I just started watching your videos today - the're great, and super helpful. I only found it because I was trying look up how to dye edible rice paper, I didnt find that but I was glad to find this. I think I want to try sumi-e on rice paper because of it. Thanks - these are fantastic!
I made the paste twice so far. I'm not sure if I added enough hot water because the colour didn't change as you describe. I stopped adding hot water when I reached the maximum volume you recommend. Should I be bold and add more?
Thanks so much for this video. I purchased the 2 brushes: the soft for getting rid of the bubbles, and the harder brush for pressing the backing paper on to the painting. When I used the hard brush, I damaged the backing paper. Was I pressing too hard?
@Shikibu63 Flower is cellulose and is a VERY bad substance for conservation of old scrolls. Especially in himid cointries, cellulose attracts moulds and insects. One better uses a BEVA 371 film as a glue (NOT the paste with tolene...).
@chappbe Thanks for your comment and info. BTW, this was an old video and I have been using silicone film paper for dry mounting for three years. Please see my other videos on dry mounting with silicone paper. Thanks!
I don't know what I did wrong. I used whole wheat flour and there are little brown seeds all over the painting. Did I use the wrong flour? Please help me out
yeah i think you use the wrong flour cuz there are a varieties of wheat flour... whole wheat flour has a brawish color, maybe it caused your painting to have brown spots...try the white kind and see if it helps.
'Thank you so much for this instruction. You have helped me so much. I had no clue what glue to use to mount pictures. Now, thanks to you, I know. Thank you so much for sharing.
I've never heard of using Alum in the mounting paste. Is this a recent method? I actually boil the flour/water mixture in a pot on the stove. Thanks for posting!
No, it is an old traditional method. Alum is also used as a size to make raw Xuan paper(Sheng-Xuan) into a no-absorbent Xuan(Shu-Xuan) for elaborated style of Chinese painting.
Great explanation!

The consistancy could be thicker than you need during cooking with hot water. You may add more cold water to dilute it before using.

You need to cover the backing paper with at least two layers of newspaper. Change the newspaper when it gets wet.
