Hehe the only reason orthanc wasn't destroyed was cause it was made by Númenóreans of gondor as a sacraficail spire for the dark lord Morgoth, it is one giant peice of unbreakable stone, how it turned that way i do not know but incase anyone was wondering u got ur answer.

@TheFlood911 everything right except I don't know where the heck you got the 'sacrificial pyre to Morgoth' from. Numenoreans mined black stone, and they didn't take any of that 'Dark Lord' bull shit from Sauron in the Second Age. They made their ancient fortresses huge and scary looking, and that's how they kept order in the South. They built the Black Gate and Cirith Ungol too- they were originally meant not to keep people out of Mordor, but to keep them in.

@MattFerrantino I know that Sauron was able to corrupt the Numenoreans, leading to the island's destruction, but that was toward the end of the First Age. By the Second, which is the one starting with the founding of Gondor and Arnor and ending with the Battle of the Last Alliance, the Men of the West were wise to Sauron and no longer worshiped Morgoth.

It's interesting to compare this scene to the scene in the tragedy of Macbeth where something completely unexpected (as the forest) suddenly comes attacking the bad guy (Macbeth/Sauroman.) As though all the natural things (Malcolm in disguise/Ents) in the world will turn against the bad, unnatural guy creating chaos in the world. Interesting comparison, definitely very, very interesting. And not only is this scene exceptional, the song... oh my gosh... I get the creeps! (In a good way,..)

It always seemed silly to me after seeing the battle of Isengard that treebeard says "It is likely we go to our doom" then proceeding to absolutely destroy Isengard. I get that it's for dramatic effect etc.. and it works quite well in the scene, but looking back it just seems a little weird I guess.
