Absolutely a classic. JA and Jimi remain tied at the top of my list.
Interesting little tidbit I got from a Hispanic friend of mine. I played this song to him one time and asked him if he enjoyed the Spanish lyrics--he told me her Spanish has a Mexican accent. :-)
Suggestion: Check out Joan Baez "El Preso Numero Nueve" from one of her earliest albums. If you liked this one, you'll probably like that one too.
When I had my first discernible measure of success in the early eighties, I bought a badass SAE 1500 watt amp and two 1961 JBL Voice of the Theater speakers with 15" drivers with big steel horn tweeters that weighed 26 pound EACH. (just the tweeters)
Then I bought a Thorens turntable with kickin cartridge. Then I played this album, at least once a day, for close to a year, and even though i was on five acres, I assure you, my neighbors knew this album as well as I did.

blinko656 is stoopid! ,,maybe he works at Walmart and lives in Santa Cruz..but Grace is a multi- millionaire and lives in MALIBU . THEE BEST singer in the known UNIVERSE!
@Tubenesser Dude I saw her and was a big fan. I was raised in SF and went to their concerts. I talked to her for a while and she said, 'everybody has to pay their bills".
love this album...used to play it over and over again when I lived in Ottawa..The Royal Winnipeg Ballet..did a whole ballet to this album and I had the great fortune of seeing it performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa...this was my intro to the album..a classic for sure...
i am English and proud to say i have the vinyl still (and the CD), all the entire Airplane, Kantner/Slick recordings. But this is really Grace's finest. Slagged off by Melody Maker but for me it is totally brilliant. "Don't tie me down, I want to run. Give me the sun"
where can i get this ? i have the old vinyl. i want it on my iphone. i know i may sound dumb but itunes ( which bites) doesnt have it and i love her voice on this. always one of my favorites of gracies who i have had a crush on for 40 years or so.
i wantt this so badly on my iphone. thanks so much for putting it on
the first (and only, until now) time I ever heard this was at a party, in 1976, where I was tripping on LSD. The perfect frame of mind to listen to this!
'don't hold me down, I wanna run, give me the sun,'
Thanks for posting! I still need to find my favorite cut off this album - "Come Again Toucan?" - beacause as Gracie says in the song "Mistakes are made because words are misunderstood..."
This may be Grace's best song overall, but the album as a whole was a disappointment. There must have been a mad rush to get it finished because one track has David Frieberg singing with no Grace at all and the last track only has her singing harmony. Those two tracks are not even her songs
Am a big JA/Grace fan. bought this on vinyl when first released, have the CD now it's on my ipod. For me, despite JA, Starship, collaborations with Kantner et al, in various forms, this will always be Grace at her very best.
What happened to the Movie? Anyone know? I'm on to research to find out why and what, but I can't find any historical facts on this! Anyhow I've always loved the album and I can never get enough of it! Thank you...
There was never any movie. She WAS interested in composing for movies and, in a way, this could be seen as something of an "audition piece." It does seem to play well as the soundtrack to a movie in one's mind tho'. Very cinematic in its feel.
Very interesting, only listening to both sides of the vinyl album my imagination run wild I envisioned an entire story which goes between Mexican revolutions within a love story seen trough the eyes of a woman... thanks
Grande! Studenti a Padova (1973-78) uno di noi lo faceva sentire in continuazione a tutto il condominio.
Miracolo: nessuno ha mai protestato...
Merito di Grace Slick o della tolleranza degli anni '70?
When we were students at Padova University (Italy), one of us was in love with Grace and was used to play Manhole over and over ghrough the the entire condominium. No one ever complained. Ah, the Seventies...
Very crass. Yeah, she meant it as a joke, sort of in response to some of the self-serious feminism going on at the time. But as "liberated" as Grace may have been on matters sexual, she would not have been about the kind of cheap porn fantasy you're describing.
you're right! no doubt the movie was to be about her manhole being pounded by drug using rock star after drug using rock star, but no doubt she'd have sassed it up with all kinds of vague images of females with babies, the dying world, nashville in the summer and boiled eggs. shame,as the original idea of her being a 'manhole' would have definitely made it to the silver screen, and undoubted success. the 'koyanasquatsi' vision, needless to say, did'nt.
thanks man. yeah,it's a great idea for a movie. do you think that if she read my ideas for the movie she might think of making it? im looking forward to david crosby and carlos santana appearances in the chapter called 'oreo manhole'. as long as she entertains, who cares eh!?!
It might be too subtle and sophisticated. Do you think you could "dumb it down" a bit...for the masses, you know? Oh, and maybe about 35 yrs too late. Darn.
yeah,we could do that. how about tony bennett and sammy davis jnr instead? we could keep the chapter title, but just smooth it out a bit with these two easy dudes. we dont want to rush her manhole, afterall this is only part one! what's 35 years to grace slick!?! i reckon the manhole is still in working condition!
Wow!! I've been looking for this song for years. I thought it was called Spanish Lover. I heard this thing over and over again. And it's just as fabulous. Thank you for posting it.
I have this album and I still love it. I saw her many times. I had front row seats or should I say we all stood, It was in NYC central park. And she was GREAT
my comment should be safe from eyes here - can't believe so few people have ever found Grace singing this. Orgasmic Grace at her best. What would you have done with her? Me too! Fantastic!
this is one fucking beautiful song. the whole thing is 20 min long and seems to be one of the last times she attempted to merge art and music. i still have my vinyl copy.
Funny how this version jumps at exactly the same place as the rip of my vynyl.
