Any XE (redtop) powered Vauxhall for £250 is going to be any good when you consider the engine alone, if healthy, is worth twice that.

The vid also shows how tough Pugs are under all that 10p French plastic trim.

I reckon a fit 205 GTI 1.9 or mk2 Golf GTI 16v would give a lot of new stuff a run for its money. Trouble is you'd need more than a grand for proper decent examples of either.
