thing is it really helps you relax to move your neck around and not clamp it on the violin. She's just taking it to the next level and trying to feel the rythm, nothing wrong with that. I'm in the no-shoulder rest team so i love her even more. Plus she's not asian, that's refreshing, eh? Eh?
@kitchenfiddle I think you might need to see her play when she was nine. There's a video on youtube (it's the wieniawski scherzo tarantella). Tell me what you think.
@sregnathan Yes she's CDN-born, yet people call her American. Similarly people say soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian's CDN or Armenian, yet she was born in Lebanon. I say Isabel B's Lebanese
i think she plays it really well you just have not watch her play it and just listen, as for watching her play it i dont know why she does all that stuff and if i were her and could play it just as well without looking like a retard i would try it that way but maybe she is so effected by the music that she has to do it that way

I think I finally figured out why Leila made such agonizing expressions in this video...she did not have a shoulder support on her violin!! It's very painful playing without it because it puts your neck in an awkward position. I've tried it myself and it's just too painful playing without it.
I'm a violinist myself, so I know what I'm talking about. I've tried playing my violin without the shoulder rest, but it's just to doggone painful without it. FYI, Hilary Hahn and Sarah Chang both play WITH shoulder rests and their violins resonate beautifully.
Some violinists play fine without shoulder rests, some don't. It's the violinist's choice to use it or not. If it hurts, she probably wouldn't have played without the shoulder rest. Isaac Stern is an example of the ones who play with the shoulder rest. And one more thing, before, people play without the shoulder rests, until recently that violinists started using them.
Just being a violinist doesn't mean you're an expert on playing without a shoulder rest :)
FYI Zino Francescatti played without a shoulder rest and his tone was heaven-storming despite the recording technology of his time. Some speculate that he had padding under his jacket, though I have doubts since in a lot of videos, there is a good bit of space between the shoulder of his jacket and the back of his violin.
I did not claim to be an expert on playing without a shoulder rest...I just said that FOR ME it's more comfortable playing WITH the shoulder rest. I've never heard of Francescatti...are there any videos of him on this website? Let me know, thanks.
In the search bar, type in "Francescatti Saint Saens" and you should be able to find his recording of the Saint Saens violin concerto #3. I'm a big fan of the 3rd movement. Francescatti's Zigeunerweisen is also excellent.
you are right that he used nothing. compare his violin that Accardo now has, which Accardo plays wonderfully, but it just does not sound as divine and pure in clarity as when zino had it. OriginalMoonbeam has videos devoted to Francescatti on her channel btw talking about his genius. A brilliant performer!
if a shoulder rest helps your playing and you are more comfortable by all means you should use one, it doesn't affect the violins sound enough one way or the other that it is going to matter. If people choose not to use them it won't hurt their necks since they adjust their playing position accordingly.Thibaud points out that we are all all individuals with individual bodies so I say whatever allows a person to play at their best capacity is good. What is right for one might not be for another.
You're thoughts are so primitive its insulting to any and every single violinist period. It is not painful to play without a shoulder rest child, you have but to readjust the positioning of your violin. Its an entirely different way of playing. (and that is NOT why hahn and chang have such brilliant sounds)
No doubt she's very gifted, but I wish she would colour the constant intensity with a little light and shade. She has an irritating and not very musical habit of approaching every note with no vibrato then sudden full-on vibrato. Her full volume is also over the top, making a really harsh sound with the bow hair colliding with the stick, which makes a grating noise. But I concede she's certainly individual ;)
Great performance. One of my favourite contemporary violinists. Her sound is very focused like Leonid Kogan. Her facial expressions are very passionate and shows they way she feels her music. Listen to the music instead of paying too much attention to her face ;) One of the greatest violinists today along with such as Hilary Hahn, Anne Sophie-mutter and Julia Fischer.
I have been back many times to enjoy this video, it's my favorite version of the Bruch--thanks so much for posting it. I think she is going to be remembered as one of the greats, her playing is divine.
I think it's a fabulous technique but at least in this movement, the sound isn't streamlined enough...it is like a jagged mountain range, with sudden peaks in the phrase popping up, that distract me. Additionally every bow change can be heard if one listens closely enough.
I adore her. The bow changes are like van gogh's brush strokes. I love her energy. I love her jagged mountain ranges. And yes, I too want to marry her!
Beautiful cocerto but is the warhorse to end all warhorses. I appreciate her trying to do something different with it even if the end result is a little odd in places. She plays with feeling for sure.
why not to look like that, you see many people who play classical all have there own expressions including me this tells me she is feeling the music and how the composer would like to play it.
Cant stand the face, its a shame cause its sounds great

Is there any way to edit out the weird faces she keeps making? Can you just photoshop in an image of Mr. Hanky or Mount Rushmore or something?

Silly facial expressions, histrionic slides. I do not believe her. Technically well played but superficial. That's how it gets across to me.

Why do you make a point of putting this ridiculous comment on every part?! It's not true. Sorry I'm getting annoyed but it's just not true!
