  • I personally like the English version better, ^^

  • What? Who thinks dub is better? I was stunned the whole time because of how much they killed the Japanese version!!!! wtf

  • no, I CAN see the changes, but why is it that on the dub, it looks better? Didn't they make the changes in the Japanese version first then they put those changes in the dub version? I mean, people who dub anime well, just dub it. They don't edit stuff or change stuff ( unless they're 4kids except they don't edit to make it better, only edit to censor)

  • wait. WHAT. SOMEBODY EXPLAIN. Why is the english version better?

  • @LVL100000 Use your eyes, not your ears.

  • america just does anime better. in most cases.

  • @beautyqueenetna1 Careful, them is fightin' words in most cases. You'll most likely be flamed for this opinion, and I will be too. I really hate watching things in Japanese, because for one, I don't speak it, and two, if you are going to read the subtitles, you may as well just read the manga or something. It's also been said that the english dubs make the show bad, and I don't know where this started, but in most cases the dialogue is almost identical... FAN GIRLS, HOW DO THEY WORK?

  • Wait I'm confused so did the animation studio make two version of the Death Note? One for the Japanese audience and one for America? Do all studios do this? Or is Death Note special in this case?

  • I prefer the japanese version of every anime except for obvious cases where the edit looks better. I like the japanese version of this better =/

  • Some parts of the Japanese version do look better. But overall the re-edit looks way better.

  • Guys, the only reason you think the japanese version looks better is because it's apparently "japanese". If you actually read the description (and used your eyes), you'd see that the video is trying to point out that the english version is better animated. Now, don't get your panties in a bunch, the "english" version is just the japanese DVD version with different audio. So rest easy weeaboos, they're both technically japanese.

  • @PantsMadeOfPants Well said man! :D

  • L is so cute :3

  • QUE!!!? que le hicieron a Death note? L se ve tan tan... ah no me gusto por que los estado unidences tienen que cambiarla tanto >=(

  • I don't know, i think i like the English version better.

It looks more expressive in my opinion C=.

  • I wonder why they couldn't use the re-edited version for the dubs?

  • dubs are better i hate all the retarded fan boys and girls who are like i like the Japanese better because its the original and most don't even speak Japanese

    reading gets very annoying

  • @austin25111 I usually prefer the subs because the translations in some dubs aren't correct, and the voices are usually much better in Japanese. I don't hate dubs though, I just think a bunch suck/were lazily made (k-on, clannad, higurashi, etc.). There's a nice amount of good ones too also :3.

"reading gets very annoying" hmm, someone's lazy, aren't they?

  • 2:38 what a fat chick

  • the japanese sure loves people with bags under their eyes...

  • lol Light's more buff in English XD

  • The Japanese Version Of This Is Indeed Quite More Detailed, As Well As Their Ability To Capture The Emotion In The Images With The Voices.

  • Newfags watch dub

  • LOL. They sound manlier in Japanese.

  • Weeaboos everywhere

  • mmm i preffer the japanse one, but probably it's only me

  • :O How weird

I had no idea they reanimated it for dubbing

Interesting.... xD and Sounds like a lot of work!

  • the manga art is better than either of them

  • Oh, my! I am so very sorry to say this, but having only one Misa on screen is agonizing enough. Alas, now I have witnessed two of her on screen! Please make Misa stop talking T-T!!!!

  • God, bitch, much? I like your videos but honest to imaginary Jesus, you are a professional twat. Maybe that was only those years ago or whatever, but seriously, kid.

  • @Luffy0123456789 "professional twat" is a hilarious phrase. I approve of this comment.

  • @Hikaripop And only 8 months late. I see you actually HAVEN'T committed an hero yet. Sadface.

  • oh god english dub sucks ass -_-

  • i like how they inserted a pun in the dub

also misa's voice is more annoying in original

  • Mmmhh I don't know which one to for, at some points the English one is better, and in others the Japanese one is better O.o

  • the english is definitely better. it's the Japanese DVD animation right? cuz the Japanese!TV version looks cheap almost generic. :>

  • with both misa's talking at the same time, i thought i was gonna explode O.O

  • It's obviously not that people have gained weight, there's something different about the aspect ratio between the two.

The Yostuba members look better in their Japanese lighting, but I like they generally drew L as more... angular? ..for the English.

It really does depend what frame I'm looking at as to which version I prefer.

  • English version is Japanese DVD version... Misa looks better edited, and L on some parts does too but on some not. For example:

    0:42 DVD / 0:44 DVD / 0:54 TV / 1:24 DVD / 1:34 Both are bad as hell / 1:39 TV

Light looks better in DVD version, and guys from Yotsuba don't. Nearly everything is better edited, but with Japanese dub, not with the English one, and few scenes.

  • Don't you people realize they do this with a lot of anime?

They usually mess around with the anime once it goes to DVD.

The "Japanese" version is probably the DVD version, the English is probably TV.

Maybe they never dubbed over the DVD version.

  • Mogi was there in L vs Light part 2?

    Wow whats the deal with the editing stuff ;_;

  • imo i think the english looks better :l expecialy the misa part

  • You realize the English version is the Japanese DVD version, right?

  • was it so hard to have both the videos in proper size and proper aspect ratio on next to the other? the english one even has its left side cut off

  • it almost always sounds way more natural in Japanese. English dub overs sound to generic and sound too much like Nickelodeon cartoons. and somehow the english voice actors sound like they're all overweight, especially the female dubs.

  • @ShinSpitfire and technically the screen on the right has been formatted to fit a standard screen. there's a lot of comments from people that probably don't understand that its meant to shown on a wide screen format. wider screen fool!! that's how chink eyed people view the real world anyhow!

  • why does the right side look more squished up then the left?

  • 1:28 WTF DID THEY DO TO L'S NOSE? Geezus. Japanese is crazy as hell but at least they don't have shit quality with alotta things.

  • Everyone is so thin in the Japanese version! D:

  • Damn, good to know Americans are picking up the Japanese's slack. =)

  • The English animation and voicing better capture L's character. Tired, dedicated, eccentric, and impassive. The Japanese drawings look stock, as though simple re-colorings of other anime characters.

  • I think they both look good in some scenes. Sometimes the Japanese QUALITY looks better and sometimes the English one does. For example...how about L's MASSIVE Japanese jaw?

  • I like some of the angles better in the Japanese version, but the English has overall better art.

  • I like the English version better, the characters are too skinny in the Japanese version, it looks kinda wierd. As far as the color difference, still English, given the mood of the anime, bright colors just aren't fitting. (It could just be me who thinks that though)

  • Wow... The English version is... an improvement. xD

Everyone's jaw seems to be so much longer and painful looking in the Japanese version. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that they took out that L's dynamic close up. But that's it. The animation is so much more... full in the English version.

  • The original shows more detail in the faces and has more vivid colors. Why did they bother editing all that?

  • Agreed. The English version looks much better.

  • I like the improvements for some reason. They feel a lot less cheap.

  • Ew, I hate L's english voice.

  • Who likes the Japanese dub L at 1:31 better than the English one?

  • i am SO watching the japanese version of death note.

  • I REALLY DONT GET IT OR SEE THE DIFFERENCE.

  • The english definitely seems more stylized and not just, I hate to say it, pumped out like the japanese one does.

  • the japanese is so much better. and L is so much awesomer n cuter

  • @JEluvs2laugh

    hahahaha

animated so cheap you like that?

  • @GoldNCase whatever

  • I prefer the japanese version because somehow it's slightly more intense. Look at 0:50, doesn't L seem like he clearly has something complex going through his mind as he stares at Light in the japanese version?

  • @trueopaque However from a quality standpoint, this is just a cheap camera trick. It may look intense due to the greater emphasis on shadows, but the detail as a whole suffers greatly. Plus as much as you and many others hate to admit it: the English version did look a LOT more refined than the Japanese version did as a whole. Really 0:50 was the only point in which there was even a shred of doubt about that, and even that certainly didn't redeem every flaw.

  • Japanese version anime always seems to be better with the graphics. Its like everything is brighter since its untampered with.

  • @Bayto2009 No one messes with the video, bro. The only thing english dubbing companies mess with is the sound. This is the english aired episode compared to the japanese aired episode, but the japanese edited it for the dvd version after it aired in Japan.

  • @Hikaripop Ok so the english version is the dub of that edited version. Thought it was strange that they would edit it before sending it stateside.

  • At times the original version looks better and at times the DVD looks better..

Actually, I prefer the original. Are you sure that isn't the DVD version?

  • The english version seems a lot more realistically animated, but they're both pretty awesome. :)

  • I hate Misa, she's a stupid bitch.

  • The English part of this and the English dub as a whole are better than the Japanese version.

  • Comment removed

  • I actually like the english one better, without the dubbing.

  • I actually like the way Misa looks more in the English version. Her eyes, mostly.

  • why did they re animate it for english? its kinda odd theyed do that XP

  • The Japanese one looks a lot sharper but the characters do look better in the English one (well, except for the Yotsuba members), especially Misa. You can really see the difference at 2:45....although I don't really know what happened to her arm on the left one, lol.

  • does anyone know if this is the only episode re-edited?

  • anyone know if this is the only episode re-edited

  • anyone know if this is the only episode re-edited?

  • anyone know if this is the only episode re-edited?

  • 1:32 they edited Matsuda out haha that's a great way to improve a scene

  • I do prefer some of the original angles but the reedit looks best.

  • The English one does look better, but it's a wide screen edit of something that was standard. All it does is cut out content so I don't see the point.

  • Weird, is this really true? OMG I'm gonna cry!

  • @Relesy ;__; Why are you going to cry?

  • @Hikaripop I thought it was cool that the animation was the same...

  • @Relesy

    Animation = Same

    Drawing = Different

  • the quality is definately better in the jap version.

  • they are both originally japanese but the left is the DVD release and the right is the "tight for time, get it out there" aid on TV version. They might have been low on budget when it needed to be aired and cleaned it up for the DVD.

The english dub picked up the better looking one because it was available. They did not change it.

This happens quite a bit in anime.

  • Plus, L's hair looks blue at some parts in the Japanese episode, but in the english dub, L's hair is always black...

  • X. D.

  • Oh thats kool to see bothe japanese one and the english one,,, I think the english one and japanese one are equally good...

  • IMO, everyone looks better in Japanese, except 4 L, he looks good in both.

  • @Chaolover116 No offense but you sound like a Japanophile, dude.

  • @Hikaripop Your name is Hikaripop, you're uploading anime videos and you're saying other people sound like Japanophiles?

  • @Shia840 Yes I am. Liking anime doesn't make me a japanophile.

  • @Chaolover116 You do realize that the "English version" as you call it consists of redrawn animation by the Japanese themselves? The "English version" is the DVD version.

  • in the english dub, everyone looks more stretched out...

  • i want to seriously beat up someone badly who thinks this dub or any is/are terrible

  • @SmashLiXs Some dubs are very terrible. This dub had only one or two moments of awkward voicing in the whole season, so I don't know why everyone complains.

  • @Hikaripop everyone complains about dubs. some say some are so terrible it's actually good (which sometimes means it's funny)

  • Every anime seems to have at least one episode that looks like total shit. Death Note episode 20 is THAT episode... >_> Geez, ya lazy animators...

  • it's funny, someone presents evidence that in some ways the english gub was better, and there are still tons of japanophiles going "nu-uh! english sucks! Japanese art is infinity times better!"

  • It should be titled DVD / TV... not English / Japanese

and you messed with the ratio.

  • @Decembirth It's not titled English/ Japanese. owo;

  • @Hikaripop

    Within the video I mean.

Judging by the comments, some people believe that the licensee changed the show, also stretching both videos made them visually different. But I understand what you were trying to do.

  • @Decembirth I did nothing to the videos, Adultswim's website is responsible for the English version's ratio. And those people are stupid if they believe the licensee could possibly edit and even reanimate frames of the original show, not only are they not capable of this, they have no authority to do so. Furthermore, said licensee would not give a crap about the art, as they are only translating.

I do not understand how ANYONE came to the conclusion that America edited this.

  • OMG! that means i've been watching the japanese drawings the whole time! XD

  • god at 1:29 the English are SO MEAN to matsuda! matsudas torment is bad enough as it is! xD

  • wholy shit. that was trippy ._. couldnt look away.....

  • I just wonder why they did it at all, like making some characters look better(like 0:04),worse/more tired(eg. 1:24),more masculine(eg. 2:28),more breasty(eg. 2:58),changing the angle(like 2:29),changing the looks of the characters at all (eg. 2:32 , 2:47 , 1:24),cutting them from the takes(like 1:30 , 2:47 , 3:03 o.O)or changing their poses(2:08 , 2:31 , 3:03)?Why did they try so hard to change such meaningless details instead of letting that beautiful anime be as it was in the original version?

  • @regerabit To be honest, they did an extremely poor job on this episode. It was so ugly to look at when I first saw the original aired version. It was NOT beautiful. It looked like filler art. It was so crappy. That's why they changed it. Death Note is supposed to be high quality art. Not this squished face stretched face bull crap.

  • Comment removed

  • For once they actually made it look better than the Japanese version. WHOA.

... At lest for most of it. xD

  • at 1:29 i think soichiro looks better in the english than in the japanese version.

  • Whoa, that's so weird! How did you notice that?

  • i like the Japanesse version, but until 1:50, english is better, misa looks weird for the matter in Japanesse version

  • I see it too. They made him look more like "messy hair hawt druggie" look instead of "Cute creepy kind of geeky" in the japanese.

  • The edits that I noticed in particular:

1:22: L looks more sleep deprived than usual in the Dub

1:30: Poor Matsuda, he's got an even less of a role in the English Dub.

1:50 - end: Light has more of a muscular build, and Misa has more chest volume.

The subs has a more anime-style idealistic character design, while the dubs make it more of an American-style character design. (Subs: male> cool and slim, female> cute and small, Dubs: male> big and buff, female> short and busty) my opinion, anyway

  • @AlertLowBattery Strict connotation you have there. ..You use words "cool" and "cute" for the "Japanese preference" and the words "big" and "short" when talking about "American preference"-- Generally raw and ugly words compared to cool and cute. I also note that you prefer to call "Japanese" Light slim instead of scrawny. In any case, this is the DVD edit. Japanese prefer their men "big and buff", and their women "short and busty" too.

  • @Hikaripop Didn't notice that. I was aiming for a more literal use of the words I guess. (though that doesn't make sense since cool and cute are generally useless without their connotations). I suppose big and buff or small and not-buff would be a personal preference for anyone. Not sure what you want me to do though. I dont really see any direct attack in your reply, so I think I'm suppose to take it as a friendly suggestion that I be a bit more fair in my opinions?(a bit stereo-typing I guess)

  • It appears that the English version is big on Width while the Japanese version is big on Height... I think Misa's voice and etc is more annoying in the English version DX

  • woah just noticed its way different!

  • the English version looks more realistic than the Japanese...

  • It's kinda weird seeing the Japanese and English side by side.

Misa was annoying but she had better hair and looked so much cuter in the Japanese than the english.

It's pretty funny that everything got a bit of weight(LOL the cup)

  • @MahouNekoShady misa looked so much better in the english version, but L looked better in the japanese version

  • L is so bendnecked and thin on japanese. o.o

  • Meh~I hate the english version...they totally screwed up the voices...L's voice is more cooler too ( in the Japanese version) lol

  • @xXDrowningNemoXx

I'm on the same opinion. I also like the original version more (and the Japanese L's voice). Why don't they just let it be as it is? O.O

  • the japanses ones look skinny and funny but the american version has the humor taken out of it. (look on L's face at 1:31 XD)

  • Somehow I think the characters in the English one have gained weight. Even the cup in 0:40 gained size.

  • My gahd, Misa is annoying in both 0_0

  • but thank god Misa's voice is alot lower in the english, but yea, still freakin annoying xDD

  • I think that the Japanese version is a lot better.

  • Yeah I agree that the English looks better.

  • lolz at 1:30.L looks more disturbed in the japanese one.

  • english looks better XD

  • ENGLISH L DRINKS FASTER!

  • umm the english one look better but the japenese one makes misa look hot and the english makes her ugly

  • u kidding? she looks better than her messed up cartoon looking self in the original

  • misa looks better in japanese

  • they gained a lot of weight in the english version, but some scenes or parts look better than the Japanese version...

  • LOL xD They look so much shorter in the English Version. I wonder why the changed it...The English one does look a little better x]

  • I still love L's english voice. <3

  • i prefer the japanese vocals...the english dub sounds older than the character's age...if Kenichi could speak english as well as the English dubber's then he could ahve done the vocals for eng dub.

  • Kenichi waaaas great. <3 He made the perfect live-action L. But I can't help but like Allesandro's voice.

  • wow.... misa is annoying in both languages.

  • Wow. O.o I like the English one better. But the sound quality in the japanese one is better

  • japanese version forever

  • 2:34

    L's god-like pose xD

    bwahaha

  • nicer hair in the eng dub....but still like i had said...about the vocals...

  • Misa doesn't look as punk in the Japanese one

either way her voice is annoying! I just want to bang my head aginst a wall

  • I like the English version better. Except that Light looks fatter there. xD

  • I like the Japanese one better. c:

  • They are both still Death Note,

So they are both amazing! :D ^^

  • I like the english better, i think the voices just match the characters more somehow. But i'm not saying that i don't like the japanese version either...

  • I prefer the japanese version, it's not as silly.

  • misa is sooooo annouying LOL

  • AHHHH Misa'a VOice it BUrnssss O.o

  • 1:48 Everyones fatter in english! :D

  • How'd you find this?

  • Light's face is longer in the Japanese version, L's face is flatter at some points, and Misa looks a bit older to me in the Japanese version than the english one. But I love both.

  • ok this is confusing I DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE IS BETTER AND THE 2 MISAS ARE SO ANNOYING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • My guess is that the original animation studio cleaned it up. Maybe they did it for the Japanese DVD release.

It really does look so much better. I think there is always a random episode in every anime where the art goes to hell, and this one was it (fourteen didn't really go to hell, it just kind of randomly switched styles... surprised they didn't change that too).

...Hahaha, I think the boys buffed up a little in the newer version. XD You can see it at 1:31 for Light and 2:33 for L...
