I think old days are better than now. Why? Native peoples grew up on isolated lands when there was very limited contact with the outside world. But when tv sets, computers and telephones came along, that broke down the wall of isolation and that was when gang banging influence started to infilterate native cultures. Native languages were very strong at the time when there was no radio, no telephone, etc. Now they are in danger of disappering because we hear spoken English everywhere now.

Interesting. I didn't know it was possible to raise kids these days on rug income. I thought it also took livestock. etc. My grandma sells her rugs for less than $100 or else she donates them.

Then again, it's not seen as "poor," the way it's seen by non-Navajos. It's simply a way of living. Looking back, my father wondered how he survived the 'poverty.' It wasn't 'ghetto' or anything like that. It was basically natural and frugal living. All the gangbanging ghettoness is a recent happening.
