happy days, the ABC stores broken biscuits in the door on the left, running out of the apollo on
saturdays into bright sunshine faces orange from the palm grove ice pops rushing home to make wooden swords and bin lids as shields into moonies field fighting great days
Is that the Shaper (Collinge) who was a narcissistic little bully when he was teacher at the "comp" and would take misbehaving pupils out of the classroom to challenge them to a fist/karate fight.
Great to see the "backer" aka Field Avenue field which used to host all the sports days and football road leagues back in the sixties / early seventies
Im Leo Lieghio, i was 8 back in 65. We had the Fish n Chip Shop with the Barbecue snack bar right next to the Apollo. It was great seeing the old place like it used to be. The shop at the corner of the butchers was called Findlaters. I remember most of the shops. Roches chemist next door, the Mahons up the road O'Briens and the ABC. I remember my brother Joe god rest him being great friend with Willie Madden, and other ushers, and how they used to sneak us in my brother Anthony and i for free.
Excellent footage. I grew up on Thomas Moore road so Im really amazed that this clip was out there. Notice the youth back then knew how to dress and aren't like today's Hooded skanks :-/ This must be the only footage out there of The apollo cinema before and after it was unfortunately burnt down

Denny O'Malley here. I was 9 in 1965. I lived on Balfe Avenue with my 7 brothers and 2 sisters and of course my parents and spent many a Saturday afternoon in "The Apollo". Wow that's some video. O'Briens shop, The ABC,and in the Apollo we had Bulldog and Willie the ushers. Two in a seat there kids. They used to spit on the back of Bulldoge jacket as he walked through the cinema hittin' kids. The cleeves toffee and the fizz bags.
I remember the Apollo for its Saturday matinee, running home with duffle coat trailing behind me as a make believe cape after the Batman "follying upper" I married a girl from Bunting Road. This is a wonderful video.
To see this video has brought me back . I am from Thomas Moore rd and I remember three of the people in the video. I was the same age as Frank Murray's younger brother Brian and we all went to see skid row and Phill Lynott at the Adelade club on Adelade road with concession tickets we got from Frank Murray. I have watched this video several times now and I just cant get over it, its a link to a time when Walkinstown was my whole world. Thank you very much for putting it up
Love the vid. even though I was only 3 in 1965!!, I lived on Hardebeck Ave, which is beside the "green" shown in the video. The paths are gone from it now. Went to school with Declan Collinges sister Zita. Great memories of the Apollo Cinema, going there every Sat and seeing Roy Rogers !! Great too seeing all the old shops only the ABC still left. Thanks for the memories ............
I had declan collinge as a teacher in the comp he's an excellent teacher just don't piss him off lol, he wrote a couple of books and one of them was about his years growing up in dublin he used to read it to us in class we al used to love his story's
Yeah.......... the very guy.....Philip Lynott attended my 18th Birthday party on Bunting Road in 1966. Frank has been my friend since school days in Drimnagh Castle.
Thanks for your support. The Apollo Cinema (outside of which the lads are sliding on the icy road) has since been demolished and replaced by a housing complex. I saw many films there including one called " Never Take No For An Answer."
@TheNovasIreland Definitely not nthe ABC on the later clip its actually some shop @ the corner of the butchers which is obviously long gone. Quiet amazing footage though, I was looking for photos of The Apollo Cinema over the years including when it was burning down which was a shame of course
