I gave up going to church for lent because one is supposed to sacrifice something causing suffering. Hell is ultimate suffering because it is ultimate seperation from God so that not going to church is a little slice of hell. This is what happens when parents shove their 15 yr old closet atheist son into a catholic theology class.

Another statistic they should have pulled out is the survival rate of pregnant women/babies before we advanced our medical sciences. Then it would be even more overwhelming clear there is no "divine intervention".

Pro life people make me ill. They care so much for the unborn and so little for the ones that are. Born to suffer, die, starve, abuse, molestation, & every other atrocity imaginable. Never mind the babies that are born to drug addicts, prostitutes, molesters, abusers, & physiologically damaged people. I don't see Christians rallying to save these children once they pop out. They care more about cells & taking away women rights then the millions of children in orphanages, foster care & etc..

@slickwick45 My best guess or at least one of them on that would be that religion has always had this weird sick obsession with sex and the need to control all aspects of it. Your not allowed to masturbate, use condoms, birth control or have pre-marital sex. So if you can't attack sex at the source then attack it from its outcome, being pregnancy. It at least would explain their complete disregard for babies after their born.

The Bible tells us the wages of sin are death. We're told by religious leaders that babies are born with original sin--that we are sinful BEFORE birth. So why are Christians against abortion at all?

If the taken creations get to heaven, then that cheapens the whole concept of life for the rest of us, making it an unfair journey. And if they go to hell, it's unfair for them. Overall it's nonsense.

Do you believe you will retain your personality, thoughts and memories in heaven? If so, what will these babies have?

@Screatus Some Christians make up new rules so babies will be granted an exception to that so they will feel better in church on Sunday. Remember limbo? That's where unbaptized babies were sent, at least until the Catholic Church decided it didn't exist. How they arrived at that conclusion I have no clue. But you are right - they think we are all sinners and deserve to burn unless we accept Jesus... but infants never got that option. None of it makes any sense.

If we are stuck in that the point of this life is to live this life, then we can never truly see the end. If we go on this life knowing it's all for the sake of the next, then each one of us has trials and issues to deal with to get to the next. Everyone is given challenges they have to face.

Do you feel that personality, memories, or thoughts matter in an eternal joy or reward?

If someone is retarded, but believes in Jesus, does that mean they will live for eternity that way? If someone is "saved," but their memories are of being abused and humiliated, will they carry those memories forever? What "personality, memories, or thoughts" will a two year old who dies from leukemia have for eternity? Barney the Dinosaur?

And as I said with regards to memories, personality or thoughts...in the next life, the life we're made for, those things don't matter.

Can you please recommend a good book for me to read to support your arguments (aside from the one I already read from Dawkins)? I recommend Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.

As for a book which exposes why people believe in practical terms, I recommend you go on Amazon and find "Christians Believe the Darndest Things" by Jehovah Yahweh.

@TheOracle1956 I have come to the conclusion that given the absolute inability to test, examine or prove in any physical way that there is something, we should be able to say that until tangible proof can be demonstrated it does not exist. I have never seen Australia but I know that there is a way to test if it exist, I have never seen a million dollars all at once, but I have seen lots and lots of dollars so can reasonably assume that a million exist. @guate6 memories are imprinted on our brain by chemical reaction, once it is no longer receiving oxygen via the flow of blood it ceases to function, that is a biological fact, you can pretend there is an after life, but simply put there is no such thing a as magic, so without magic where exactly would our memories be stored.

@robtay1963 Most of us did. Dan Barker is a perfect example - an evangelical preacher who one day "woke up and smelled the coffee." To me all the "where did the universe come from" and "why do we have morality" arguments are just a smokescreen for the real issue. Once you accept that god(s) is not real and religion is a myth, you have to accept the sad, cold fact of death. Many don't REALLY believe, but are happy to delude themselves because it gives them comfort in the face of inevitable truth.

For each egg and sperm to progress to a baby, it requires God's cooperartion. Hence the "miracle of life". There is a huge difference between God choosing to not bless this embryo into life vs. a human making that choice.

These are mutually exclusive ways of thinking. @Menla1 Exactly. One need not be religious or spiritual at all to see that abortion is a form of violence. At the very least a violation of alturism. I would think that an atheist would be more opposed to abortion than a believer. At least believers have the consolation that the childs soul is preserved and continues to exist. For non-believers there is no such comfort.

@DontBendOverForAllah It depends on the person. Where I live, all aborted or misscarried fetuses that have "human features" are cremated and scattered in a cemetary according to Swedish law. The hospital/clinic does all the arrangements.
