I know many of us watch these and feel fortunate to have been around with bands like Kansas. We loved life, had good times, and no worries for the future. The world was limitless and we cared dearly for all our friends and families. Somewhere along the way we started to care more about things and conveniences than we did for the people. We lost something along the way and that won't ever come back. I miss those days
A $10 concert ticket to be blown away and entertained with all your friends.
When we were 15, my friends and I went to see some band (don't remember who). We walked in, and Kansas was playing "Down the Road." Our jaws dropped! I saw them twice after that, and they were always great; they remain one of my favorite bands.
Not only did Walsh have a great voice, but Robbie Steinhart was very underappreciated as a harmony vocalist. Some of the odd, angular counter-melodies he throws out to support the lead vocal lines are amazing.
There is no room for positive music with an intelligent perspective in mass music today. But there are pockets of goodness still happening, it's just that the weird idiots at Rolling Stone are so concerned with the plight of the black rapper they don't cover any of it...but it's not important.
@tjrtherocksponge You forgot the Father of ALL Progressive Rock! YES! Incredible band that was so far ahead of everybody else when they first came out, it was amazing!
Love it. I'm born in 1949 and have been blessed with the opportunity to hear and enjoy some of the best. I realize each generation thinks their music superior to the next generations. But as time marches on I think the argument is getting near impossible to make any longer. Kansas came when Rock and Roll was in decline. All the great artists died, disbanded, or plain burnt out and unable to recapture what they originally could produce. Then Kansas showed up to the party when we desperate
@robseneff Unfortunatly, Robbie left in 2008 because he lost his stuff. He is now 59 years old. He was getting tired :( Im glad he's getting the well deserved rest he needs.
i did a four year classical music degree in the 80s and none of the classical composers touched my soul the way that kansas did & still do....i wish i could have been as half as good as them:-(
This is from the Monolith tour, 1979/80. I seen them in November 79 at the Hollywood Sporatorium, Sniffin the Tears opened up for them. This was a good concert but the 1977 show from Point of No Return i thought was better.
@MasterWitchDoctor I saw them also on this tour. Man, this brings back memories. I wonder what ever happened to Sniffin the Tears, they were a good opening act for Kansas.
I saw them on this tour. Great band. I even like the dry board mix, as you can hear the raw sounds.
Robby never got his due in my opinion. He had a big hand in the Kansas peak years. All the band did, but he came with up with many identifiable melodies that made those great songs what they were. (if that makes sense)
Awsome! My favorite Kansas song, love the echo effect on Robbie's vocal at 4 minutes. Unfortunately the video cuts off before the gong at the end.
I saw the original lineup perform in KC at a Royals Stadium summerjam, I think with their Point of Know Return tour. Steve Miller band was also there, great show.
No one can inspire or write music like Mr Kerry Livgren can. Period, and with out further discussion. Not Roger Waters, Not Jon Anderson, Not Paul nor John.
If you'll notice, in today's music there are few like them. Dream theater and a small group of others qualify. But for the most the industry labels passify idiot no talent loving masses with the likes of hannah montana and other teen prefabricated, overcommercialized garbage that isn't fit for speakers.
I'm a professional vocalist myself, these guys are the reason I started as a kid in music. They are second to none in my book.
Most music of this time was released before I was even born, I was born in 1985, but I hear what you're saying, ShaliakhYeshai. I enjoy this music as well as other music from this time. All of this modern music crap is annoying, none of those guys even posses the songwriting skills of Kerry Livgren does. The only songwriter superior to Livgren is Jim Steinman, gotta hand Jim Steinman that one, he's the main element of Meat Loaf's career. Other bands, like Styx and Journey are good too.
I have to say that Jim Steinman is a very talented song writer. But to say he is superior To Kerry Livgren is a joke ! As a classical pianist for most of my life the elements this man has used in his music is far superior to anything Steinman has done. How do I know that? I have taught and played many pieces by both of these great artists. Apples and Oranges!!
That's your opinion and I respect it. What I don't respect is those emo fan kids degrading people like Kerry Livgren and Jim Steinman for those bullcrap emo bands like fallout boy and all that other crap.
Eh, so be it. Kids are kids and only appreciate the here and now. That is, until they get older. I know I dig stuff I hated in the 70s and 80s now. It just wasn't "cool" then, but now I'm mature enough to appreciate it.
I think that you can understand that it takes longer for younger generations to appreciate the Classics. I also believe you agree with me that children should not be forcing what they like onto us adults.
Be careful not to generalize....I was first turned on to Kansas through "All I Wanted" when I was 10. Saw them in Wichita in '91 and went backwards from there. I'm 31 now and am an avid fan.
Advice noted. People are tuned to music in different ways, I was actually turned on to Kansas by my father, who was a big fan in their heyday. My dad heard of the Proto Kaw project and has asked me to help him look for mateial on both Proto Kaw and any independent work Kerry Livgren has done.
@dchris24 That's a cool thing to hear, All I Wanted was the third Kansas song I ever heard. Second track on the King Biscuit Flower Hour knock off I bought as my first Kansas CD about three years ago. I was interested after hearing Carry On and Dust on the radio, so I looked Kansas up.
Power was the first studio album I bought and it's still my favorite!
They may be that way, but that's a little prejudice of them to only appreciate the here and now. They still should NOT be trying to force what they appreciate onto us adults. Classics do take time to be appreciated by younger generations.
Record labels used to be run my music fans (Ahmet Ertegun, Don Kirshner, Clive Davis, Bhaskar Menon) and are now run by CEOs and guys in suits. If Kansas came out today, they would not have made it. Kansas came from a time when bands were allowed to keep shooting themselves in foot until they had a hit record. What Kansas did from 1974-80 they couldn't do any wrong though critics hated them, the rock and roll fans loved them. Shame that New Wave pushed Kansas back to underground status.
These Kansas live videos are like finding buried treasure. This concert was from the Audio-Visions tour...the last one before Steve walsh left the band. I saw the opening show from that tour in Dallas Texas. Actually went to the arena the night before the tour started and sat in the parking lot listening to their last rehersal before the tour. Brings back a lot of fond memories!
This is the best vidoeo that I have seen of "Miracles out of Nowhere" So I am going to deleted the copy I have, and make a copy of this one. Great job, Kerry !
WOW!!! Other than the quality of the video, this is my favorite Kansas video on You-tube right now. The band was just flat-out playing with all cylinders firing!!!! Kansas at its best!!!
I started listening to this band when I was 7 years old. Listening to Point of Know return lit up my young mind like a Christmas tree. Worked my way backwards to their first album and acquired each new album until 1980 when they split up. This performance would make for an awesome DVD. Just imagine - remastered and in surround sound. It would be incredible.

Kansas is the greatest and most talented band ever. There are none better. Their music inspires me and makes me feel good. I would give anything to have been able to see them. I'm 49 years old and they will always be my favorite band until the day I die.
I agree! I'm 50 and have seen them 4 times. Three when I was in my 20's and the last time was just last fall. They are still as great as they ever were! Kansas lives!
I totally agree with you. They are the best and I always thought they never got the recognition they deserve. I only wish I could have seen them when I was younger.
