Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me what software you use to capture your screen and also to draw those yellow lines and dots on the video footage of the NHL game? Thanks.
You either need to push real fast so Tampa doesnt have time to set up (as stated) or you could utilize the Flyers strategy & hold off. Tampa is so set & locked into this 1-3-1 style the will not pursue the puck..
Weissie, educating youtube with hockey smarts since his playing days. Dude knows the game, folks. Check out his blog and other videos. He won't steer you wrong.
I have a request. I would love to see video of the teams you coach and some practice vids of said.
You know the game well, nice to see....however, I wouldn't use 1:3:1 and "forecheck" in the same sentence...I'd call that an oxy-moron...also, I think the players have grown tired of this simple, but proven method in Tampa.
Thanks for this. I like watching hockey, but I don't really know much about strategy. Hockey highlights are all fine and good, but rarely do they show good defensive play or strategy.
Sweet setup and very effective however there is 2 versions of the play obviously the defensive and offensive zone traps... with the offensive being geared towards shutting the opposing down at their blue line as opposed to defensive being inbetween home blue line/red line. Also, like weiss said it can be broken on attack with a hard pass to the flying far side winger(if he knows its coming).
Wouldn't it be possible for the defenceman to pass it up to the left, as they start closing, he passes it to the centre and he basically rushes, if they open up on the left or right, he can pass there, if they don't, he shoots for the goal to make the goaltender freeze it, then they get a face off in the zone and can set something else up. Playing with a lot of passes is both difficult and somewhat dangerous, but would it work?
@ason5 Ok dude, i know it's boring as hell and it's killing hockey but it's effective, personally if i was a coach, i would use that system if my team was up by a goal late in the 3rd
@max432156 yeah know same here actually... im an assistant coach for a local kids team, was actually thinking of modifying it and see if i could get em to play it. proboably to advanced for 13 years old though, not sure.
Solid as usual weiss. AS previously stated by gametech2u, i think the bruins more physical play could be trouble. I can see this being beaten by guys who are very good a dump and chase + forecheck, because there's only one defenseman in the back(+goalie) to get the puck. Still, this 1-3-3 is a really solid way to clog up the blue line.
@stevematylewicz good question. i'm not sure there's a "slick, finesse" way of beating it. i think the best bet will be to catch tampa on the transition BEFORE they have a chance to set up. you'll notice in the clips, the caps were very slow on the breakout and regoup set-ups. this allowed tampa to set up their 1-3-1 every time.
on the attack, a hard ring to the weak side might work if the far winger knows its coming and beats his defenseman into the corner.
I think the bruins style of play can expose this 1-3-1, They like to dump and chase and chase hard. They are too big, fast and physical. that extra space available deep in their zone will benefit the bruins for sure. A team that is great at the dump and chase game can expose that 1-3-1.
With that being said, the 1-2-2 forecheck that Tampa uses can really expose the bruins inability to be able to move the puck out of their zone.
@stevematylewicz i wouldn't carry the puck in, thats what they want you to do. Remember back in the old days of hockey, when the swedes played the soviet union in hockey the soviets always on of course or at least most of their matches. As you know the soviet by coaching was always told not to dump the puck in and chase like the canadians. Thats what they where told. Now the swedes created the neutral zone trap this boggled the russians it was difficult for them to do what they do best
@stevematylewicz so they where forced to dump the puck in and going after it, something the soviets was not to good at. So really like weissie said after the pass is connected to either side skate up a little bit and dump it in, this gets the players to turn if not just go agressive in and forcheck like f*ck, send like 3 players down to check.
Death of hockey, not good for nhl.

They are a very forceful team, that's part of the reason they forced the Bruins to seven games last year

this is great...the 1-2-2 transitions so smoothly into a 1-3-1...a great pair of defensive systems that quickly create offense.
How would you suggest a team beat the 1-3-1?
