I love Lucy necktie.,I still get compliments on that tie....because Everyone remembers Lucille Ball.

why is it that only film students have access to these types of treasures. they promised when they started the American Academy of televison museum that they would be made available to all of us, hasn't happened yet.
etrax2000 3 years ago

ToughXArmy 3 years ago 2
She also sold Desilu that year and made a boatload of money. And she went to work on "Yours, Mine and Ours," which was a huge hit the following year.

wow I loved watching all 11 clips.

This interview was EXTRAORDINARY and it was so very special to see Lucy surrounded by all of the people she loved. What a wonderful treat this was....
