Fantastic piece of chamber music, by a master composer. This Rob Kapilow guy needs to calm down though. His commentary, though right on, is delivered so awkwardly; he's so twitchy. maybe he's nervous.
Anything that gets people to listen to music with an open ear rather than hear it as background music is alright in my book. Since music is almost always abstract something tangible for the public to grab onto is nice (even if it's made up drama.) Thumbs up.
how is it made up drama? music creates an individual experience for each listener, but this work was decidedly programmatic. chamber music was the last place absolute music existed until this piece. schoenberg used dehmel's text not only to transfigure musical motives (developing variation-continued from Brahms and Wagner), but also transfigures the realm of chamber music. read some of the critic's reactions to this music, you'll find the drama. especially considering S was so sensitive to it
You have good pionts. I was knee deep in Harry Partch when I made that comment, which made me a little militant about corporeal vs abstract music, but in the end, yes, this piece is very programmatic. I think Kapilow is a little over the top with it, as a lot of conductors/ commentators for these types of shows tend to be. Thank you for keeping my feet on the ground.
Myrakal:Even English is not my maternal language ,I prefer to repeat (with some variations) in your language the same I wrote to your friend from Italy: " In all the first world there are the same kind of representations as a docent tool to teach the postmodern music, some people do not understand easily. Not the tool, the introduction, the music are "shit" . We must be aware the use of inadequate and vulgarly language are not the best to post and convince.
Myrakal: I prefer to refer to the music (exquisite and revolutionary) ,because is a historical link of innovations which starting point at Beethoven , then Mahler, Schoenberg, Henze and now a numerous composers dealing with the "language" of music for the next generations....
I prefer let the point of the commentary of a person at side. At my age (71 and counting...) I prefer to engage in more positive things and hope my mind will be "open" for it. I welcome your commentaries.
One of my favorite pieces by Schoenberg. Interesting lecture.

Well, I think, it's just his way of speaking... A bit strange, I agree, but if one detaches seeds from weeds, IMHO, the info he gives is very useful.

totally, but he is extremely distracting. probably works better as a radio broadcast. viola sounds fantastic.
