There are a pair of push buttons on the side of the unit to do a manual open or close. I didn't want to do an automatic close to prevent the possibility of a half-chicken scenario (not good for the chicken). So when closing, the "close" button is pressed and the door guided closed by hand to ensure the fishing line doesn't go slack. This is done of course when all chickens are tucked-up inside.
