What is the name of this video? Is it available on DVD? I saw this one time at a Hockey Camp in Montreal, and I'd love to buy it? Anyone out there have any info for me?
@TheHeeelios i don't think it will ever be released on dvd. and the vhs i have is the only one i've ever seen. its called "champions vol. 1 - wayne gretzky" made in 1983.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi Roy and Hasek for sure. dryden had savard, robinson, lapointe, langway and a phenominal team in front of him. esposito was probably as good in his era. i would have to put him a tier under with espo, billy smith, glenn hall, bower. greatest ever sawchuk- brodeur-tretiak-roy-hasek 4 sure
@znogypogy doesn't matter who you have in front of you. You still need to stop the puck. Look how horrible the goalie Dryden took over for did. sorry He is numbers are insane.
Gretzky's father likely comes from a Polonized background. He's probably ethnic Byelorussian or Russian. Many Byelorussians were Polonized and the Poles in present day Belarus are in fact descendants of Polonized Byelarussians.
You could tell Gretzky really likes Tretiak and his family. Dan Henderson said that the Soviet players he met were the very humble and decent just like Tretiak's family here.
its good to see that Wayne re-connected with his roots or at least those close to his roots.
Gretzky's ancestors being ethnically from eastern Europe!
Gretzky is a typical east Slavic name...
makes sense that the greatest player in the history of the game would have both Canadian (huh) and Russian (belo?) blood running through his veins lol
I am old enough to have seen Tretiak, Parent, Roy, Smith, Dryden and on and on. Hands down, best goalie to walk the face of the earth was Tretiak. All the guys mentioned are great, but you can't simply say "compare the stats". You can't, but the man was a wall and his talent cannot be questioned.
@SteveGreenMachine I'm the same vintage as you, and I totally agree. For example, if it had been any goalie on earth between the pipes for the Sovs on New Years Eve 1975, that game against the Habs would have been a slaughter. Dryden was my hero when I was in my teens, but he was unnaturally flat against the Sovs. They had his number for sure. Tretiak is the greatest of all.
Both players are legends. Sportsmanship in any sports is displayed in such videos - opponents on ice but friends in life. I really like what one US soldier said to Soviet during Cold War that "we are not enemies, we are just on the different sides".
P.S. Black caviar was really hard to get in Soviet Union even for a hockey star at that time.
Tretiak was a Beast! He was the goalie that Herb Brooks told his team before The 1980 US Hockey team's first game with the Soviets that if you score on him, KEEP THE PUCK! Because it doesn't happen very often. That wasn't just in the movie either, Herb told them that in real life and they used it in the movie. To bad he never got to play in NHL, he would of went down as a legend!

Ok, here's 10: Roy Brodeur Sawchuck Jacques Plante Glenn Hall Dominik Hasek Mike Richter Ken Dryden Tony Esposito Bernie Parent Grant Fuhr. Just compare the stats. These guys are better.
Dude...You can't compare with stats....And fyi, none of these goalies had the pressure Tretiak had on his shoulders from day 1 with the Red Army team...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Maybe, but u can't compare without stats. And what about the pressure put on the Team Canada goalies near the latter half of the 72 series? There is always too sides to every story, just like there are two sides to every ocean.
World's finest....show me who could win series against the team Canada of 1974 and post shutouts against Montreal and be the youngest Olympic champion at 20.....and be inducted into the hall of fame without playing even 1 game in the NHL.....Tretiak is the best, only 1 or 2 Canadian goalies come close to him....
Im with you brother, I have seen the films, but was not alive during his prime. Tretiak would of definately been the goalie on an NHL team that won multiple Stanley Cups. Unfortunately for him politics of the time prevented it. True hockey fans know the truth. We in the USA have seldom seen a goalie with his skills.
Yeh Talent is Talent, even in Australia lol, its not about where he is from, but rather how he plays.....The U.S. coach of the 1980 Olympics said if you score on Tretiak, take the puck and keep it, cause it doesn't happen often.
His determination to fight through games was crazy, the whole soviet team didn't have mercy on themselves, they would sweat blood....which led up to 7 Olympic Golds and 15 years od domination...back to back.
But everybody has his day =) USA had their shot in 80's
@Sergei91 well my friend hockey players are now faster stonger bigger better .......... your goalie would get chewed up in todays world soo be happy he had his shine in the 70s and shut up hes not that great.
I am Ukrainian, and Ukraine was never part of russia or else how could it be a separate republic in the union?? u think fist then post ur stupid comments. it was conquered by Russia when it was still weak from Polish rule but like i said it was always different country.
Mr Bendera, you don't know history! If Poland was conquered by Russia - it was Russian territory. Ukraine was never part of Russia?? You are UNO moron! Ukraine was Russian territory from Khmelnitsky times - It called Malorossia. Lenin gave Poland freedom & made from Malorossia satelitte republic.
Even todays Ukranian flag is a copy of Swedish flag not Russian (good old Swedish Times of ruling Ukraine, right?) Russians (try to spell it with a capital letter punk) were allies with Ukraine unlike some conquerers who didn't allow Ukraine to educate or have seperate government Russia allowed everything. Same with Georgia and Russia alliance in a time of "Turkish Massacre". Those were the times of wars and Ukraine was and is separate cuz alliance doesnt make you conquered.
