definately not a fare comparrison. Signing sytles are obviously different. Radu, nearing his peak of perfection while Moreschi obviously at the end of his career.

Interesting juxtaposition -- thanks for making the video!

One other factor about Alessandro Moreschi that folks commenting here have missed. At the time he recorded, just about all singers sang with pronounced "scoops": sliding up or down to the pitch. Listen to some Caruso recordings from 1900-1910 to hear a tenor doing this.

i recently heard an author interviewed on npr who wrote a book on castrati and he said that moreschi was never considered one of the greatest castrati; merely the last. I enjoy his voice, though, and am glad he lived long enough to be recorded.

Well, all was already said below about Moreschi and Marian... I love them both.

But what I think, above all, about this video is this :

Rossini's "Crucifixus" is definitively one of the most lousy piece of music ever composed! Null and void... :-)

The voice of Marian is pure and delicate,very rare!It is only his timbre,which is fascinating,very fascinating,indeed!But he is only a body who is singing,that'sall.And his low notes are very poor.

Moreschi's sings in the pure and great tradition of the Bel Canto,

giving all his soul.When he did his registrations,his voice perfect.He was much too professional to record if he had felt that his voice was not in the fullness of his strength.

And Moreschi is undoubtedly a musical genious.

It's not a fair comparison and I'm tired of people criticizing Alessandro. The recordings were poor and this is later in his life. There are also other factors to consider which I won't get into here. By the way, he was over 40 when he made the recording. He was not 64.

I feel so sad for Alessandro....to hear his voice..the voice of a 40 something year old man...he sounds like he's barely a teenager. I feel sad that he was castrated...the pain he must have felt...but knowing that other folks knew of his situation and stared at him knowing he was castrated.

The whole situation seems sad to me. I mean. His situation seems cruel. His voice alludes to that.

I think the primitive recording is hardly flattering for him, plus you have to remember he was 64 when he made this recording.

No, he died at 64. He made these recordings when he was in his mid forties.

The big difference is that all moreschis recordings were done late in his life when his voice was no longer at its greatest.

Thanks for sharing this juxtaposition. Radu's voice is beautiful and unique. I truly wish he'd release more CD's.
