@bureci , appreciate the answer : ) agree with you about the origin . cos this music was produced long ago during Ottomans and at those times it might be composed by a Turk , Greek , Bulgarian , Macedonian , etc . living in the territory of Ottoman Empire . Whoever produced this song , just thanks a lot :) its quite nice - shooting :)
Turkish , Greek , Macedonian or whatever ! These nations lived together or very very close to each other for many years and their music resemble to each others . As a Turk , I enjoy listening to Greek songs esp . Dalaras , Mazanokis , Ploutarxos and others cos they sound interesting to me and Im sure , this song here and many other Turkish origin songs sound quite interesting to many people from other countries :)
We have a version of this turkish/greek/whatever song in Macedonia. It's called "Ој Девојче". So what..................It's wonderful, that's what's count!!!!
even if loreena compose a song about my ballz...greeks will again say tht this is greek not turkish and yea im sure about where my balls belong to....sigh
Stfu with origin arguements and enjoy the song plz..cose those arguements getting old and boring really..
My intention is not to raise an argument. I respect deeply Turkish culture as every other culture in the world. Especially since our countries have exchanged so much over the past millenia (I am Greek). But in order to respect and maintain tradition, we must not try to change facts or be one sided. Besides i think the reason that miss McKennitt chose to perform this song is that it carries influences from a wide range of civilaztions! Greetings Antonis
Scutari-Üsküdar - Σκούταρι is the ancient greek city called "Χρυσόπολις" wich is the one you know now as a part of Instanbul (the name by wich it was founded is Κωνσταντινούπολη not Istanbul by the way). There, many thousands of greek families used to live until they were driven away. Thats why this province up to this day has a greek name! (Uskudar or "Iskader") is another name for alexander the great wich founded Χρυσόπολις! So don't call me ignoramus just because you want to be right !
@TheZaxaza you are at the same way we dont mention the toponyms of Turkish or Greek cities. There can be found too many Greek names of Anatolian/Thracen cities of Turkey also in Greece (Turkish, Macedonian, Arnavitic) This is about the ethnic origin of song.Üsküdar was always been a Turkish city for the last 600 years !!!
This is not Ottoman music although it has been very popular throughout Τurkey and its neighboring countries. This is a very old traditional song written be Greek people who lived in Asia minor. As the song became popular, its lyrics were translated in other languages, as well as Turkish. While Jewish people immigrated, this song spread with them in the whole of the mediterranean. And that is probably the reason why miss Loreena named it after them.
@TheZaxaza get lost ignoramus maximus in that times Scutari-Üsküdar was full of Muslims (Turks). Greeks had never lived that part of istanbul ! So the Greekness of song a bit strange:)
bella Loreena McKennitt! la vidi nell'anno 1991 prima ancora che diventasse famosa, nel palazzo di musica di Barcellona.il biglietto all'epoca costo l'equivalente a 5 euro!
There must be a misunderstanding Loreena Mckennitt doesn't steal songs, if you've ever watched Nights from the Alhambra she makes an introduction at the beginning of her songs telling her audience from where she got the lyrics or the music. she's a person who respects other people's cultures and traditions that's what makes her a great artist...if only the world had more like her.
It is a melody from the old Sephardic Jewish song called Hija Mia sung in Judeo Spanish. It also reflects Sephardic melody in general and is related to other Middle Eastern music.
@lyoizisi You are right my friend I am Syrian and I Know that this music is a PURE TURKISH because we used to sing it in Arabic but we all know the origin is Turkish it seems that Loreena visit to Israel had affected her mind I was a long time fan of Loreena but now I am disappointed ...
Too true. Like the world we live in. It really is a shame the way we carry on with one and other over this thing or that. Immensely beautiful song. Why fight over it?
@DovidPatrick Many nations share it, but they all claim it as their own. It's the worst here in Balkans, everyone has their own version of song, and they get angry when someone says it's a common song. So sad. :(
This is Turkish/OTTOMAN music&song that name is Üsküdara Giderken. Its Our and she could specified it's name in her album. But she couldnt... Anyway (: I love Loreena Mckennitt...
This is a rearranged version of "Üsküdara giderken". You can argue it is stolen, which is in fact 99,9% true. But I prefer to give her a compliment for the nice background instrument rearrangement. Isn't it nice that Loreena liked this Ottoman / Turkish music so much that she made this version ? Also look for "Istiklal trio" on this site, these are Israeli's playing Ottoman music.
…Turkish …Greek …Serbian …Bosnian …Spanish …Jewish …can’t you see that the song gives you the answer? …we are not different …music travels through the centuries and makes us feel better …isn’t that a common way? …keep that in mind and enjoy your life!
@2112rushfan76 You're right, a part of it does sound like a faster version of Hatikva. I do believe that it has it's origins in Sephardism, brought to Kosovo. We have two versions of this song, one of them is called Ruse Kose - Shiny hair and there is another one 1910 recording...
It is most probably Jewish, originating in Turkey, spreading to Spain with sephardic Jews and to the Balkans with the Otoman empire. Everybody bickers about the origin of the song, and nobody seems fascinated with the fact that the melody survived, unchanged, for over a millennium.
@jimakos61 I agree with you:-) It is just because people were asking about this song, that's why I did comment. It is wrong to fight about it. Many people are releated to eachother if you look at the history. :-)))
@TheaterMozaik This is a very very old Serbian song. So old that we don't know who the original singer was but it is a song that every Serb knows. It is called Shiny Hair girl you have. And it talks about her black eyes, her white face and honeyed lips.
@sneighwena To you this is a Serbian song, to my friend this is a song from bosnia, to others this is a song from Balkan, to me this is a very old turkish song. It is because this song comes from the Ottoman's time..
Here is some links you can look and maybie read the comments. But many songs and musics (turkish) comes from the ottoman time. And for us it is very old turkish song:-)))
