American's are unwilling to work for lower wages making these products because the cost of living in America as well as other developed countries is high. I don't know what you paid for those boots but if they had been made in the USA the price would be several times higher. But quality would be better. For decades I've been trying to convince Americans to buy American. This whole buy foreign mentality began in the 1970's. First with radios and TV's, then with Automobiles. Sure buying foreign then could save you a few bucks. But in the long run, you fuck yourself in the ass by doing so. Also unions should not be so greedy as to price themselves and the products they make out of the market.

Also, American cars were of very good quality until about 1970.

That was when The government and Ralph Nader forced the car companies to install all sorts of emission and safety devices. Most of which were of dubious value or out right bogus. That same year the UAW won enormous concessions from the 4 auto makers. Things like Jobs Banks, lifetime health ins., widows pensions, 95% unemployment pay, featherbedding. Today each worker on the line cost Detroit Auto makers $74.00 an hour.

In order to deal with these increased expenditures, the domestic auto makers had cut quality to stay competitive. The foreign companies had the advantage of being non union and their costs of the safety and smog equipment could be subsidized by sales in non US markets as well their home currencies were lower than the dollar.

So with all this it took 40 years to bankrupt GM.

It's not just about people that can't afford it - it's about it not being available to working people all across America. Big companies pick up a lot of the tab for their workers - but small companies don't offer it because they can't afford it. Well the premise in this case is that such a person may not need insurance at that specific time, but MAY need it at a later time. It could be for something as unexpected as a car accident or a sudden diagnosis of cancer. The point is, the person who did not have insurance will go to the ER and be unable to pay the exorbitant cost, thus passing it onto the taxpayer. This means everyones taxes go up indirectly and premiums rise. So it's not that you're a criminal; it's an incentive to be covered.
